I found an '86 Turbo Cougar. The guy is asking $500 for it but will sell it to me for $400. It needs a new ignition silenoid and a batter to be road worthy. Runs good..doesn't burn any oil..turbo is in good working condition.
He says all the power options work,seats, windows, antennae, lights etc. The interior is in decent shape, missing an armrest and glove box door.
My main concern is the automatic transmissions Ford used in these cars. Are they good transmissions? What do I need to look for when I am driving it to know if it is good or not.

Tranny or not, buy it. The 4 eyed xr-7's are getting pretty hard to find as they weren't a "hot ticket" in their day.
It's NOT an A4LD, but a C3.......but it's a rare car, and sounds decent, I'd give 400 or 500 for it if I had the money.

The '86s use the C3 transmission, not the A4LD, those are a little better than the A4LD... It's like checking any other transmission, if it shifts normally(cold & hot), the fluid is clean and it isn't leaking, it's probably OK...
At that price I would buy it. It is 1 of 6504 made in 86. I would certainly think you could get your $ back out of it if need be. I just bought one a few weeks ago and its a pretty fun car. I am more of a T-Bird guy but a sucker for any low production car
