Hey everybody!! Im working on my 1985 Thunderbird and swapped a 545 big block into it!
This is the combination:
545 big block, assembled by Troy at FPS (Ford performance solutions)
Kaase P51 heads, unported w/ beehive springs
RPM crank and I-beam rods
Ross forged (.030 over) pistons, which should make about 11:1
custom hydraulic roller cam - 248/253 @ .50 duration (yes I had these backwards back in my thread about exhaust pipe size) ..
.643/.635" valve lift with 1.73 rockers, 112 LSA
1050 dominator, with untouched victor intake, smoothened passeges of ports and the but kept the cloverleaf design
We're using a C4 tranny built by Dynamic transmissions, rollerized and what not which should handle about 1000 horses, along with their own 9.5" convertor, and a JW bellhousing..
**the way we decided to mount the C4 trans was that we broke the welds on the factory crossmember (which was initially for an AOD)... and we moved the member as far forward as it allowed and re-welded it.. now it aligns perfectly with the trans mount
more on this, the shifter we just mounted is a Hurst pistol-grip Quarter stick that has a roll control button on it... should look killer and function well!
also, we're using a set of hooker super comp 2" swap headers and modified the #7 header tube (3rd tube on driver side header), so that it would clear the UNISTEER steering shaft U-joints
we're also using Hooker's swap mounts.... and here is some VERY important information on this...
*****!!!!!!! MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU USE THESE MOUNTS, ADAPT THEM TO THE ENGINE SO THAT IT WILL ALLOW IT TO SIT AS LOW AND FAR BACK AS THEY ALLOW!!!!!*****
....other than all that.... we're using a stock k-member and control arms for now... but later on we're planning to use an AJE k-member and control arm set, with coil overs.....and a set of Dynatech 2-1/8" headers
plus which, we will then replace the weak 7.5" with a built 8.8" with either 3.55 or 3.73 gears... and we'll also replace the rear factory upper and lower control arms with pieces from CHE performance
other than that.. here are my pics!.. updates soon to come!

Sick and wrong! It's awesome lol.
Video when it get's fired up??
what a sleeper, I'm loving it!
Are you planning on earning a return on that investment?
Cool ride ! :burnout:
Thanks for posting.
Nice Bird !!!!! I love the look of it with the single exhaust tip out back. Are you keeping that? What else is in store for the old car?
lol no no, those pics of the single exhaust is when we first got the car and put a set of 275/60 BFG's on the rears... i already cut off the exhaust, no way that this car is staying factory stock
as you can see.. we're doing a big block swap... and no way 700 horses is factory stock lol
although its in pretty good shape.. (32,000 miles :hick:)... we're prob gonna get a new paint job when it's all finished... or for the most part of it..
and i really REALLY hope that....well since this car is in my father's name... that we don't sell it in order to build another project like we last did with our 72 mustang with a 393 cleveland in it... I miss that car, UNBELIEVABLY responsive that engine was... ahh mann
Thanks! ....ehhh.. return?.... lol well, im kinda hoping that we keep the car itself ..and if we plan to build another engine... then I hope it'll go in this car.. since its virtually identical to a stang and uses almost all the same parts
I dont really want to think about selling the car any time soon.. we just started building it... but that's just me.. I kinda get attached to certain things lol
Interesting.
If you have still have it, I'll take that old CFI air cleaner lid off you.
Sick and wrong!!?? lmao love it!! Oh you're def gonna see a video when it's fired up... and doing something like this... :burnout:
:shakeass: to chevy's....
Might need some SFC's in there lol.
Also that C4 likes TINY behind that thing. You sure its gonna hold?
lol....wait.....what's an SFC?
oh the C4 will handle.. I'm more than sure, and know plenty of people with big block/C4's and running 9's over and over... and all of em last!!
Our tranny was built by dynamic, I believe the particular version was called the M2... rollerized planetary and what not... should handle at least 1000 horses
SFC = Subframe connector.
The cage in the car will help some however.
cool! now that engine is worth the time and money for the swap your doing!
Oh!... we already had subframe connects installed at the same time as the cage..
Crazy Don in Oceanside, NY did both the subframe connectors and the cage... I don't remember what material was used for the connectors, but the cage was made with chromoly tubing ;)
Not enough that you got called in Chuck's thread on your narrow-mindedness, that now you've got to run your your trap in someone else's thread too?
Ass. :flip::flame:
I wasn't talking about selling it.:burnout:
Yeah no kiddin'. He could absolutely rape people on the street with that car. Its like a textbook "sleeper".
Nice work! Looks like it was a beotch getting the steering shaft and headers to corporate with each other. Heck it seems close with my 5.0 and shorty headers!!
Where in NY are you? Gonna bring it to Captree when it's done?
...oh!.... nevermind.. I knew that :toilet: lolol
I live in Nassau, captree is like..ehh 20/25 mins from me..
well, with using either 3.55/3.73 gears, we wont have to wind up that motor on the highways...and that it will be able to run on pump gas... .....i think we'll definitely be bringing it down!
But only when it's finished.. or at least when we get the new spindles and 8.8 rear installed, new wheels and paint job
..I cant wait to take on the ZR1 vette's on the way back home after Captree ..they won't know what hit em lol
oh... posers will be raped! ........that didn't sound right... :mullet:
anyway, i cant wait till it's finished... it's gona be nnnnastayyy!
Im not sure about it looking like a sleeper though.. plus the way it's gona sound.. it may not be obnoxiously loud... but it def will sound healthy!
speaking of exhaust, we're going with a 3" exhaust w/ x-pipe... and the lers are gonna be Flowmaster 50 series HD's... this particular series have 4" internal openings for reduced backpressure compared to other versions..... and with dual outlets per ler and turndowns (4 turndowns :D)....
yea...... its gonna sound good
Man I think it looks good black and with smaller diameter wheels (15" or 16"). It just has that kick ass look like maybe its stock but you just can't be sure. Of course if it is loud as hell, then that might give it away. :D This car makes me want to build a big motor 4-eye T-bird or Cougar
badly...
a 460 is DEFINITELY worth it.. you can even have the cast crank lightened, rebalanced and what not, stronger rods, fresh set of main and cam bearings... forged pistons.. nice hydraulic roller cam
get a pair of edelbrock or trickflow heads and port them out and get a victor intake and a 1050 dominator or 850 double pumper carb....
headers.... 3.55 gears... and you'll be freakin haulin :shakeass:
seriously!!!!
PS....we're gonna get a set of skinnies up front and 325/50 MT drag radials out back and we'll probably use either the star or lite wheels from jegs, instead of weld wheels which are more expensive.. its all the same stuff except the jegs are 1 piece wheels yet lightweight
.....:hick:.....
Believe it or not, the Jegs wheel is an improvement over the original Weld design.
Dude, drop the attitude. The guy wants an engine that has good power (5Hp less than a 5.0 HO) and will improve the wieght bias of the car. Get over it :beatyoass:
Ohhh really!! Honestly I thought they just tried to mock up a 1-piece design of it, but I never thought of them being an improvement.
after seeing it in person, I ended up liking it better... Especially the fact that it's a 1- piece rim..... And $135 for a 10" rim lol
Now that is a monster....
what? there no attitude on this end of the computer. :D
just thinking the amount of work. it takes to put 545 big block in his bird ,in place of the 5.0 CFI is lot. with the owner built custom header's and wiring, working fuel lines and tank. then swapping tranny & rearend and front brakes and all.
just wished I had keep the one I did.
Someone explained it to me a while back. It has to do with the way the wheel distributes the load from the weight of the car.
very interesting!.. never thought of that
(http://i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy103/gthemelis87/project%20thunderbird/DSCN0247.jpg)
Dipstick from SK Speed :D
Lol I got all my tranny accessories along w/ the tranny and converter from dynamic, but you prob are definitely right about SK speed having that dipstick!
"Think with ur dipstick, Jimmy!!" lol
You sir are a hero of the first order!
That thing will be a monster!
Troy built my 427 Windsor too. (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c244/racerxmd/th_427onEngineStand.jpg) (http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c244/racerxmd/?action=view¤t=427onEngineStand.jpg) (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c244/racerxmd/427ProjectX001-1.jpg)
dude thats sick. im in new hyde park. gimme a hollar if you need help
Looks like it will be a KILLER
mmmmmmmmmm that looks good!! did you run it or dyno? or have any idea what it could be making??
btw, thats a procomp distributor right? mine too lol
wow you need to get a video of the thunderbird when its done.
Hey man whats up from a fellow Long Islander ! Hows the Bird coming ?
heyyy hheyyy hheyyy!! :mullet:
....i still havent taken pictures in a while! ive been busy searching for a full-time position....aint easy when u just finished college :\ ....
but anyway, its coming along! ... we put in a summit direct-fit radiator, installed a Derale tranny cooler w/ fan... we put a new dual fan setup from a ford contour which fits nicely.. should pull around 3500 cfm which is great for cooling!..
we put in the gauges, finished off the shifter...still need to put the tach in there but thats nothing... we're getting pretty close...
we just gotta wire up the ignition, the relays to the tranny fans, fuel pump and radiator fans...and then hook up the switches directly to the fuel pump/tranny fan/radiator fans...
its getting reaally close to finally firing it up :D
yeah, that fan moves I have that one in my car and with 95* florida air still only used one, but it draws like 40 amps
Cool deal man , I cant wait to see the finished product Maybee in person . I might end up on Long Island in may or june . I'll let you know . A dual fan set up works good , thats what I am running with a Be Cool Radiator . I run right around 195 degrees in the middle of the summer .
Lets get that wiring set up and fire her up !!:burnout:
i wonder how hot our engine is gonna run, we dont plan on driving it if its too hot or too humid... definitely a nice day, nice evening and night kind of car... unless we're at the track, then it doesnt matter lol
ohhhh i cant wait to start 'er up :hick:
chevy guys are gonna  my :shakeass:.........seriously...
oh and def! hit me up if ur up here, come check out the bird... prob wont be ready at all by then, but mobile yes lol
Ok I took some pics to show you the recent progress we've made, as well as a couple pics of the how the subframe connectors were made on the car.... more to come!

What happened to your oil pan? It looks like mighty mouse tried to kick his way out. I have dreams of building a big block car.
lol nothing happened to it, we just took off the chrome one that was already on the tranny from dynamic, and we ordered their own deep pan that i think holds 2 quarts...or maybe a little more... pretty deep
Hey Man whats up , I was on Long island for a quick 2 days and got over to the Bellmore train station friday night . There were some sick cars there but No Tbirds . Do you go there on friday nights ?
heyy! i didnt know if bellmore would be on this early, but i guess since its been getting warmer that people have been starting it..
nah, i havent gone, usually you dont see t-birds like ours there but sometimes a couple turbocoupes if any... even though there are plenty of nasty and nastier cars...wait till they see mine lol
There were some real nice rides there . When you go there my brother is there alot , He has the orange 05 Mustang GT with the polished whipple supercharger and black stripes . You would also know it is his because of the Stang in his grill , the head is the stangs skull . Here is a shot of it . I told him to check your Tbird out when he sees it . He knows what hes looking for because he knows my Bird and how fast it is . How close are you to driving time ?

Kind of a strange request and sorry to get off topic but can you post a picture of your console box? I no longer have room for a full size one and I think one like yours will work for me. Do you know what year/models had these?
This is going to be a killer machine!
Keep up the great work.
TED
You are doing a great job on this project! Not too much different than putting a Cadillac 500 in there and it brings back a lot of memories.
It is really something that you got the headers to fit using the stock crossmember. You would not believe how much more room you would have with an aftermarket one.
I would drop the trans cooler in the radiator and put on an aftermarket one.
I bet the front sway bar goes away soon.
You are doing it right, keep up the great work.
TED
That is impressive, but them red cloth seats can't stay can they? Nice work.
man that is awesome! I did a 460 swap and it wasnt too bad. The hardest part for me was getting the steering column thru the headers...i had to dent them after I paid to have them jet hot coated, almost made me cry!
Ok everybody, we finally got the engine started and running pretty well!!!
Here are some pics and a video of recent progress!

Nice job!
Man, that is one bad-ass ride! I miss the Island for this exact reason! Hopefully this summer i will get down there to visit my parents and be able to catch something at Bellmore or captree. Awesome job on the build!
Hey man whats up ? Sounds good , When are you gonna get it over to Bellmore Train station ?
Hey buddy! Thanks!
Ohhh, I wish it'd be soon! But I dont know when for sure... we still need to do a little body work and painting... we still need to put in the 8.8 rear (we haven't even built it up yet)..
I'd say that if the body work and painting was done, then I guess we could bring it.... even though the car is not really finished (stock 4 lug wheels totally give that aspect away) lol
Very nice Job you did there. My only concern is that the battery location is going to screw you up when you decide to put in a fuel cell. I tried to use the stock tank and even welded in a rear sump but in the end nothing worked and I had to put in a cell.
I mounted my battery up on top using a plate under it to make it wide enough and they gave me more room on the floor.

Stock four lugs will fool them all , When you go look for my brothers 05 orange stang it is Bad A$$
i know what you mean, but we got a pretty big tank.. i dont think we're gonna need a fuel cell, since we wont be driving the car every day anyway lol.
but what you did was smart!
It's not the size I just had a problem with the pick-up in drag racing. I don't know if the Turbo coupe is any different but I had to race with a full tank to keep it from running out of gas half way down the track. The launch would uncover the pickup and half way down there was a terrible bog.
Then to solve this I welded in a rear pick-up in the stock tank. This took care of the bog but when I got down to the end of the track and turned it would slosh to one side and die. So even then I had to run with a full tank to this from happening.
To solve this I put in a 10 gallon fuel cell and so far so good. The problem here is that the trunk has to be sealed off with tin.
The faster you go the more problems are created and you are going to go plenty fast! Just trying to give you my experience to maybe save you some problems down the road. You will not not see the problems on the road but the track brings out the worst of the problems.

.. thats the little sump you put on the stock tank? no wonder the fuel cell works better lol!
i have a wider fuel sump on my stock tank... that should hold up though i feel, since a lot of people use the particular set-up i have on it... right?
On that Dynamic trans, what bell housing did you/they use? I can't quite read the tag on it. Nice work, too!
EDIT: Nevermind, I read JW.
Im not 100% sure... but it was supplied by Dynamic and I think its an ATI bellhousing... its definitely SFI spec though
