'88 2.3/A4LD
Needs a little TLC. :rollin: But runs, drives, and freezes you.

This might have been why it was overheating:

That thing is ripe for a 2.3T swap.
That's the plan! Later down the road. The '80 is getting track prepped, and the '88 will be the DD.....if nothing comes up.
Nice score. Im digging the flames on the console:mullet:
What happened to the passenger quarter? :hick:
I haven't a clue. But it's going to get replaced.
I was wondering that myself! If I didn't know any better, I'd think it was :flame: at one point...
I drove it all week to work (108 miles roundtrip) getting 25mpg. The '80 gets about 9mpg. :)
Looks like a great project in the making! I cannot wait to see your progress!
:rollin::rollin::rollin::rollin:
What a day today. Failed inspection due to high NOx level, so I'm about to go pick up a new catalytic converter from O'Reilly's. Thought since I was out I would go get a fuel level sender from pick-a-part, and my exhaust pipe broke in front of the ler. Went to another O'reilly's and got some flex pipe and clamps. Got the new sender in, and it works! Merged my exhaust backed together, and all is good for right now. I'll let you guys know if it passes inspection. (I'm going to try to get the cat on and back to the inspection station today.)
Wish you were closer, Id donate the entire exhaust offa the 88 parts notch I have. Good luck with the car.
It passed today!
Good deal man:rollin:
congrats man :D
Wow lol. Does it look roached?.....well, yes....is it an awesome DD? Hell YEAAA!!! :rollin: You don't have to care what the hell happens to it, man I'd be just doin burnouts in that thing all the time. Should be a fun lil' rat!
I only bought it because it gets good gas mileage, and I currently drive 108miles roundtrip to work Mon-Fri. I'll clean up the body and respray it the same Scarlet red, convert to 5-lug, and put on a 2" dual exhaust using the stainless tails I have from a V8 car.
I was able to get the 5-lug fronts swapped onto the '88, and yesterday I got axles and drums to finish the rear. And boy did I need some front end work! The calipers seemed to be seized, as the brake pedal was pretty hard and you had to keep it pushed down to hold the car at a red light. The front struts were worn out, and the front wheels were badly unbalanced. Swapping over the 5-lug stuff from the '80 fixed ALL of those issues.
I'm in no way making a project of this car, but it does need a little TLC. With it being my only mode of transportation, I want it to be as comfortable and mechanically sound as possible. I will be picking up another 2.3l(this one has 175,000+ miles and burns oil ; still passed inspection AFTER replacing the catalytic converter), and am currently on the lookout for a good A4LD core to have rebuilt. (This one maybe fine, but would like to have a backup just in case) The looks of it are not on the "high priority" list.

Wheels! Woohoo! Lol now all the paul walkers and vin diesels will come outta the woodwork :hick:
This thing is still kickin'! I replaced the 2.3L with another that had dual plugs two weeks ago. That was fun. Drives great!
Anyways, I picked up a wrecked '95 Mustang GT convertible for $300 last week and plan on using the motor and AOD-E in the coupe. Most of the car was stripped except the drivetrain. Still had complete the exhaust. Car has 220,000 miles on it, and doesnt look like the motor has ever been touched. I did find a receipt for a trans service in '05.
What you see here is how i got it:

Since it was missing a gas tank, I picked up a '89 F150 fuel pump(factory external) from a junkyard for $50 and plumbed it into the stock fuel lines and a couple of gas cans(one for supply, other for return). After swapping in another distributor it fired up. No check engine lights and has good oil pressure. I'm happy. I would have hated to get it in the '88 just to find out the motor was no good.

The squealing you hear is from the distributor I borrowed. After it warmed up, the noise went away.

Yesterday I got the motor out.

Looks like another good deal for you!
wow.. you must have gotten that 95 from someone who reeeeeally needed some body parts lol $300 is an amazing score, you can't even buy a (known) good running motor for that price, let alone motor and trans!
That was a little odd to me that nobody wanted the motor from a GT??
that is odd, but a definite win for you
going to swap the dash and interior? Seats looked okay.
No. My car has red seats from a fox gt(even has the fold down rear seat). Swapping in the dash is a headache I'd rather not get. I did take the wiring from it to use whatever wires I need to make the engine wiring work.
