Title: 3.8 CFI to 3.8 EFI swap
Post by: tbirdsps on April 06, 2010, 04:03:27 PM
It's been a while since I've posted and I was thinking of swapping the drive train from my 92 Tbird in to the 86.

The 92 has a EFI set up that uses the same fuel pressure as the 3.8 CFI so the fuel system should be simple.

Yes I need to get wiring diagrams but will this swap be fairly simple to tie in the engine harness with the 86 system?

There will be some niggling details such as the battery on the opposite side and mostly deletion of parts from the CFI set up.

The other issue is going from a C5 tranny to the AOD.  Will the tranny mount move aft easily or is it a remove and weld operation?

I like the body style of the 86 better than the MN-12 tbird and the 86 feels so much lighter than the big bird.

Both cars need front suspension work but the 86's interior is in much better condition than the 92.  Cloth seems to hold up better than leather.

The engine in the 92 only has 30,000 miles and it's soooo much more powerfull than the 3.8 in the 86.  The 92 will burn the rubber off the tires and the 86 will only squeak them on painted lines. LOL.

I'm thinking right off the start, that you would probably need to use a harness and computer from an 88 3.8

I hadn't thought of that.  I see your point that the 88 harness and computer would simplify matters a lot and make the merge way easier.

Thanks, I'll keep you in mind.  I can't pull the trigger on the swap until July.  That's when the 92 retires.

The engine is a rebuilt Ford unit so I don't know what's been done as to overbore etc.  It sure is a powerful 3.8.  Smoking the tires is easy.

Actually they are 235/65R-15s.  Yes it really only smokes one.  Open Diff.

Now my 82 Cougar wagon can only make a squeak if the tire starts off in a little sand.  88hp 200 six.:D  I'm not in a hp race with anyone. LOL.
