Title: AOD cable
Post by: mechanized on May 15, 2009, 01:22:10 PM
The shifter cable in my '87 cougar is becoming seized up. I have called some tranny shops and the Ford dealer and they have told me they can not get a new cable or me. My question is will a cable from the same year mustang fit? It seems like it would, but I thought I would ask to make sure.

I think the ends are different on the Mustang cable...a few people have reported that to me anyway. The T-Bird/Cougar floor shift AOD cable has been discontinued for some time and it's extremely difficult to find one. You might have better luck with a universal Lokar cable, to be honest.

Really? I was told the Mustang and T-Bird cables were the same by my parts guy back when I was considering a floor-shift upgrade. The junkyard had a Sport, but the tranny was gone and the cable was cut. Before buying the shifter I wanted to see if I could get the cable, and how much $$. I actually asked my guy for a T-Bird cable and he told me the part was obsolete and crossed to the Mustang cable. He has been known to bring the wrong parts in for me in the past though.

I ended up not doing the swap because when I went back to the junkyard a few days later the Sport had been crushed. It sucked, because it had a mint porno red interior with the TC style seats, too  I returned the cable but felt guilty for ordering, then returning it. I wish I'd known it was different, I'd have blamed everything on him :D

So... how about a Mark VII cable?

Good point on the MK7 cable. I'll have to check into that.

Not sure about the Mark VII cable...I would hope so but this is Ford we're talking about. ;)

The end that fits to the transmission lever is probably similar on all AOD cars. If they're not the same, they can be modified to work with little effort. It should just be a slotted, flat end that bolts to the lever.

The part that's different is the end that attaches to the shifter itself. AFAIK all the Fox floor shifters are unique and pretty much nothing interchanges. I think Trevor (ravagewolf) on the old board did a hybrid Mustang/Thunderbird shifter and said it wasn't worth the effort because nothing mated up. (Maybe it was RJ also...?). All I remember was that the person told me that the cables didn't interchange at the shifter itself.

Which is why I suggested a universal (or Lokar) shifter cable, because I think it would be easier in the long run to adapt that, than try to get another Ford cable to work.

I just threw away my old perfectly functioning shifter+cable.  Couldn't you have asked a couple weeks earlier?

You need one for a column shift car? Or are they the same? If its column, I may have one.

The Mark VII is a totally different setup. From my experience with the cables, the shifter cable (floor shifter,non-turbo car),is unique to the Cougar and Thunderbird.I tried Mustang cables, and TC cables, none of them worked as they should.

The Mark VII has a whole different setup... AFIK the cable is unique to the '87-'88 Sports and XR7s... A TC A4LD cable is different as well... Maybe a earlier cable for the TC/XR7 with the C3 trannys could be used, I really don't know...

The column shifter uses a rod linkage not a cable.
