well starting it anyway..
it won't be finished for a little while.
this is where i started.
first i build a new panel for the 12"s
then this..:D
it used to be this..

i'm installing a carputer i'm just not sure which processor to use i have a couple, 3 gig p4 processor or 3gig dual core.. with a a$$ load of ram. and it will have internet allso :D just have to buy a few more things like , PSU and sound card, oh and the a$$ load of ram;)
stay tuned
Nick
just a teaser i redid the monitor in the dash.
i had to take the picture with my phone i have to get another digital camera..
i used this motherboard for my carputer
http://www.mini-box.com/D510MO-mini-ITX-Intel
and this power supply
http://www.mini-box.com/M4-ATX?sc=8&category=981
the carputer has a 2gig stick of ram
40gig 2.5 drive for the OS
and a 500gig for the full copys of the dvd's i have, and for music
how about this i used the factory CD changer for the computer case;)
oh and like i said i have internet in the car :D sprint 3g
Nick
Looking good - car pc's > everything. I'm against the Atoms though as they consume no less power at equal performance levels versus the Core CPU's and aren't much cheaper either. 13W dual core atom that performs on par with its two cores as a Core Solo 's single core at 1.3GHz and only 5W TDP (plus 2.5W for the external northbridge/video chipset).
So what all are you going to run off of it? Just music, movies, navigation, and internet? I'd like to find a higher resolution 8" 4:3 ratio screen (not 800x600) for the Tbird's dash but it's unlikely to ever happen. The 4.5" 1024x600 screen in my UMPC is leaps and bounds better in every way than the "top of the line" 7" 800x480 screen that one can buy :(
That's a smooth looking install!
ya i was going to run a dual core 775 socket but i went with the atom for a few reasons
1, fit better in the factory cd changer case
2, it doe's drain less power then a dual core mini atx about 100 watts less. the atom board maxed out will drain about 80 to 100 watts. a dual core 775 socket mini atx will drain about 150 to 200 watts.not that the power supply i bought could'nt handle it but in the end your looking at somewhere between 4-8 amps 10amps max vs 16-20amps and around 24amps max.
the lincoln factory cooling fan drains like 40amps on it's own.
3, i did'nt like the way aftermarket radios looked in the dash i have the old setup i had in the cougar but aftermarket radios stick out past the trim and over the trim.. yuck!
4, now i don't have to tote around a bunch of DVD's and CD's. they are all on the hard drive no rips in the sense audio compression, full clones.
and yes it's being used mostly for music DVD's for live concerts and CD's and sometimes the internet.
thank you
i don't get a lot of compliments on this message board on my audio video and installation skills.
Cool, I like the desktop wallpaper thats a nice touch!
very awesome! I'd love to put a pc setup like that in. Very well done.
Just a note - my E8400 system draws like 60-70W max when running IntelBurnTest and Furmark on a Geforce 9300-installed motherboard. This was with 2GB of RAM (much lower sleep power draw then going all out with 4GB). The system has one fan, a DC-DC power supply, a SSD, and a 2.5" 5400rpm hard drive. Running the system underclocked at 900MHz (closer to the performance of the Atoms at 1.6, but still better for multimedia), the system drew somewhere around 30-35W loaded down with the same utilities. My motherboard doesn't undervolt but if it did, I may have been able to shave another 5W off the system, if that. Idle with the E8400 stock was around 20W and FSB overclocked (don't remember the speed) idled around 25W.
I think your numbers are way off as this was checked with a 13.8V power supply and three different ammeters, starting with a shunk and ending with a Fluke multimeter when I found that the power draw was next to nothing.
I should add that you DO have to add conversions if you're going from DC to AC and back - add like 30% for both conversions, total. The above numbers do not include the 8W LCD screen that brought the system up more but I didn't care as I was testing mostly for suspend and powered off power draws. The load testing was only done to see how long I could run the system full steam with the engine off. I need the power of the Core2 though as it'll be handling all audio processing with eventually 3 way up front and sub. I see one core being utilized like 70% with all the audio processors in place.
Aaaaanyways, the Atom is still fine for many tasks but true processing and light web browsing. I wish more people would take the initiative and install carpc's as he capabilities of an x86 system are great.
Care to share more information? Using integrated audio? What speakers/tweeters and how are they installed? Future plans? I'm a slacker with mine as I've had the parts for probably nearly a year now but refuse to install anything until I know the car can be parked securely inside a garage. The system does run great on the bench though ;)
Cool install , it looks like it was meant to be there.:D
But forgive my ignorance , what are the advantages of a computer in the car?
To make geeks happy. Everything from GPS to EEC and TCS communicat6on. Right now I haul around a UMPC for this task and it's a pain. A good DAC can also give you sound quality above anything you can buy in the car audio aftermarket. There are frontends, and you can add more to them, to do anything you want without having to use the mouse cursor to navigate around like a standard PC.
Standard car equipment REALLY sucks and limits you to a few basic tasks that it does horribly. It can cost quite a bit though...
Edit:
Video recording. I may not use the PC for this anymore but tying cameras into the unit for driving, and trigger them on when the alarm gets set off, can pay for itself if you catch something on video just once.
Ok , that makes sense.
I guess my kids are wrong and I'm not really a geek :D
like i said
mainly going to be used for audio ie DVD's and CD's
audio play back on the outputs of the computer is 24bit 96khz
and is 5.1 integrated sound card MN10 chipset but i am using it in 2 channel mode. each output plug is stereo ie front L/R rear L/R and using the last two for subs..
i used these speakers for the doors and rear QTR's
http://www.audiosavings.com/products/6x9-and-5x7-Car-Speakers/%282%29-NEW-RE-AUDIO-250-WATT-5x7-6x8-2-WAY-CAR-SPEAKERS/RE5X7FR.aspx
i will be adding speakers to the factory tweeter/mid-range modules that are in the doors and rear QTR's and will fit like a 3.5" speaker max
the subs are
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-032
the amp's are ok they do the job not as good as my old ones but put out more then enough power and are clean.. just not as clean and efficient as my old ones but i was on a tight budget for amp's..but again they work fine maybe one day i will update them..
two of these one for the fronts and rears and one for the subs
http://www.audiosavings.com/products/4-Channel-Car-Amplifier/NEW-CRUNCH-PZT1400.4-1400-WATT-4-CHANNEL-CAR-AMPLIFIER/PZT1400.4.aspx
I just realized you were the dude who posted about your home theater with like 9000 speakers a couple of months ago . ;)
I now fully understand the carputer :D
And again, it looks great , nice job
:laughing::laughing:"9000 speakers":rollin:
yep thats me.
since you brought it up it reminds me that after i built those speakers i should have used about 18000 speakers with the power i'm running threw them;)
just kidding but i should have used 6 or 8 drivers for the front and center speakers. but i really wanted to have all matching speakers so thats why they where built all the same.
if you would like the spec's for them they are not hard to build. or if you would like to build a smaller set for like desktop speakers.
i would be more then glad to share;) could be made tons of different ways ie with 3" drivers 4" and so on and as a cube instead of towers.
Nick
regardless of how practical that is, Thats one of the single most badass things ive seen on this forum. Takes a lot of time and thinking to get that done. Way cool good work man
thanks ;)
one of these day i'll get a new camera and take pictures of the whole system.. i'm sure people would like to see the inside of the factory CD changer with the motherboard and the hardware in it. like the two hard drives i have in it. and so on :D
oh and i think i forgot to mention that i have USB plugs in the factory ashtray location in the center console under the cover. you would'nt know they where there unless i fliped the cover. :D
the whole system looks factory in side the pen 15pit of the car down to the factory speaker grills. even in the trunk down to the factory CD changer"carputer" mounted in the factory location. oh and even under the hood you can't even see the 4 gauge power cable for the amp's under the hood looks factory all so. the car looks bone stock!
i'm in the middle of changing all the sounds ie XP start up and shut down sounds and all the event sounds with all duke nukem responses..
