I know it doesnt look like much now  , but it is actually pretty darn clean underneath as far as I can tell.  But what do you expect for $200

heres the parts car.  Going to be using alot of it and probably parting the rest.  Think the front end will be going on the car getting built.  And I drove it around this afternoon.  Not only was the timing belt broken, the plugs were awful, and the fuel tank has a major leak dumping all the fuel out.  It leaves a trail  4 hrs and $15 and I can drive it around which I think is quite funny

I am not sure exactly what I'm going to do, but I think I may just rewire the whole car.  I can probably loose at least 50# that way.  Get rid of everything I can behind the dash and still meet scca rules.

Well, I've gotten off my ass and started working on this.  Spent quite a while sing all the sound deadener off the floor, all 38# of it.  The carpet that was in there was 40# in itself.  Waiting on coilover parts and c/c plates for the front.  messed up a new balljoint trying to put it in tonight so I'm a bit pissed about that.  Also realized I need a couple new doors because the bottoms are rotted out and not attatched to the skin anymore.  Also got the new wheels I'm going to widen(thanks for finding those tony!)

Everywhere there is gray, there was sound deadener :jawdrop:

roof inside - not much sound deadener up there

Front suspension - whats left of it, lol.

About where they will end up when I widen them two more inches to 18x12

front spring rate?
are you retiring the 88?
what are you planning that will force you into CP?
the wheels look to be one piece? you gonna have weldcraft widen them?
CP rules will allow geometry changes, are you gonna redrill that Kmember for better LCA locations?
thru floor SFCs???
Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on September 04, 2010, 09:54:04 PM
Front springs are 7" 750's.  Dad had them laying around so I thought I'd try em.  Not that hard to change.

The 88 will not be retired, since it will be called into duty when I break this one, lol.

Its going in cp because I just can't compete against the soon to be SM national champion Dave sutton.  I just know he's gonna do it.  His evo 10 is  FAST, but he's still an douche.

The interior will be entirely stripped out.  Removing any sound deadener throws you out of SM and truthfully CP looks easier.

The wheels are one piece, but I was going to widen them myself.

I thought I read in the rules that you couldnt go to an aftermarket kmember, but there must be ways around it since the 11 time national champion has a full tube front frame on a 65 mustang so I havent figured that out.  Currently in region, I am already seconds ahead of fully built cp mustangs on slicks.

I havent fully decided what I'm doing for SFC's.  I just have weld on ones on the 88, and I could lift a front tire with it and seemed pretty stiff actually.  Seriously trying to keep weight down on this car.  Already sed 38# of deadener off the floor, carpet was 40#, didnt weigh the dash, but thats gonna stay out, and I have to see what else I can cut out of the inside.  Shooting for featherweight(2800 min with the weight penalty on the wheels)

I just love this kind of stuff...this is an awesome project.  Keep us updated!

Holy jeez that parts car was rusted beyond belief!!  Those front frame rails/shock towers were SCARY.

modified stock k-member fits here:
Quote from: 17.8.B.2
Suspension pick up points on the chassis or structure may be re-
located. If such points are relocated, there shall be a metal panel,
covering, or bulkhead separating the driver from the suspension
components.
and here:
Quote from: 17.2.C
The chassis, frame, or subframe may be notched or cut and brackets
may be added for the purpose of attaching alternate suspension or
drivetrain components, except that the firewall may not be modifi ed
for engine block or cylinder head clearance. Holes may be cut to
provide clearance for authorized suspension and drivetrain compo-
nents, through their entire range of travel. Additional structure may
be added in order to attach allowed components to the chassis.
tubular stuff fits here:
Quote from: 17.2.D
Replacement of any chassis component (e.g. subframe) in its en-
tirety by one of alternate construction, unless specifi cally permitted,
shall result in the vehicle being “in excess” of these rules and weight
penalties and/or competitive adjustments may apply.

since you have it mocked up with the stock k-member i didnt figure you were planning on tubular, but there are modifications that can be done to the stocker that will help too.

i feel your pain on being competitive in SM, not that my car is even technically class "legal." my issue is i dont want my car to be a CP car(i like my interior and fenders, thank you), and there isnt anyone runnin CP here anyhow.

I'm especially lacking because I really have done VERY little to the suspension on my other bird.  Shocks/struts, bushings, boxed control arms, no rear swaybar, bigger front swaybar, and stock springs.  I'm sure that I've gotten everything I can out of that combination and the need to drop weight is the biggest factor of all I believe.  I am currently leading sm points, but will probably loose out to a camaro that has coilovers and bigger swaybars and 315's all the way around.  I can't get bigger than 295's on the front of mine even with serious fender rolling.

That dash is actually cracking up pretty bad(still solid, but broke where I had to take stuff out), but I will probably start parting that parts car out soon!

I think they were bored and rattle canned it.  Were about 15 black paint cans in the trunk, empty, along with a set of brake rotors that were worn down to the vents.  Car had a broken timing belt, so that tells you how much care it got.

Rattle can jobs are great.  Once my friends and I blacked out a Cutlass Sierra he picked up for $100.

finally getting time to work on this thing lately  Got the entire underside, engine bay and lower bodyline/quarter fenders sandblasted in preparation for welding everything up (torque boxes and such) and fender widening.  Have to send off some pix of my wheels to weldcraft since I think I will leave that to the pros depending on price, lol.  On to some pics

I'm glad I'm finally done welding the torque boxes and undercoating  I dont remember going through as much trouble welding up my turbocoupe before.  This car must have really gotten an undercoating treatment because everywhere I welded was pretty clean, but as soon as it got hot, undercoating started coming out from underneath

I think I'm going to end up putting my 86 Tbird a-arms on to bring the tire in another inch from where its at now.  Only bad thing is weldcraft contacted me and pretty much told me they couldn't widen my wheels, so I guess I will end up widening them myself anyway

doesnt have any downpipe on it yet.  I haven't done ANYTHING to that engine yet.  There is still room above the torque arm crossmember to be able to get a 3" pipe though there though.

That is what I was wondering. Difficult to tell from the pics if there is enough room above the xmember for any piping

they are from maximum motorsports for SN95 mustang.  Bilstien sport valved shocks in the rear and eventually get sport front struts too.  current ones are standard HD bilstiens.

This is a SICK build!  I really like how you are building your own suspension mods.  I curious as to the front torque arm connection.  I thought the front connection needed to allow for axle rotation up or down from side to side?  I guess you are not expecting any body lean in the corners, huh?

Keep up the great work.

That's pretty. I'm a little concerned about how it mounts to the crossmember. Is it going to bind? Dont most torque arms mount with a heim joint. But its freaking beautiful fab work.

The MM arm is attached with a bolt in single shear.  I didnt like that, and I didn't like the way the griggs arm attached either.  So, I tried something different.  It works for leaf springs, so why is this any different?  Its got the two bushings so that each one only has to take up half the movement.

This is an install I found of the MM torque arm that clearly shows the bolt in single shear

knew this project was going too good.  Had some setbacks tonite.  I welded two of the three bars with inserts in them.  Tig'd them and turned out great, only I can only get one of the 4 rod ends back in, and I managed to get another STUCK in the insert and CAN't get the  thin back out :suicide:
The other setback is the set of caliper brackets I bought that I thought were for 03-04 cobra size rear brakes except for a straight axle.  Not even close to fitting

^^This,

and what is your front bumper made of?? Mine is fiberglass and I dont remember it weighing anywhere near 25lbs before I started cuttin on it. I think it was like 14lbs and I lost 1 or 1.5lbs with the holes, and left off the nose portion for another 2.

I seriously considered ditching the whole setup and building sumthin from aluminum to replace the bumper and the absorbers. I decided against it since I still drive the car on the street. If this is gonna be a track only car, you might wanna weigh one of the absorbers, IIRC they are quite heavy.
Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on February 06, 2011, 01:17:58 PM
I'm using an 86 front end on this car which is why the bumper is steel.  Hadn't really considered taking off the absorbers.  I am hoping to occasionally drive it on the street
I did the shock tower reinforcements from advise, but all the setups I could find were in cars with cages(mustang) and they all tied into the cages.  I'm hoping this will work almost as good.
I think I got 4# off the trunk lid.  Didn't wheigh what I got off the hood, but probably 6-8#.  Definately weakened it up a bit

Sounds like you got the hydroboost MC, which is to say there is no easy answer.  You'll probably need to try a few MCs to see what you like.  For all factory choices, bore sizes range from 7/8" - 17/16", IIRC.

After a couple of tries, I settled on a Raybestos MC390125 (Wagner F129290).  Keep in mind that I removed the factory booster in antition of needing the room so am running this in a manual setup.  After some intake mock-ups, it looks like I'll have the room to use a booster, so I may or may not keep that MC once I see how the booster and MC play together.

I am runnin a 15/16" 95 cobra master. I like the pedal feel, but many guys prefer a 1" bore. The standard V6/GT master is 1 1/16" and was too firm for my liking at all.

Getting down to crunch time - 2 months untill needed completion(including tuning time  )
Time to get the final rust repair done - DOORS
time so far 2.5hrs and almost have 1 door done

BTW: do I need to grow a mullet since all the repair metal came from a camaro door??
and I ordered a 86 tbird booster and 1"bore master from rock auto today.  Best price I could find.

Yeah, can't believe how expensive those boosters are. I need one from a 93 GT, it's ~ $120!  I went with an 80's crown vic master with the big bore and it definitely increased pedal stiffness.

P.S. Don't talk to me about setbacks, I just had my 5-Speed installed with the wrong flywheel! *Sigh* Should be fixed by this weekend, in time for a shakedown before heading to Vegas.

yeah, not only did I get the wrong master, I got the wrong booster too.  Even with the right booster and right master, I'm going to be lucky to get it to fit with my rotated intake I think.  It'll be close for sure!

Got the first door done today and initial test fit is good.  we'll see once I put the fender back on.

I do have a question for everybody though.  Would you guys look at me weird if I put bride seats in it?  specifically these or their black counterpart  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-BRIDE-VIOS-Black-Gradation-RACING-SEATS-Silver-Backs-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c16dd478dQQitemZ120642684813QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

So far, these look the most comfortable of all the seats I've looked at, and they are the right price, but not so sure about them having the bride name in a american car.  I guess it really doesnt matter if they work good.

You might want to consider a set of mil circular connectors.  I deal with them at work all the time.  Very rugged and vibration resistant (we use them in A-10s).  Plus they look awesome.  If you decide to go that route let me know and i can help you pick out a nice clamp cable end and matching bulkhead.

Search d38999 in Google to see what I'm talking about.

Theres a guy on my local forum that says he can get some connectors out of an f-18 and ship them to me(he's stationed in arizona or someplace out there).  They are probably better suited and can handle more amps than the connectors I got.

Heh, I just got done painting most of my car with black epoxy primer, and it laid out fairly well, just needs bodywork! A 1/2 gallon would paint the whole car.

What kind of prep/paint did you use on the suspension/misc parts? Looks like it's coming along well!

Car has 4 coats of clear on it, so hopefully when I do finally get around to buffing it(probably in a couple months because this clear does better when fully hard) I can buff out all the dirt without breaking through.  I always have problems with dirt in this booth

BTW:  This blue definately didnt photograph anywhere near the right color.  It should be much darker and more purple.  Maybe the lights in this booth are messing with the camera since they are mercury vapor lights.

Dont know the paint code right off hand.  It was a color we had matched to a truck we built at work.

suspension is almost all together.  I did change my mind on some things on the engine though.  I'm just going to go ahead and use the E6 manifold instead of the ATR header.  I don't have time to keep screwing with that ATR.

What turbo are you running?

That combo screams for a T3/T04E .50 stage 3 or a Holset HX35!

I really am a fan of a fairly stock build with a little cam and those turbo's. Of course autocross might work better with less punch at boost onset from a smaller compressor wheel.
Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on March 27, 2011, 08:03:48 PM
at this point its a stock .48 T3.  It might get a holset next winter, but at this point there just isnt enough done to the head to support the holset.  I thought about a ebay turbo with a rebuild right off the bat, but thats something that can happen later also.  I should be able to get plenty of boost right off the bat to get out of corners where my other car always struggled.  I havent been able to make heads or tails out of compressor maps so that makes figuring out turbos a little difficult.

You might be surprised how well that combo will do without doing any more to it. I just put valve springs and a Stinger header and got 288 HP and 322 TQ with engine management and a Porsche intercooler on pump gas.

Your turbo will work great for autocross. Mine was to laggy for that. Good at the drags, though!

Just be sure to get at least a stage 2 turbine wheel and not a stocker, or it will be a slug. I found out recently that genuine high quality turbine wheels and housings are outrageously expensive right now.

I had picked up a rebuildable .57 T3/T4 for next to nothing thinkiing I'd slap on a new turbine side and get a cheap hybrid. To get the wheel and housing is like $575.00. Ouch. Last ones I bought were $200.00.

Don't mind the crushed velvet  Its the only thing I could find that would look decent and stretch far enough to be able to cover the dash without wrinkling.  Dash was red and decently cracked so it was easier to cover it than try to paint it, or buy a dash cap which I didnt feel like doing.
I got a start on the mounts for the radio and the rest of the gauges where the radio and climate control stuff was.  The 4 openings will be - top is radio, both middle ones are gauges, and the bottom is cig lighter and fan and window switches.

Yeah, that was a major PITA.  Getting it stretched over that with glue on the dash and the fabric, it kept sticking to itself and in the wrong places on the dash.  Hopefully it stays on there a while.  Its already started lifting in a few places.  If it wont stick back down, I'll have to take a syringe and put some more glue behind it and get it back down.

Well got my first test with the electrical system.  Most of the stuff works, but I did get the ignition wire on the wrong wire off the ignition switch.  Took me a while to figure that one out, and the windshield wipers dont work(dont know if theres some module that has to run through or what to do intermittent and stuff-gonna check on that tomorrow), and the headlights are doing wierd stuff.  Low beams are crossing into the high beams.  Tried cleaning the grounds but didnt help.

IT RUNS, but still needs another wire to the coil to give it 12V while cranking.  Ended up hotwiring it to the alt to see if thats all it needed.  Sadly though, this thing already starts better than my Burgundy car  but only with the spout out.  As soon as I put the spout in, it died.  Gonna take me a while to get it figured out since this MS2 is somewhat different than my MS1

Needs more wheel spacers then.  Already have 1/2" spacers on the front.  One side sort of clears but the other side didnt.  I'll see If I can get a set thats premade tonight.  Probably another 1/4" will do.  Pass side has a bunch more camber than the drivers so I can mess with the camber bolts some too to get clearance.

what does your front LCA geometry look like being that low(since I dont remember you redrilling the kmember)? I forget how much spring you are running too....

edit
went back and checked. 750lb coilovers.....geometry might not matter too much if the front arms arent moving :hick:

Post by: fordguy545 on April 22, 2011, 07:29:47 PM
I think they are 650's, but at the height it is now, the arms are pretty well level.  I did try bouncing the front end some, and it actually seemed to move more than my burgundy one does, but I didn't check tire pressure either.  They are almost gauranteed to be under pressure because when they mount them, they only put like 30 pounds in them.  The car may actually settle some more once it moves.  I didnt roll it back and forth or anything.

Beautiful car you've got going on. I look forward to seeing some video from the autox course sometime. :) I love the wheels but I am wondering why you went with 18s instead of some lighter 17s if you were going for a light setup (the gutted interior, etc).
Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on April 23, 2011, 06:27:00 PM
They are maybe a pound heavier than the 17s on my other car.  They will also react faster with a shorter sidewall, and mainly I just loved the wheels, lol.  CCW classics are still 22pounds or something being 17's and cost $2600 a set.  These are 18x10's that are 23 or 24# and cost $600,but the difference in weight gets lost from the tire being lower profile also so it kinda counteracts itself too.

Time for an update!  The car runs and drives, but is going to need some time tuning for sure!!  Drove it around and probably put about 8 miles or so on it.  Actually rides pretty decent even with the high spring rates.  Ended up taking it over to luckey farmers to get it weighed and weighs alot less than I expected it would.  2740# is what it weighs with 2-3 gallons of fuel in it.  I was a little stunned when I saw the number :shiznitbricks: .  You wouldnt believe the looks I got driving it around either!

Impressive all around. The 4eye front end is quite a mindshag, and the black paint hides the moulding issue well enough.

Have fun with your next project!

thanks guys.  I drove it to toledo last night(30miles or so away), and it actually doesn't ride bad for how stiff the springs are.  The tune is soso so far, and my ebay wastegate actuator is not a good match(18psi creeping to 25psi is as low as itll get), but its good enough for the first trial race tomorrow.  Definately doesnt pull hard at all, and I thought being 700# lighter than my other car, it would equal out a decent amount but it doesnt.  Doesnt even feel like a 14 sec car.  I really doesnt want to go past 5000rpm but then again I'm running a car without a ported head combined with a .48 t3 so I really shouldn't have expected that much I guess.  Does drive decent just around town though.

Coilovers work wonders for the ride quality.

Where did you end up for ride height, ground to top of wheel arch?

Thanks guys.  I just wish the car had run better.  Its hard to judge how a cars going to behave with full power when its only making about 90hp, lol.  I will say that yes it is very different from the red bird.  First turn I put it in, it definately did not roll at all!  I have to figure out just how to drive this car since I had been using the body roll to my advantage before!

That was the problem.  It actually broke the pin off the turbo elbow lever, so I modified a IHI actuator and put it on since its pin was on the actuator rod.

well, its not running very good right now because I updated the firmware in the megasquirt so I could use tunerstudio and spent all afternoon trying to get it to run again.  When I finally did get it running, then I couldnt retune it because I didnt have my registration info for tunerstudio for VELive.  I will go back tonight to try driving it around to tune itself, IF it would quit raining.  Slicks FTL in rain

Post by: fordguy545 on May 15, 2011, 07:51:51 PM
ok well the megasquirt has been fighting me since I updated that firmware, and finally messed around with the megasquirt enough times, I broke a pin off the processor:(  After that happened I had enough and robbed the bamafuel(MS1) out of my red car, and got it running on that this week, but the timing wasnt holding.  It would retard almost 40* on a free rev.  This had me scratching my head all last week, and finally dad helped me figure it out.  I had power on the start wire for the spout and couldnt figure out why.  I knew I had put a diode on that wire.  I hadn't thought about another wire backfeeding it.  Turns out I had the coil hot wire coming off the same terminal on the starter solenoid(since power to the coil is lost when the key is turned to start).  I ran that wire without even thinking about it messing with other stuff.  1 diode and it holds timing perfectly, but the ms1 won't control the timing at all.  If I set the program to ford tfi ignition, it wont even run, so I have all the ignition options turned off and am currently running it at 25* locked timing.
That must be working since I ran at an autox at toledo express airport and held FTD for 2 heats!  This car is pretty well balanced, but my rear swaybar is too stiff because its lifting the inside rear.  I only had a light mark where the front tire hit the fender so its setup relatively good already.  I will probably weld extensions on the swaybar and figure out how to attatch it farther forward, or find a smaller bar.

Went to a detroit scca event on monday at the Pontiac Silverdome.  I was the only car in class and they made me run first heat.  The lot was terrible(gravel, breaking up asphalt, glass in places-most of that got swept up though, 1.5' tall weeds) and my new strut setup made it even worse(repaired bent spindle mounting tabs on bilstiens and reinforced).  The repaired struts actually made the car want to turn in and as soon as I even thought about turning the wheel, the back of the car was sliding, so I spent most of all of my runs trying to keep it behind me.  The rear tires are done, so I'm upgrading to the next size - 315/30/18.  There was a guy there with a turbo sky running 295/30/18 tires on 8" wide wheels, so thats a 2" narrower wheel than they are supposed to be on, and the 315's will only be an inch narrower so it shouldn't be too bad.

heres a few pics of my strut reconstruction.  Just took a couple pieces of 2" schedule 40 pipe and ground it out to fit over the strut.  I welded them around in a few spots, mainly to the original spindle mount tabs, then welded a couple pieces of flat stock on.

They were unknown(probably stock).  They came with the brakes.  Mainly I upgraded hoping that they would have better braking while waiting for vacuum to rebuild.  Sometimes I wait for brakes and its a little unnerving since my burgundy car had no wait what so ever!

Welcome the newest member of the failed aux shaft club! On my third run at an autox today, it just sputtered and died. Tried changing the tps(since I still had one hanging there) and that didnt help. Tried a couple different tfi's when I got home-no luck. Pull distributor cap and cranked it, and gee it didnt move  So guess what I'm doing this week

usually when you loose the distributor gear, you loose the aux shaft too.  I have a spare aux shaft, and will try to find a NEW gear, bronze or otherwise.

well thats alot worse than mine is.  My gear is only half gone on the distributor.  one side is perfect, the other side is gone, hence why I think its my own doing.  Same on the countershaft.  Hopefully I will get it all apart tonight and see if the oil pump driveshaft is bent too, or what.  Also check the bearings while I'm at it and change the rear main(since I couldnt get the pan out without pulling the trans and flywheel-its leaking anyway)

Awesome build, with some great fabrication man!

Sorry if i may have missed, but what size rims and offset did you end up running?  I know you planned on stretchin the fenders, but i didnt see any pics of it, looks like you just rolled them??
Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on June 08, 2011, 05:36:52 PM
Wheels are 18x10 with +20 offset I believe.  I couldnt get anybody to widen them, so I just rolled the fenders.  I can still get a 315 on the wheels, but only on the rear.  No clearance on the coilovers in the front with any wider than 295's.

Engine is getting new bearings tossed in it for now while I start building another engine-just a little ahead of schedule.

another 2.3 or a 2.5.  Gotta weigh my options though.  Either of them will have good rods and pistons(crower rods,cp pistons) and maybe a set of honda oil squirters.  Did them on the engine in my red tbird and wasnt too hard.  I do know it will get a melling m127 oil pump.

project new engine has begun! Got crower sportsmans and cp pistons in the mail today. Glenns getting me another set of honda oil squirters(already got the block machined for them, just need to drill and tap the holes). Tonight I got the engine bored and honed. Tomorrow I need to check a timeline on how quick I can get the block decked. I might try to get the head combustion chamber and bowl work done so that the block and head can get decked at the same time. Not looking forward to doing the head since I have 40 hrs in the head on my burgundy tbird.

This project started after realizing how bad I'm punishing this stock engine this weekend. I'm sure it saw at least 7300rpm multiple times. Not a good thing for stock rods.

These arms should fix my caster issues too, since they are 3/4" forward offset MMarms.  I can already see a difference in the angle of the strut.

yeah, I figured it worked correctly on your's, I may as well copy it and it should work, lol.  Sorry for ripping off your engineering.  I know I stared at the front bumper stuff for quite a while last year and couldn't figure out the best way to do it and keep both the turn signals and fogs so I just cut a million triangles out of the steel bumper, lol.  I truly didn't realize how heavy the bumper supports themselves were until I took the rear supports out and they were 12-13# together without a bumper on them!

I missed the new engine update, looks nice! Any particular reason you chose to keep the m86 pump vs. the changing to the m127?

Bumper looks nice. If mine didnt see any street time, I would be doing the same thing. I saw on corral that you are thinking of switching to 16's. They will definitely help get you the clearance you are gonna need with forward offset arms. I would bet the huge 18" hoosiers you have now would do a number on the front of the wheel opening and inner liner!

Well, I think I just mislabled it.  It looks nothing like the factory ones, so it should be the later m127.  The bypass is in the rotor cover.  For the arms, the wheels always looked back in the wheel wells.  I think using 86 bird arms is what did that.  So it should be fine.  It only moved 3/4" forward and thats about how far back they looked to me.  If I have to massage the wheel opening, it shouldn't be too bad, and don't have to worry about fender liners since those are long gone.

Aha. I Looked at the pic again, and I can actually see the "m127" on the side of the pump. That's what you get for reading the words, kids. Remember just look at the pics... :hick:

Hey you can get another 10lbs or more with the k-member, and you need to get a k&n pre-filter so your filter doesn't get so dirty, makes a huge difference, I use them on my quads.

Not allowed to change the kmember.  If I did, they technically call it a tube chassis car and add 350# to your minimum weight.  The filter will eventually be changed.  I don't see it being a real big problem myself.

I will have pics of my latest endeavors with this project tomorrow.  Made a spoiler fitting the class rules(max 10" height) and made it out of 1/4" lexan(found a place up in toledo called Seeger Metals & Plastics - I would recommend them!).  I pretty much have it done, I just need to come up with some more bolts/rivets and paint the hinges.  Although I would give the longacre spoiler supports 3 out of 4 stars because the 4th one broke before I even put it on.  Stupid aluminum threads galled and I almost could've broken that thing by hand  I'll have to order another one of those to replace it so I'm a bit annoyed about that.
I also bought a full set of koni double adjustable shocks/struts and the coilover kits for them, so hopefully I can get this car driving even better next year

Hopefully tomorrow I will remember to take pics of what came in on monday that I've been waiting for since september.

I've been spending a good amount of time trying to figure out how to get tires 1 1/2-2" wider than what I have on there now.  I did manage to finagle the front coil over springs up high enough that I got the rear 315/30/18's on the front with plenty of clearance.  This will give me more playing room to get goodyear 25x13x16 slicks on it.  Planning on getting a set of REAL RACE WHEELS for it in 16x12, most likely with their solid centers(Look like autodrags) or their standard centers.

hell, I loved the 1.5 on an unported head.  I'm hoping this acts better than my homeported iron head with a 1.9 in it.  My 1.5 wanted to go farther than my 1.9 in rpm range.  7000 is where the 1.9 quit pulling, but the 1.5 easily went 7500 so that probably tells me I messed up on the porting on my iron head.

I'm loving this setup alot already, and its still not running right!  At this point its only on 10psi and its spinning the street tires(265/35/18 toyo R888's) almost as hard as the old engine did on 22psi.  Runs down the road pulling 10"+ of vacuum, and idles a steady 900rpm.  The only thing I dislike is that the exhaust got a bunch louder, lol.

Its been a while since I updated this, but I have been having issues with my old oil breather tank(moroso - pretty much the exact setup stinger performance has on thier site) because everytime I would make a move to catch the car sliding, the tank would fill with oil and overflow.  Tried different things including welding more baffles inside the tank, but still did it very easily.
Anyways I was searching online for oil breather tank pictures and came across a couple pics from a company in austrailia that had a tank with multiple chambers and two breathers, AND a pricetag of $600!  I looked at it a while and thought I can make that pretty easy so last week was spent building the tank and getting it installed.

So far I have run one race with it on concrete (usually the only place the oil overflowing happened) and it didn't leak a drop!  Did exactly what it was supposed to so I don't get yelled at at the SCCA Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska  September 4-7.  See how I do against 43 other drivers!

We went to Oscoda, MI a couple weekends ago to do a trial run on the popup camper we are taking to Nationals(dad is going too and driving my car), and we were running old tires to practice on before we put new tires on to scrub them in for nationals, but the old tires didn't last through the spin I couldnt catch.  Somehow the tire got caught in one of the wide concrete cracks and ripped the tire down past the metal cords:(  Got both front tires changed before the next run came around, even as a two driver car!

I figured 2 years of using a 20oz pop bottle for a radiator overflow was pushing it and I finally got something else made.  This is the peice of crown vic driveshaft I cut off to fit in my bird.

Also got all the turbo water cooling lines, and oil drain line finished, ready to put in the car.  Going to freshen the engine before the season starts.  Going another .010 bigger to get rid of the 4 .002 deep gouges in cylinder #3.

Got all the flares widened.  Still have to cut off the excess(getting some 1/8" fineline tape to get a straight line around the fender tomorrow) and weld in a stiffening rod around the edge since it doesn't appear I have enough room to make the lip around them like I was hoping.  It'll still look good though.

Nice! But you should widen the whole side of the car imo. Would look killer!
Go with the E30 M3 look where the widening starts at that body line that goes along the whole car.
That would be really cool! Typical 80's look :)

Definitely not doing the entire side of the car.  I'm  trying to get rid of weight on this car, not add it.  The only reason I added here was because I wanted the tires to be covered.  The gain of over an inch of tire tread is worth the couple of pounds it did to do it.

Finally got it started tonight.  Runs great on locked timing.  Of course I'm going to have an issue with the commanded timing with the spout.  As soon as I put the spout in, the timing jumps all over the place between about 10* before TDC to 25* ATDC.  Even with this problem showing up, I can tell its going to be a screaming setup!

I've been trying to upload a video to photobucket from last year running near or above 8000rpm for a lot of the run, but keeps screwing up.  Going to try youtube later.

Ok, got the timing fixed.  Went to work on it at lunch and had a no start.  Nothing like a broken signal wire from the tfi to start off with.  Got that fixed, and then back to work.  Thought about it all afternoon and then it dawned on me that when I finally got the megasquirt to actually control the timing, I couldn't set it with the spout out.  Had to do it with the spout in, so now its running the way its supposed to.  Also got all the coilover springs changed tonight.  Just have to finish filling the coolant, and get it off the stands so I can finish the exhaust on the lift.

I did get to drive it yesterday for the first time on the new turbo setup, and I'm going to have to say it sounds like a Honda or something now.  I think the equal length header changed its sound considerably.  Kind of like a Subaru with an equal length header that sounds like a Mitsubishi EVO

Heres a video that my codriver made today.  I have no idea how he actually beat me today.  This new turbo comes on probably 1000 rpm sooner than my old turbo, so I kept spinning the tires getting back on the throttle coming out of the corners.  I love this turbo, but the rest of the car is going to need a retweeking.

Very Awesome. Which Turbo you runnin' now?

Can't wait to get my Bird back out to the Skid Pad later this year.

Its a Borg Warner EFR 6758.  Its T25 d so I couldn't just bolt it up on an e6 though.

Finally got the front splitter done.  After our first local of the year, the turbo comes on so quick, it kept spinning the tires in the corner and throwing me sideways.  I figured if I got the splitter done, I could turn the rear wing back up so I could get more traction.  It definitely worked because I didn't have any issues with it tossing me sideways, just spinning one tire like an open differential car.  Think its time to retire the old Detroit TruTrac and replace it with a Detroit Locker.

because they don't last very long.  Less than a year.  Learned this with my burgundy car, and it never picked a rear wheel up like this car.  Quite a few national winning guys run the Detroit locker, so it must work fine for them.  If one is off the ground, what better way to keep it moving forward than to lock them together.  I wouldn't go as far as a spool which is the cheap way out though because it never unlocks

fordguy545, awesome runs at the Dome last weekend. I love your car (of course). I hope my fellow DET Region Folks were good hosts for you. (I haven't run AutoCross with them, but many of the same people do Ice Runs, RallyCross, and PAX Track Events....Those I have done.)

Yeah, it was a really good event.  Been up there a couple other times.  Usually ESP really gives me a run for my money, but I don't know if I just got that much faster since last year, or if none of them were driving to their limit or what.  I really didn't expect to have raw times 3 seconds ahead of anybody else.  Unfortunately I hit the same cone the last two runs, and the last run would've been enough to get my first index/FTD.  Was also the first time I got to use my new gopro.  This was my third run.

And 3 pics from the event.

Those actually aren't the Bogarts.  The slicks on the Bogarts and I am not getting along.  I just plain cannot get them to stick on anything.  All the car wants to do is drift with them on it.  The wheels in the photo's are actually the SC replica wheels that I cut in half and widened 2 inches to a 17x12.  The car has 335/35/17 on all four corners now.

Dad and I ended up going to a Corvette Cleveland autox at Sandusky Speedway.  Sandusky Speedway claims to be a 1/2 mile oval and the autox consisted of 2 laps around the track with a flying start using the tracks timing transponders.  The course consisted of a whopping 3 cone slalom on both the front and back straights.  Really simple and made perfectly for corvettes(so far we've found that corvette people can't drive.  On a traditional autox, they have to take any thought process away from them and give them really narrow gates with only one possible line and who can get through it the fastest).  My fastest time was 45.x seconds making me think its not a 1/2 mile oval, lol.  This was FTD by a couple seconds over dads gt40 kit car with a TT 500 Cadillac engine/trans out of a 76 Eldorado.  I ended up spinning rod bearings on 1 and 4 running it that hard unfortunately.  I thought I had taken care of the oiling problems with the M127 oil pump, but apparently not.

Ok, so Crower has me really pissed off right now.  I ordered 4 new rods(in stock) and 2 replacement rods(backordered-2weeks) when I ordered this stuff.  Finally get an email back today asking where my rods are, and they haven't even shipped them yet.  Still have 4 days before they will ship them when the 2 other rods are ready.  WTF.  Wish I had made two separate orders now!!

Well, I guess its been a while since I updated this.  I got the engine back together about a month after I blew it up.  Its been running strong and actually had it tuned in early Sept.  On 20 psi, it made 333whp, 354 tq.  Feels a lot stronger than that.  I had to switch to race gas after that tune because it blew a head gasket the next week(nice huh), but its not a big deal.  This years upgrades are going along pretty steadily, and have already lost a ton of weight.  I'm pretty sure the car weighed 2820 last year, and have already gotten it down to 2667 with a passenger seat or 2637 without it.  I haven't even gotten to making any of the carbon fiber parts yet!  I thought I was going to have a hard time getting it to a low 2600 range, and 2500's are going to be easy actually!  On to photos.

Sorry, I haven't been posting a whole lot lately.  Hopefully the car will be pretty again by spring.  I have to redo at least 1 of the flares.  Smashed it 3 times with cones flung off the front tire.  I also need to make a carbon fiber hood and trunk lid, and that's the point I'm at now.  I also realized why the car is so light.  It always got weighed with 12-13 gal of fuel left in it, and now it maybe has 6 in it.  That probably accounts to the 50# I've been scratching my head over.  I also figured out if I could get a decent tire for my bogarts, I could loose another 50+ lbs, but just can't justify the cost of AVON tires.

It probably looks even weirder because I cut out the spring pocket and has been cut off within an inch of the frame rail for tire clearance.  I destroyed 2 tires in spins when they got sucked under it.

Ok guys.  Need your opinions on two different paint schemes on the new hood after I make it.  I plan to have the center of the hood natural carbon fiber, and the sides painted, but don't know what would look better, 1 big section, or two smaller sections split in the middle.  I masked it off with 1/4" tape at lunch to try and get an idea of what it would look like.  Between the carbon and the blue will be a 1/8" silver pinstripe like the break between the black and blue around the car.

Title: The CP autox bird
Post by: fordguy545 on January 09, 2014, 10:57:34 PM
Yes it will be real carbon.  I'm in a weight loss kick right now.  I know the trunk lid that I do will have the portion that's black now left carbon fiber, and I'd like the hood to be something like that too, but I know racing stripes look weird on these cars.  I think if I leave it totally bare carbon, it'll look weird.  I guess the final decision comes after I get the parts made lol.

I think I'm going to end up plastidiping it to verify better.  Going to make the mold first though in case it doesn't come off easy.  I have to sand and polish the hood first though before making the mold.  Theres a bunch of dirt in it I have to sand flat.

Update time again.  I've steadily been working on getting these flares looking better.  I actually got something I like now(didn't like last years flares).  I have one getting close to being done, but its still got a lot of work to go.  They now have a 1/4" rod around the edge, and a stiffener in the front middle of the rear fenders.  Also got some parts painted that I plan to make molds for the carbon parts out of.  However the top of the trunk lid is still not to my liking, so that'll need some more work.

I really hate how much filler I have had to put in these to get the shape I wanted.  Most of it is fiberglass filler, so it should be pretty strong.

Great work on the flares!

It must be tough to tear into the car like that after it had been painted up and 'finished' once already.

Yeah, I hated doing it, but I had to do it to make the car faster.  My index times went from mid teens overall for the year to 3rd in region.  Multiple fast times of the day, had one top pax(2 if I hadn't coned it away), and 6th and 11th at nationals with 39 in class.  It will be pretty again soon, and that's all that matters at this point.  Some of the cars at nationals just look like they've been attacked with a sawzall!

Well I finally got all the body work done, and the car is in the paint booth now.  Hopefully get primer on it tomorrow and get it sanded smooth and then color on Sunday.  That's what I'm hoping!

Thanks guys!  Hopefully I can get some pics of it outside this week sometime, hopefully before more snow....Wed is calling for 3-5"

When I backed it out of the paint booth, I promptly got it stuck.  Hoosiers don't do well in snow!

Gumby, If I could figure out a good way to clean them, they'd be clean again.  All this brake dust is rusted on because of so much rain at events this year.  Hopefully this year won't be rainy again, since another car got its windshield cut off this winter lol.  Last year was a Solstice, this year is a Miata.

Still have to sand and polish the roof, but that clear is so rock hard it kills my sandpaper right away.  Same way with the doors.  BTW I hate how the touch up paints come as a base clear now instead of just gloss black.  Makes it really hard to find where I touched up lol.

lol.  As long as mine still hold air, I'm not too worried.  I figure they would crack around the welds.

Do have a few more pics

Still have to sand and polish the roof, but that clear is so rock hard it kills my sandpaper right away.  Same way with the doors.  BTW I hate how the touch up paints come as a base clear now instead of just gloss black.  Makes it really hard to find where I touched up lol.

Regards from Phil....he is a pal of mine from Torino Cobra Forum, he thinks you are a pretty amazing guy, i tend to agree.......

I'm going to be honest, I was pretty skeptical about how this would turn out looks-wise.  I'm glad to say that those flares turned out BAD ASS.  Good work man!

Yeah, I know Phil.  He's a good guy!  It's kind of a shame he sold his Fairlane.  I still wish I had been successful in getting his "Death Clunk" out of his rear axle in that car.  I think at this point I know what the problem was, but can't remember if that bearing splash shield was in there or not.

I saw in the back ground a pinto and a merkur, Does the pinto have a 2.3 under boost??  I always wanted to build one.  Oh BTW those fender flares look great.  I showed your pics to my buddy the other day, he is another fox freak, and he loved your car.  He bought my 87 Turbo Coupe from me when My pops made me down size from 5 cars to 1.

Lol.  That pinto is stock.  It will probably be for sale in the spring.  Carbed 2.3/c3 auto.  Dad has a tube chassis pinto with almost the exact same setup as whats in this car.

So your flaired bird, a pinto, a xr4ti, and is that another aero turbo coupe I spotted.  How many 2.3's you got rolling around there?

I have the flaired bird, the burgundy TC in the pic(previously made roughly 400whp), and my 86 Cougar XR7.  Dad has the Merkur, a turbo pinto, and the NA pinto pictured.  Mom has a 1928 Gazelle kitcar with an NA 2.3/c3.  They are all drivable.  Probably have 4 or 5 more engines on the shelf, or taken apart.

Well I have finally started making the molds for the hood and trunk lid.  So far, I only have the mold for the top of the hood almost done.  Needs a few spots filled with more gelcoat before sanding and polishing before it's ready for making parts.  I layed the gelcoat on the bottom side of the hood tonight, and will be adding the reinforcement tomorrow.  I rushed the top of the hood when I did it because I didn't wait long enough for the gelcoat to cure.  Figured it would be cured if I waited till the next day.  Also got almost all the stuff to do the carbon fiber today, pretty much just need the resin for that yet.  I'd like to get all the molds done first though.

The trunk lid I painted before was not enough to my liking for making a mold.  So I sprayed a whole bunch more primer on it, and sanded it flat again.  Ended up looking MUCH better.  Should definitely make a nice part from it.

Making your own hood?
Wouldnt it just be easier to buy one from VFN or Hairyglass? :D

Youre putting a lot of work in to your car, love it!
I was a little uncertain about the fenders at first but now with the car painted it looks a lot better!

I want carbon fiber with bracing in it.  The only one available in carbon fiber is only the top skin, no bracing.  Also I hear horror stories of gigantic gaps and horrible fitment with the fiberglass hoods.  I figure its possible I could sell them once I'm done too.  I know I could corner the market on carbon or fiberglass trunk lids for 87/88 cars.  I take pride in knowing that I've done almost all the work on the car myself.  The only things I didn't do were the porting on the head and intake, and the tune on the engine.  Every other thing I either did or made.

I could almost guess carbon fiber.
Actually, if the CF trunk turns out well, sign me up for one.
Was going to order one in fiberglass but rather have carbon fiber. More sturdy and feels like it will last longer, and lighter ofcourse!

So yeah, sign me up for one!

Well had a bit of a setback with the mold for the underside of the hood.  I put plenty of release agent on it, but it just plain wouldn't come off.  Took me 2 hrs but I finally got it off, minus 1/2 the gelcoat because it was all still stuck on the hood itself.  Don't really have a clue what I did wrong, but I hope it doesn't happen again!!  Pretty well screwed up the hood that I used for the mold, but I figured it would be a sacrificial one anyway just for doing this project.

Well, I've made some headway with the molds for the hood, but still a long way from being ready to make parts.  I figured I'd better put them on the back burner for a little while so that I could finish up getting the car ready for the season.  Finished up the fuel cell firewall and it turned out really nice.  It doesn't even rattle!  Its actually the quietest this car has ever been inside since I've had it.  I also seated in the brakes this afternoon, and they are going to be a learning curve.  They take such little force to lock the brakes up that I will have to be really easy with them.  However in doing that, I found out that the car doesn't currently run right, and I'm hoping its something simple, like timing, but I have a week to figure it out.

I know I haven't kept up with this thread for the past year, but after all of last years upgrades, specifically the brakes, I broke a lot of stuff.  3 transmissions in all due to brake hop.  I have it sort of sorted out at this point, but I think at this point I need to get shocks built specifically for this car.  I've been using off the shelf shocks for years.  Never had any custom valved ones before.  Looking at either JRI or Penske's for the rear.  The front is behaving so I will leave that alone for now.  Anyways, this year at nationals I ended up in 3rd place out of 41 in class.  Apparently I'm the first 4 cylinder car to ever podium!  I do still have 2 seconds to make up to get to Mike Maier.

So far this years progress has been slow because I completely redid the turbo setup in my other car.  So far all I've gotten done is going to aluminum exhaust that I ran all the way to the bumper this time.  Made it a lot quieter in the car.  Even though its about 5' longer, its 10 pounds lighter.

Give Griggs a call and see if they can help you out with the dampers.  I believe Bruce custom valves Koni dampers so he could probably be another source.

I've always wondered what a 'Bird would look like, painted 2 tone, with that little "bend" on the body being the dividing line. And it looks freakin' awesome.

Keep it up...ed nice work :)

Well its been a while again.  Time for a bit of an update.  I am getting the carbon hood near completion finally.  I've had ALOT of help from Brett(Wildcard) on THEFABFORUMS.com and he has shown me the way.  I have both the the top and bottom made, but need to make another top.  There were a few blemishes from the infusion lines that I didn't like, and the bracing underneath was a complete pain in the butt to get vacuum bagged.  My finished hood should be around 12# compared to the stock 60+#.

I also picked up some afco double adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs that I am going to have revalved, and go to SLA front suspension.  I already got Howe racing upper arms and screw in mustang 2 ball joints, and a pair of hybrid ball joints to go from the mustang/tbird arm to the mustang 2 pinto spindle I will be using.  I'll grab a pair of 5 lug brake rotors and cut the rotor part off and machine it down to a hub so I can pretty much keep my current brake setup.  Just need new brackets for the calipers.

And of course photobucket is down for maintenance.... so I guess follow my facebook link for pics.  I do have the blemished top that I may consider selling, but for liftoff use only.  The trunk lid is coming either later this year or next winter.  Next winter may be when I make a lot more exterior parts.

Still working on remaking the top of the hood.  Hopefully the carbon fiber will show up tomorrow.  Also trying to figure out how to keep a factory type hood latch.  Thinking I will have to go to the pin latch style like on a later model ford ranger.  Something so It only has to grab a pin, because with the factory tbird latch, it hits against the bottom of the hood before it latches and I think that will eventually break the carbon in that area.  On the blemished hood, I have filled everything with some more epoxy resin and have most of it sanded flat, and it will look good except for the dark stripes on either side of the infusion lines.  Make me an offer on that piece if you are interested.  It weighs 6 lbs.
