anyone know what size threads these are in the radiator?
Uh, yeah, they're proprietary. Why do you ask?
NPT threads of some size,, doubt you would find a nut that fits perfect in order to go to purchase new fittings. ford still sellls the new fittings pretty cheap though.
i just cut up an old milk jug and wrap a small piece of plastic around the line. next i shove the plastic up into the back of the fitting. this spreads the keeper tabs out so you can yank the line off.
if its leaking,, the interior oring could be replaced on the fitting itself from what i have heard , i just purchased new fittings.
I tried to find an adapter for the transmission when I was upgrading, and could not figure out the threads or even find new fittings(jcassity!) finally I gave up and cut up the old fittings and welded adapters to them. Works great, coincidentally.
Upgraded to custom SS braided lines with JIC fittings at both ends to an external trans cooler. No rubber hoses here!
Also, the fittings are the same at both ends of the cooler lines, at least for my 83 w/ C-5. Not positive about your 86 w/ AOD.
i have a radiator that came with a bunch of used parts i bought a while ago for my cougar. i'm going to use that radiator in my truck. i wanted to plug the trans cooler line holes. whats the worst thing that can happen if i don't plug them? nothing?
sorry . i didnt mean to put this in drivetrain.
P.S. the truck is a manual trans. thats why i want to plug the cooler lines.
*Shakes head* Don't worry about the holes, unless the radiator leaks into it, it will be fine. If it leaks, it's no good anyway. Mine are uncapped.
According to my Bolt Depot gauge they are 1/2-18
Having second thoughts about this. I replaced my radiator many years ago and put new trans cooler fittings on the radiator. I have two Ford service part baggies that say "one package of two pieces". I took one fitting out of each bag, so the ones I have left must be for the transmission end.
mine came as a pair as well. i used all of htem an yes iirc, the transmission end is a differnt size.
If you buy a radiator for a mustang, they don't ask for which transmission, it comes with plugs for it. You can buy new fittings in the help section at auto zone.
