Title: Driveshaft question......
Post by: vinnietbird on September 26, 2009, 04:55:22 PM
I got a replacement drive shaft at the boneyard and while I was installing the u-joints,that vibration ring (?) on the drive shaft yoke came off. Will that cause any issues with the drive shaft or it's balance?

Had a shop remove mine when they put new u-joints in and balanced the shaft. No problems.

I'm getting a cop car aluminum driveshaft and having it shortened and balanced for the Sport.

I picked up an Aluminum Aerostar shaft and I was quoted...I think $60-70 for the balance, and another $60-70 for the shortening, but up here there are only about three shops within a reasonable distance (1-200 miles) that can/will do it.

In Oklahoma City,it'll cost about $85.00 to shorten and balance.

There was this place in Gresham I was referred to when talking with a good transmission shop - I will have to find their card again. I have no clue on the pricing though. I thought Aerostar shafts were a little too long for Mustangs but too short for Thunderbirds/Cougars?

what should the length on a t-bird shaft be? AOD/7.5 and c4/8.8 if it would make much of a difference

The aerostar one I have is to short for my t-5 and 8.8. Here a post with some measurements in it.

Well, I've got a v6/C-5 with a 7.5" rearend, and my stock shaft measures about 50", and the 1995 Aerostar shaft(Welded, probably out of a 2wd model) measured about 55" or so.

Good to know - I should look for one too then. I've got 1" more to play with than aod's, having a transmission with a 1" longer bellhousing. I really need to get out to some yards/cars soon as I'm bored to death with everything basically working as it should.

You want to sell it, kidding. That 55" is that counting the yoke that goes in the trans?

Who's selling what? The 55" was U-joint to U-joint, same with the 50".  (Sorry for the late response guys)

Just found this:

And remembered this thread from awhile ago.

This is what made me look it up:

I posted this in the wrong thread

car-part.com shows RWD Aerostars and P71 cop car aluminum DS's are 47.5-48" "W-W". I'm assuming the "W" is referring to the yoke.

And the Corral guys say that the AWD Aero star is a perfect swap for T5 or T45 sn95's, so it would be 3" too short for us

Does an aluminum driveshaft help? How so?

Lighter in weight, and that also means less inertia so it spins easier ;)

also, aluminum drive shafts are less pr0ne to vibration. The Cop car drive shafts are longer,so,shortening and a balance job is in order. No big deal.

Not really vinnie, They do twist a bit more with more hp. I'm sure I will start an argument with that statement, So bring it on.
