I'll take a guess here...

Eric won the lottery, but the winning ticket is in his brown pants.  Hopefully, in the next couple of days, he'll recover his brown pants and cash in the winning ticket.  With his winnings, he will procede to buy up and restore every remaining Cougar convertible.

Yes Scott…ol’ E Man found a source for NOS 1983-86 mirrors. ;)

I wanted to wait a few days to receive the mirrors before I said anything here. They just got here this morning. Upon close visual inspection, if they aren’t aftermarket new, they certainly are Ford NOS. The date stamp on the glass is 94, probably the last year of manufacture. Chrome is about as close to perfect as you can get. Glass is also excellent. Passenger side glass is convex as is standard. In short…these are the real deal.

It also appears that the windsplitter from the 1987-88 models could be adapted to these mirrors. This is the newer mirror body design (1986-ish and up) with the extra screw hole in the mounting side, and the drain hole at the bottom. I haven’t tried to put the windsplitter in so buyer beware. It just looks correct to me.

So how much were these, you ask?

$25 US each, plus shipping.

Yep. That’s it. And for right now the supply is plentiful for most styles. I suggest that anyone looking for show-quality or just plain new mirrors hop on these immediately.

So without further ado, I shall reveal the sources. I can vouch for their positive feedback.
Please read CAREFULLY as there are many different ones listed.
(Don’t forget that black/grey ones are a lot more easily painted!).

Oh, and I forgot to add this info...

I've been looking for NOS mirrors for about 7-8 years without luck until now. So...yeah. Buy them now.

Also, recently on eBay there have been a few RH chrome NOS cable remote mirrors for upwards of $100 US. One was at $200 US. The one listed here is almost a tenth of that.

Jeremy, thanks for those links.

For those that don't know, you can sometimes take a 1986-ish mirror and turn it into a 1987-88 type mirror. There's a difference with how the two-sided bolts are mounted to the mirrors.

1983-86: bolts are directly in the mirror body
1987-88: bolts are in the windsplitters, windsplitter is bolted to the body

There needs to be one extra hole in the body in order for the windsplitter to be mounted correctly. Early (1983-85ish) mirror housings didn't have that hole in the mold and couldn't be adapted correctly for the hole. Pretty much every 1986 mirror housing I've run across have had the extra hole. Therefore, one could take a 1987-88 windsplitter and mount it to a 1986 body, and make it work on the 1987-88 door.

Again, it appears that the extra hole is in the 1983-86 ones listed on eBay.

I'll try to dig out my mirror parts tomorrow and get some pix. Hopefully it works.

Got more photos to explain differences with 1983-86 and 1987-88 mirrors.

Above, left to right: 1987-88 windsplitter, 1987-88 mirror with windsplitter attached, 1983-86 mirror housing, 1987-88 mirror housing with windsplitter removed.

Above: Close-up of the mirror housings. Note the extra hole on the right mirror along the side; that's for 1987-88 cars. The hole is needed to mount the windsplitter properly. An older housing (left) without the hole CANNOT be modified to accept the windsplitter correctly.

Above: A windsplitter by itself, face out. Notice the orientation of the 3 mounting holes.

Above: The reverse view. The three mounting studs are in the exact same position as 1983-86 direct-mount studs.

Now here's the big question, answered:

Above: The NOS 1983-86 mirror from the eBay listings, foam cover removed. Note the presence of the extra mounting hole, plus the drain hole on the underside.

THEREFORE: From the listed eBay auctions, one CAN definitely 100% purchase a 1983-86 mirror, remove the mounting studs, add the windsplitter from a 1987-88 car, and bolt them onto a 1987-88 car.

Hope that helps those with Cougars that thought they'd be left in the dark.

Now here's the big question, answered:

THEREFORE: From the listed eBay auctions, one CAN definitely 100% purchase a 1983-86 mirror, remove the mounting studs, add the windsplitter from a 1987-88 car, and bolt them onto a 1987-88 car.

Hope that helps those with Cougars that thought they'd be left in the dark.

Thank you very much for sharing.  I just bought a bunch myself.

I spoke with the guy yesterday also and he told me they were all gone now(elelctric chrome 83-86) but Jerry found some more this am at 35 each so I guess more have surfaced. Be interesting to know how many sold due to Eric and this site.

Oh yea, just like that.  Ive got a set of Bird mirrors I will be swapping for my chrome ones.

Will the chrome handle look out of place?  That is my concern.
Title: Heh. (The Big Reveal Is Here).
Post by: vinnietbird on July 02, 2010, 09:57:40 PM
No. The chrome handle fits well with the chrome trim. In my own opinion, with the chrome mirrors ( on a very dark or black cars) bulk too much chrome in a small area. The black mirrors ( as on Jerry's car) break it up and help everything "flow".

I agree... Some cars look good with chrome. most don't for some reason. I think the vert will be ok. It has them now and it looks good with all the extra chrome that it has on it. I hope after I change the color, they still look good. If not, I'll paint the old mirrors and sell the NOS mirrors for a profit next year.

I got my mirrors last week and have a question for you guys - is the compression-seal fluff supposed to be solid or break apart easily? I can still see it doing its job when compressed up against the body of the car but one of mine is broken into multiple pieces and will be hard to get mounted. I think that one will just need lots of silicone or something as the seal is in pretty poor shape. Did it just bake in a warehouse and turn to a crumbly mess?

I think the chrome mirrors look the best on dark colored cars like black, dark blue and cherry or burgandy. I am not a fan of all black mirrors because they disappear and make the car look thin or like it is missing something that gives the car an illusional "span"... That is why I opted for white mirror caps which is atop the black mirror housings on my 08 Mustang. I do like the lower black bit of the mirror housing contrasting with the white upper.

I also think the Mark VII flag mirrors are nice compared to the standard issue integrated ones that come with our cars. Something could move me to do another swap but the Mark VII mirrors have Lincoln badge logos on them and I am afraid they might seem out of place, much like Mustang pony center caps on wheels fitted to a Tbird.

Body colored mirrors work best on lighter and brighter colors. When I had my 1989 Tbird, I had the black mirrors painted the same sapphire blue metallic as the body. This was when I did my 1996-97 nose swap. I really liked the illusional span so much as a result, especially since that car was soooo slab sided compared to earlier cars.

Are those black ones of the 87 or 88 black version.  My knowlege of them is that the 87's are a flat black and the 88's are a glossy black.

if you want glossy you gotta paint them.

I've seen a satin and flat, never a glossy.I just grabbed a cloth and some billet aluminum polish and started to work.Glossy black plastic mirrors in short order, and no paint or paint chips to ever worry about.

I'm not denying it.I just haven't seen them.Mine are glossy now......My new ones are still in the box.I ordered them a few weeks ago when Eric showed the link, then, when mine arrived,I opened the box, counted them, closed the box,and placed the box on a shelf to remain for an unknown amount of time.

Besides, there were too many for me to buy alone. ;)
