Tried to watch a video on Facebook, told me I needed Flash Player (which I needed to upgrade mine so it made sense), and just like that my internet does what it wants.
I am running IE now because my Firefox didnt upgrade properly and I had to delete it, but it never removed correctly and I didnt really have time to mess with it. Now this virus wont let me even try yo download Firefox.
I believe it is contained to IE, but I could be wrong. I did a quick and full scan with McAfee (just bought again a week ago), cleaned out all my internet files, cleaned out whatever I could think of. Still there.
What it does is blocks certain website and reroutes me to one of their's, or will redirect me to their "search engine page" which is really just fake links to more spam BS.
I dont know what to do.
download spybot from download.com . Try downloading google chrome.
try this one its works pretty good too
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
The issue with these is it knows what im trying to do and wont let me load the page, or re directs me. Its really becoming a PITA, my McAfee has stopped about 8 Trojans tonight though, all due to the pages it is re directing me to.
No go on that one either Bob... Its really g me off because I have no control on what it is doing.
How about I email the current version of Spybot? Would it let you download it then? I can rename the file to 238dfjhf0 or something just in case it is looking for keywords.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Post a URL of what it is sending you to. There may be info out there on getting rid of it.
your going to have to take that drive out and scan it on another computer to get rid of that thing. or low level format the drive to wipe it, then reinstall the OS and everything.
next time get a Mac......... JK
your working in safe mode right?
XP or vista or what?
If its XP, do this.
start, run, type in msconfig.
Go to the start up tab and clear out everything. It will not hurt your system stability. It will just stop things like yahoo messenger or your printer software from starting up everytime you start it up. This is more likely then not where your problem is.
Go to my computer. under the address tab, like where it says my computer, or my documents, just about anything, copy and paste this.

*Edit* open this link in a new window. Copy and paste will not work because of the tiny url stuff.
That is a direct download link to spybot search and destroy. Do an update the first time you run the program.
After that download either google chrome, or netscape. Stay away from IE at all costs. IE is also built into windows XP and vista. As soon as you have problems with IE, your windows should already be formatted with all information deleted. Generally programs like spybot will help out, but it is just masking the effects. Sooner or later, one of these programs will make it into your windows system files and you will not be able to delete it without formatting your hard drive.
Spyware is everywhere in everything you download. Some drivers and software come with spyware pre installed. Be very cautious of what you download and stop using internet explorer and you should be okay.
well i guess your real problem is that you use IE according to everyone so far :toilet:
not those viruses and such...
anyway, FIRST disconnect your computer from your internet source(dsl phone line cable whatever)
download highjackthis from someone elses computer onto a memory card or somethng and put it on your computer. if you want ill send it to your email cleverly disguised as a virus so itll get past your antivirus :P
like bob stated you should be working in safemode while you are trying to fix this.
by the way what exactly was whatever you could think of reguarding what you deleted and such, you didnt just run cleanmgr did you?
cougar86_89@yahoo.com, send me anything you guys think will work.
Vista.
I know every little about the inner workings of a computer so please bare with me.
I deleted anything that was a temporary file that was related to the internet. Whatever I could find related to IE that wasnt going to make it not run I tried to get rid of. I honestly have no idea what the hell im doing.
How do I go to safe mode
on start up tap f8 and select safe mode. Not safe mode with network.
You really should be able to do what I said and be able to clear them out. If you need a personal walkthrough, send me a PM and i'll send you my number and walk you through it.
DVP, a heads up you should remove your email address from your last posting it would be better to go thru PMs.
if you dont know how to get into safe mode do this instead.
win+r to use the run function
type msconfig
go to the boot.ini tab
click "SAFEBOOT" and select ok
your computer will restart(or it asks you if you want to i forget) and let it restart
it should now boot up in safemode
this is for Windows XP i have no clue if Vista works the same as i have never used it(and never will)
if someone here is more familiar with Vista it would be easier for
them to help you than me
I said I would never us XP, and now I have one XP computer and one vista...
Overall, vista is the same different name.
Haystack, when i do the address bar (after I open a link, copy, then it is soon overtaken and redirected) it comes up in a window
List the URL
Program(or Application) not found
If someone emails me it I will try that way. I am still trying yo hunt it down.
ALSO, if I click on a HELP link i get the same pop up saying Application not found
Also I can not update Windows.
This was what my GFs computer had her do. It had her remove the last update, then update again. Well I havent had an ( POP UP AGAIN) update since 10/24, no idea why, but I get " WindowsUpdate_80240016 " as the error when i try to update now. Again, it blocks me from the help link...
Just ran Windows Defender, quick and full scan.
Message comes up on report
The program can't download definition updates
Error found: Code 0x80240022
I bet that has to due with the lack of updates
6am-
Downloaded Google Chrome and Malwarebytes to flash drive. off to see what happens.
Haystack, Is it download . com or is .cnet? I didnt want to take the chance of downloading more .
Yes its cnet
.cnet technically, they are owned by the same people.
take a look at the combo im running on my thread in here.
so far so good.
when you run into a virus , first step is to alway run in safe mode and go hunting.
Clamwin will rototill through every bit and byte and put a stop to bad things. It also does does some things that finally enables malewarebytes to delete files it could not delete before.
my combo>
clamwin
malwarebytes (full version)
spybot
CCleaner
my browser has recently changed to firefox. Bad thing is that IE needs to stay on your machine for the most part as many other MS Office programs need it/depend on it in one way or another.
Cnet has a lot of info on this topic ,,its a matter of opinion but for me, I stay on the beaten path I know works. If it aint broke, im not fixing it.
Ran Malwarebytes it cleaned out a few things, cant rememberhow many. By that point it was 6-630 in the morning and I was still up so i dont remember much. The virus is still in there.
Downloaded Spybot to my flash drice but it will not install. Ill list the error when I try it again
Have you run anything that scans your boot sectors on the partition?
when you run your scans from the software you use try to remember the names of those files it deletes and scroogle(or google for you normies) them to get a better descrition of what virus you have and how to get rid of it.
let the internet do your virus hunting for you.
and again, have you tried to use hijackthis yet?
run msconfig, go to the start up and clear everything out. That is where most of the redirectors have hid in my computers.
Cant get it.
I backed up all my docs and pictures. I am willing to lose all my music and whatever else to get this thing back.
What can I do to reset it all?
what type of computer, and did it come with a "windows" disk?
Sony Vaio PCG-7133L
Windows Vista
I dont think I have a Windows disk. I will look in the box. I could probably get one for nothing.
What sucks is I just bought McAfee a month ago an I dont know if it I will have to pay for it again.
I'd call macafee first and see what they say. Newer computers almost always have a D:. A seperate partion on the hard drive that is read only, and contains all of your windows files and drivers. If you throw windows only on there, you may have to hunt around a while for drivers.
I can't verify that this is accurate, but it seems pretty complete.

Running clamwin now. It found it, but still waiting on it to finish. It really is going over every little thing.
Ran Clamwin last night, ran Malwarebytes' tonight, running McAfee right now.
Everything seems to be back to normal. Pulled 56 infections that couldnt get before.
Thank you all for your help. Between no books for school and no computer I was on the fast track to failure.
I just hope Im not speaking too soon.
this is a bit late... but... You know the windows system restore program or whatever its called. i've had a virus that would operate while sitting in a system restore. it took me like 2 days to figure it out, but all i did was create a new restore point and the virus was gone.
just thought i'd warn or help someone trying to FIND a virus.
-Drew
then it was a piss poor virus. most of them regenerate or , worse case disable your restore points.
yeh it only was screwing with my IE (i use firefox now).. the same ol story of it wont let you download stuff or go to certain pages and then you'll be pulled to a site out of nowhere.. a friend of mine had a virus that disabled control over the OS and shut down the keyboard and formatted his hard drive.. right before hell let loose he tried to back info up on a ext-hard drive.. so after the reformatting was done, he tried to upload the info back on the fresh HD and the virus did it again, it was also backed up even though the exe wasnt intentionally backed up... so he lost all his tax stuff and other important info in the end, and had no control over it.
Well still running healthy.
I used the same on my parents computer and found all kinds of things they where just working over.
My set up will be
Clamwin
Malwarebytes'
Spybot
How I dont end up with anything again.
