So i finally got one.
After a bit of hunting locally, looking into the options of importing and converting i got hold of an 83 Heritage.
There were only 3 available for sale locally, (albeit all over 500km away)
1 was a V6 and had a fair bit of rust, another a V8 but needed a bit of work to tidy it up.
and this one, which was well out of my price range... how ever fortune was in my favour as it ended up going to auction and became mine for about $6500 AUD.
with a reported 27,000 miles and 95% of the electrics working, its pretty good :)
anyway, enough of the story, here are the photos of it as i picked it up.

The RHD is totally freaky! Very clean car. Congrats on finding it!
Awesome. Didn't even know there was a RHD version of these cars. I wonder if there ever was a RHD 85-88 version?
Oh, and beautiful 'Bird, too. Looks good all whited up and tinted out...
I don't think there are any RHD Versions, this one was a Personal Import to Australia, would have been converted after it arrived.
I've never seen a later model one over here, but in saying that, i've only seen 3 of the 83-85 ones.
I want to respray it black, but its hard to bring myself to do it since the white paint is in such good condition.
will do some other things first, like lower and get rid of those horrible wheels
That is too cool for words. I learned something new today.
Edit: My mistake. I was used to seeing the '85-'87 console plates, so that one looked odd to me.
Whats normally on the horn pad?
I'm deff going to have to do some hunting to find out the changes/differences.
i was amused at the Battery being on the opposite side, which is where it is on our locally built 5.0 cars (falcon's etc).
Congrats, it looks like a really clean car.
The reversed console plate may have been made or modified by the conversion company.
What's reversed on the console plate? It looks normal to me. The shifter is obviously out of an early fox mustang though.
That is so cool!!!
Horn pad is wood grain with the bird in the center. I have a 83 Heritage here if you want to see a pic I can snap one, I also have all the Ford manuals if you are nedding som info I can try to scan it and email it to you.
i'd LOVE to get some scans of the Manuals if possible.
and yeah some interior photos of yours would be good, i'd like to get the interior of this neatened up as much as possible
I had no idea where everything was when i picked it up.
trying to workout how to move the seats and turn various things on.
saying that, it did the 800km drive home without a fuss :D
Very cool, the right hand drive looks so...disorientating. The battery is in the same spot as the left hand drive cars, the battery didn't move until SEFI was available in 86 (?) What are your plans for the drivetrain?
aah interesting, i must have been looking at others then.
a HO conversion is on the cards, likely using a local Falcon 5.0 motor as the donor.
my soon to be retired 1988 EA Falcon wagon has a 5.0 HO motor with Explorer manifold and a locally produced (and thus easier to find parts) Electronic 4 Speed auto.
Will just need to sort out the EEC wiring and what tail shaft fits!
probably this motor
(http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/5029/img0369p.jpg)
Very nice; if I were in Australia, I'd be tempted to throw in a 351 Cleveland...
2 words:
Bitchin' score!
Nice looking car. It sits a little high for me and the wheels aren't to my tastes, but it looks really clean otherwise.
Being an '83, that 5.0 will have the EEC 3 engine management, which can be kind of tedious to deal with. You're talking about an engine swap, so that should take care of that problem.
That's a clean bird!

Here are a couple steering wheel center pics so you can see. Right now there is a NOS center on ebay for a 80-82 which is the same shape but a different woodgrain pattern. If there are other things you want to see let me know and I can take some more pics. On a different note, do your carriage lights still work?
Hmm, might have to try find one of those steering wheel centres, gotta find someone who will send overseas!
What are Carriage Lights?
He is talking about the electroluminescent coach lamp emblems on the C pillar. These:
Oh..
I don't beleive they do.
Not sure if they'd legally be allowed to over here.
As it is i need to make some modifications just to get the car to comply with out regulations.
On the list so far:
Add Child Restraint to Parcel Shelf
Add Reverse Lights, Ensure Indicators Flash Orange
Fix Park Brake
Fix Front Seat to ensure the seat back locks in position (any ideas on this?)
Possibly change seat belts
Your reverse lights are in the center of the taillights, behind the "Bird". Talk to Trinom in the thread below about yellow signals, he's doing some kind of mod for that.
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?24848-My-86-TurboCoupe&p=354314#post354314
As far as the seat goes, I would consider just drilling a small hole through the tilt mechanism and sliding a pin of some thickness through it. Instant lock!
I have sent things to Australia and other parts of the world before, if you buy something over here and they wont ship to you ship it to me and I will ship it to you
Does the car need reverse lights to be legal? If not you could put some 1156NA bulbs into the backup light sockets and wire 'em into the front turn signals. then wire the existing stop/turn lights directly to the brake light switch (bypassing the turn signal switch) so they function as brake-only...
Hmm... thats what i thought about the reverse lights, i tested it last night and the clear section behind the bird is acting as the indicators, not the reverse lights.
no lights at all when reverse is engaged.
where are the indicators normally positioned?
the pin lock for the seats might just work actually.
Thanks for the offer, i'll keep that in mind.
Looks like the previous owner already did my suggestion. The stock indicators are combined with the brake lights (if you step on the brake while an indicator is on, the brake light will come on on one side and the indicator will flash on the other).
Very cool! Congrats!
Well in that case, I would just makes sure there are Yellow bulbs where the reverse lights SHOULD be, and run a wire tap through the trunk floor and down under the bumper with some clear aftermarket fog lights poking out. Or you can try and get Trinom to set you up with his LED setup.
By the way, could I get the tire size you are currently running and a height measurement from the ground up to the approx. Center of the wheelwell fender arch front and rear?(One side is fine)
Thunder Chicken's advice is good. If the previous owner left the original turn signal wires hooked up to the two bulbs on either side of the reverse bulb, you could just cut them at the bulb, leaving only the brake light wire.
Yeh, i'll pull the tail lights out and take a look at whats been done to change things over.
i'll need to get measurements for the height, but the tyres are 225/50/17's
got out on the weekend and pulled the pin striping off.
much prefer it :D

nice bird..... Is it me, or does it look like the side moulding is off an 87-88..... just chopped to fit, and flipped over......
If you ever get a chance to put it on a lift I'd love to see pics of the steering setup. I'd imagine it must use some rack designed for an Aussie Ford that happens to bolt onto the Fox chassis, but it'd be neat to see...
No. Those are the "fancy" wide side moldings for the 83-84 TBirds. Thats how they were on my car. I didn't have any good ones for the doors (the old ones didn't come off nice), so just left them off when the car was painted. I did look odd, as they didn't match the mouldings in front of, and behind, the wheel wells.
I'm actually keen to take a look myself, sooner or later the rack will give it up :P
like to know what its from!
when i get it in the air i'll take a look
hmm... i hadn't noticed that.
they do look upside down when compared to the front/rear ones.
either way, i'm leaning towards removing the side ones completely.
looks a lot cleaner without them.
LOL, they certainly are...... "Fancy"
Finally got around to get a Roadworthy check done today, got a list of things i need to do to get it on the road.
The throttle seems to stick a bit, mainly when cold, but its an issue, not too familiar with the CFI setup on these, so i'll have to pull the filter off and have a look.
headlight fell off lol.
need to install a light under the t-bar so you can see the selector at night (car was converted from column shift)
Replace the RIght Hand Tail Light (current one is cracked) - still trying to get this over here, not fun :(
Replace windscreen - not looking forward to the quotes for this, would be a rareity over here, waiting on a call back.
look at the knuckles in the steering/intermediate shaft, just some play. - probably need to work out what car it came from in the first place with the RHD conversion.
replace all the flexible Brake hoses, apparently they're all looking very sorry for themselves, almost to the point of letting go.
thats about it.
all in all its not too bad a list for an almost 30 year old car.
if i can get a tail light and windscreen, the rest should be easy :D
then i can start modifying it :D
Yep, there's always something. Did you get the rear indicator lights all sorted? And are you still trying to find the tail light there, or get someone to ship it?
I actually just tried to go without doing anything to the indicators/reverse lights, just to see if they picked on it.
they didnt mention it so i'm happy about that.
i've had someone offer to send some taillights, but progress has been slow, and postage estimates crazy.
so still considering all options.
also scared of what this windshield is going to cost me :/
Wow. That is very cool. I'm so glad that car is part of the community.
Beautiful car! I actually like the wheels on it for some reason. The white is very good looking on that car.
Good news, Tail light ordered. :P
Total roll reversal. I would LOVE to have an Australian Ford over here. Car looks great, but every time I look at the interior shots it throws me off lol. Good luck with it. There are plenty of good people around here that will help you get what you need.
not much has changed yet, but took it out to a show on the w/e, lots of attention with no one knowing wtf it is.
researching how i can get away with a 5 lug conversion, trying to see if any local parts might assist.
Do you have Rangers there?
Pretty sure we've only had them for the last 5 years or so.
before that we had the 'Fort Courier'
although i think they're all based off a Mazda.
we have our falcon based utes which were always the more popular option
If you can find length info on those axles, then cross reference them with the info over on CoolCats.net for 5 lug swaps, i bet you can find out what parts will work.
Yeah, I've been meaning to do some measurements on the local Falcon Axles.
my Falcon's all have 28 spline axles, and are 5 lug.
so theres potential there.
then just sorting out the front end.
Been a productive few weeks.
The Thunderbird is now Regsitered on a 'Club Permit' which entitles it to limited use (90 days a year) at a much reduced cost to normal registration.
and with that i took it out to 2 events on the weekend.
First up was a Car Club that i'm heavily involved with (I run it) for Modified Falcons.
Our annual Cruise for Charity, with approximately 270 cars in attendance.
I put the Thunderbird on display whilst my main falcon is off the road.
99% of people had no idea what it was, so there was a bit of interest.

On the sunday, another Show n Shine was on, so i loaded up the family into the Tbird and took it for a drive.
A good mixture of cars were in attendance, with a lot of american muscle.
One other Fox based car (A Mustang) but again, hardly anyone knew what the Bird was, so it sparked quite a few looks.

My 10" Ranger Rotors arrived yesterday, pulled out a centre for the wheels that will be fitted to ensure the centre hub would clear.
as you can see, all good :D
hopefully the offset is all good once i assemble the wheels!
Pulled the axles and drums off on sunday, will be taking them down to the diff place to get them redrilled to 5x114.3
(http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/2505/imag0565n.jpg)
also swapped the rotors over the ranger set i got, so i've got 5 stud on the front.
just need to get hold of some slightly larger dust caps, and some wheels to suit, not quite sure if the AJR's (above) are going to work yet, due to the offset and width.
Finally got my axles back and installed.
so its now 5 stud :D
its also a bit lower.
now to find me some wheels
(http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/6099/imag0636g.jpg)
may potentially use these for a while, they're 17x7.5" off a Ford Territory (basically our version of the Explorer)
If you can find someone local(at least in your own country) that builds 3pc wheels, you can build those AJRs to any width and offset your heart desires.
I easily found MANY places in Europe that would build lips and barrels for my Desmond wheels, but shipping was a deal breaker. Finally found a couple places that would build them in the states here and settled on a guy in Florida. Amazing results and decent price!

Those AJR's look alot like the Kinesis SuperCup wheels. Are those centers cast or forged?
Not sure if they are cast or forged, they were only on the market for a few years before they were discontinued, they were made in a few different designs and sizes (all 3 piece wheels)
I've got a fair collection of inners/outers/centres for them, in 17" and 18".
Which is one of the reasons i've got a set that *should* fit :P
+20 offset is a pretty uncommon fitment over here, but +5 and +35 are very common, i've got AJR's in both offsets so by mix and matching parts i'm hoping to get something right in the middle.
main issue being that they're 9" wide.
on the rear this isnt an issue.
on the front, the rim is within 5mm from the strut, and i don't have a tyre on it yet so i've got no idea what clearance to the guard is like.
I might look at getting some Mustang Lower arms to bring the wheels in a little bit if i need some more clearance.
Mustang arms won't help you anyway. You already have fox mustang length arms in that year car. 87/88's had the longer arms, and from experience know that if you put a shorter arm in, you will have even less clearance to the strut. My 17x9's on my burgundy car were less than a 1/4" from the strut in the front, and never had rub issues even with 295/35/17's up there, but it did require a 1/4" spacer for those tires too. Was fine on 275's.
Thanks for the tip.
Guess i can s that idea :P
I won't have very wide tyres on the front, so assuming they clear the guard, it should be fine.
took it out last night, loads of looks/comments, with people calling it all sorts of incorrect things :P
good times lol
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/795/imag0680v.jpg)
Picked up a set of Bonspeed Royals tonight, not 100% sure if they will fit yet, i think they are 8" wide, and should be somewhere between 0 and +6 offset, as they came off a Falcon.
will test fit them tomorrow and find out!

Will swap the tyres over to 225's and get the guards lipped.
not sure i have many options to bring the wheels in closer being an 83?
car sitting on an awkward angle, but i like it :D
(http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/543617_10150879657237886_1382126954_n.jpg)
I am not saying fordguy454 is wrong, but I would measure your frt control arms. My 85 turbo coupe has the 14" length frt control arms. Measure from the center point of the frt and rear mounting bolts to the center of the ball joint. It can't hurt to check.
Those wheels look sweet on it! Actually, I learned something about the front suspensions in these cars within the past week or so. If you manage to find an 87/88 K-member, and use your current control arms, you will end up with the suspension setup I have and gain 3/4" of room on either side.
mmm... don't like my chances of finding one of those locally.
wonder how bad shipping would be...
would probably also need to check if any modifications were done to the existing one with the RHD conversion with regards to the steering rack used.
still nice to know there are options!
got narrower tyres, started rolling the guards.
only to realise my rear brake line (flex line between the body and diff) was cracked near the mount point.
so i've had to pull that off again to get a replacement.
I think the exhaust must have hit it where it goes over the diff.
I like the wheels!

Changing the trim to black makes it a lot better. For the bags did you use OEM bags from lincoln mark Vii or aftermarket stuff?
Aftermarket stuff.
There are no Lincoln's over here, so it would have been difficult to source parts.

Get the front down a bit and perfect !!!
Yeah i've ordered some MM Camber plates, when i install those i'll see if i can get the front lower.
As above is bottoming out the shocks.
if that doesn't work, i'll see if i can find some fox mustang struts.
Forgot to update
Installed the MM Camber plates, which helped bring the front down.
Unfortunately overestimated hood clearance, so have a bit of a dint in it from the strut :/

Someone stole yer engine!!!!!
Seriously, it's not fair to tease like that without at least a LITTLE details as to what's coming.
In Aus, our ~1998/1999 Ford Falcon's had a Explorer Spec 5.0 available.
so Roller Block
GT40P's
Cranecam 444225
crane roller rockers
crow valve springs
I've got a Powerdyne Supercharger to suit the engine itself, but i think the Bracket setup will have it sitting too wide, so it may or may not be used.
either way, should pretty much double the power it had with the original motor :)
wow so weird seeing the firewall all backwards like that. :P I'm being serious! Also ya gotta keep the stock hood look. Any chance to get a turbo coupe hood for cheap where you're at?
Nah not a chance.
I'd be surprised if there was even a Turbo Coupe in Australia.
slowly but surely.
Still need to work out the headers on the Drivers side.
as expected, the shorties interfere with the steering shaft.
Started cutting up some other headers i had laying around, but i need to get a new starter to check clearance.
Not much more to show yet.
Although its now running after finding 2 dud injectors.
engine bay is more Aussie Falcon then thunderbird now, which should make life easier for replacement parts.
Needs tidyup and to install the TV Cable before its drivable.
Met the deadline, and got the car back on the road intime for Summernats :D
1400km round trip, only some minor issues.
Loads of attention for the car, no one knew what it was.

Came accross a SN95 sitting in a wrecking yard yesterday.
a *very* rare occurance!
took the oportunity to grab the spindles/calipers/rotors on the front, and the complete rear axle.
will need to source the random bits and pieces required to fit them, but it'll be nice to have some bigger brakes & stronger rear end!
Good deal :burnout:
