Title: 1983 Thunderbird Heritage - 03.03.10 New parts!
Post by: 302 PWR on May 04, 2009, 02:03:03 AM
Well I finally got back into a fox, I sold my old rusted out Altima.
Car has a 302, so I stay true to my user name. I just got it 2 hours ago so my plans for this week are put my Pioneer deck in it, bolt the 10 holes on, and wax the shiznit out of it. It only has 122KM, a couple of rust bubbles and a small dent on the hood and some scratches, an old lady bought it new so the thing is loaded.

Pics tomorrow, my internets is acting slow and I have to go to work in a few hours.

Hey guys sorry about the wait. Gave the car a good wax, gonna apply another coat tomorrow, and I took the mud flaps off and I'm considering selling them as they're almost brand new.

Anyway enough talk:

You know if that car was driven daily I bet it was the mud flaps that saved it from the salt ;)

Nice ride :D

What a nice looking car. Never was a fan of mud flaps but they sure saved that car. My 80 had them also and it has zero rust issues. My son has a 83 Heritage also, do you have any interior pics?

Thanks for the comments.

I'm gonna go clean the interior right now so I'll get some pics after I'm done that. And yes that is the block heater cord. It gets to -45 Celsius in winter here so it's needed.

Oh and I'll make sure to get some engine pics.

Interior pics:

No cracks in dash pad! My Cougar doesn't have any either.

Loaded to the gills.

Pioneer deck will be in Friday.

Interior needs a good shampooing.

But I have a question, tonight after a short cruise the car started to sputter when you came to a stop, it would get so bad that it stalled twice. So me and my buddy took a look under the hood and theres no vacuum line going to the EGR valve, and theres a gas leak on the right side of the carb. Should I get it rebuilt or just buy a 4 barrel?

Car is in AMAZING shape from what the pics show.

Get that thing re sealed and undercoated ASAP! There are 2 guys around here trying to sell theirs (one Elan, other Heritage) in same or better condition for around 3500-4000.

I wonder what 83-84 door panels would look like with an 85-88 dash...

Thanks again for the comments. I picked it up for $2100 so it was a good deal that I couldnt pass up. And the mudflaps did help a bit I guess, but theres bubbles of rust where the screws went into the quarters. Oh and it was repainted once upon a time and it was always stored in a garage.

So can anyone help me with the carb problem I'm having? Its annoying to have to throw it in neutral and rev it at a light to keep it from stalling.

As for the radio it will probably just sit in a box with the Cougar one.

Double post, again.

So I picked up a gasket kit for the carb, gonna start that little project tonight. The 10 holes are on and looking dirty so they'll get a good cleaning this weekend, also I have to pick up an adapter for the deck,  the Cougar one isn't the same, and I snapped a few of the Cougar.

Factory alarm too?! Aside from maybe leather and a sunroof that looks COMPLETELY loaded.

Once it's running good take care of that rust as soon as you can.

Two problems I had with my 85 V6 T-Bird that you might be having with your carb'd 83 V8:

First, is the "stove" still present on the exhaust manifold, and the ducting to the air cleaner? Is the air valve on the air cleaner (the one on the end of it that determines whether the air cleaner gets cold air or warm air) working? If this is missing or not working the carburetor might be icing up. My old 85 used to ice up at anywhere between +15 and -5 celsius (it might seem odd to ice up when it's above freezing, but remember wind chill and its effect on the atomizing fuel as the air is rushing past the venturis in the carb). I'd shut the car off (or it would simply stall), let the ice in the carb melt for a minute or two, and it would start right up again and run perfectly until the ice formed again.

Another possibility is the electric choke. Early 80's Ford chokes are notoriously unreliable. The heater literally burned off the side of my 85's carburetor. I fixed that problem by installing a manual choke (it was trade school days, I was a poor student :hick:)

Thanks for the advice Carm but it ended up being the gasket between the carb and spacer. 20 bucks and a quick carb adjustment later and it runs like a top.

Another update.

Yesterday I put a Cherry Bomb Turbo on and it sounds pretty good for a single pipe. However the carb does need to be rebuilt, the 2 metal cylinders in the front of the carb fill up with gas, thus spilling into the carb and flooding itself out, hence the stalling. So I'm gonna pick up a rebuild kit tomorrow morning and get 'er done. Wish me luck.

Is the t-bird an cfi engine or is it 2 barrel carb. And if it is cfi you might want to check the tps (throttle position sensor) or maybe the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel injection to the cfi. If carbed you my want to check the fuel filter.

Thanks for the advice Tom but it turned out to be a bunch of gunk in the needle valve under the float. Now its running great again but I'm just waiting for another problem to appear. So on Thursday I went and picked up this :

Yeah I considered that but I'm buying some Ponys pretty soon, and then a set of 14x7 100 spokes. I know it will be weird for a T-Bird but I've been a fan of them forever.

Cleaned the spark plugs, set the timing and did an oil change the other day. Oh and I always see you guys hating on Fram so since I'm so close to a dealership I went and picked up my first Motorcraft oil filter.

And theres a walk around video but the sound is screwed up.

10 holes appear to be in much better shape than they actually are, a lot of curb rash and clear coat peeling. Front tires need replacing soon, they rub on hard turning.

The thing I like most on this car is how tight the doors close, no sag whatsoever, they sound better than my friends 2007 Mustang when they close. Well to me anyway.

Good looking car! Cleaned up really nice. Nothing like cleaning up a new car, I just spent about 2 days on my 88 tbird sport that I bought a week or so ago.

I noticed your car has no a/c either, is that just because its a nothern car?

Thanks for the comment. It gets quite hot up here in the summer so a/c is a luxury, for some, but for me I can do with out it. I'd rather have the windows down and belting out the tunes, also keeps the engine bay looking cleaner. But to get to your question it was removed by the previous owner due to it needing a recharge, he offered me the parts that were in a 5 gallon pail but I declined.

Haha gotcha! I though about removing mine but sometimes it gets up to 110 degrees here so its also nice to have but i prefer the windows down most of the time too.
Does look cleaner under there! Good luck with the car man! Sure is nice.

I agree. Of all the cars I've owned I think the 83 TBird has the best closing doors ever. And they have that unique sound!

The trunk on my car was one of the easiest to close too. Ford got it right back in 1983! :)

Good luck with your car.

Yes of all the cars I ever had, the 1983-88 Birds and Cats had the best sounding most solid doors. And the operation of the door handles and latch assembly does indeed have a special feel and sound like no other cars in the world. The cars were even built with thick gauge steel which seems to have resulted in relatively few dings. The following generation Tbirds 89+ and even my new Mustang has steel that is so thin which easily distorts and is more subsceptible to dings.

The cars were of course built in Lorain Ohio highy noted for assembly and build quality and at that time they were considered the highest quality cars in the world, beating out even Mercedes.

You also have that four spoke square hub steering wheel I like which was 1980-83 only. I am hoping I can find a wheel like that one. I am trying to find something that looks and feels better than the A frame wheel they started using in 1984.

On my red 1985 Tbird I actually installed on it a black Ford Tempo four spoke steering wheel with cruise buttons on and wrapped it in black leather. The only issue with that wheel was it poked out a little more towards your chest but I got used to it. Using a pre-airbag 89-93 Tbird wheel makes the wheel sit way too close to the chest plus it's too far a reach for the column levers.

Yeah the doors on these cars are awesome if in good condition, as for the wheel I'm okay with it but it will be replaced with an aftermarket, no not a Grant GT, something unique.

I took this picture the other day and it turned out so great that I had to share it with you guys. (My new background :D )

Dibs on the steering wheel and especially the center trim which I am looking for if you are willing to part with them.

Yep emblems, I've always liked them and they had 5 finger discount days at the junkyard, a little touch up paint and some double sided trim tape is all it took, I'll get new ebay ones someday. :hick:

As for the steering wheel center I'm not really willing not part with any.. parts of this car, anything that's taken off will be put in a box and stored. Sorry, but next time I'm at the junkyard (which will be soon), I'll see if I can find one, and maybe take a couple requests as they usually have some good T-Bird, Coug stuff there.

And off that topic, I painted the drums yesterday, the calipers shall be done when the pads get replaced.

Hey that would be great if you could keep your eye out and snag one for me if you see it. I have been to several salvage yards around here and the 80-88 cars are non-existant. If I was doing a 89-97 I'd have a field day. Thanks for offering to look!

I'm joking about the discount days, and we don't have to give a buck to get in the yards here, at a few you have to sign your life away just in case you hurt yourself out there.

Watchdevil, what type of center are you looking for? The all black, or the darker woodgrain? I know there's a few out there so just give me a heads up.

I'll take what you can find either black or woodgrain but I do prefer the woodgrain. I do know the steering wheel center trim was used from 1980-83. And if by chance you find a 83-84 Tbird or Cougar with woodgrain dash panel trim in decent condition I'd be interested in those trim parts. Also, if you happen to come across a pair of clear 1983-84 parking/turn lamps I would like those too!

I certainly appreciate your help!

1983 Thunderbirds and Cougars have the clear (instead of amber) turn signal lamps in the front bumper strip under the headlamps just like your Heritage model. Mine are the 1984 model year change over to amber lamps and I always liked the clear ones better!

Thank you kindly for your help! It means a lot to me that someone I hardly know would go to such trouble to help me. The salvage yards around here are bare of Tbirds of those model years so you will be my saviour helping me locate these parts.

I have the header sanded and ready for primer, I'm about half done sanding the fender, its just gonna be rattle canned primered until I get enough cash to take it in or spray it myself. The headlight buckets will be painted black, I'm quite fond of the look and I think it will look sharp.

Just have to get a hood, do the 87-88s fit? I'm pretty sure they do but I just want to make sure before I drop cash on it.

No cornering light on that fender?

Great deal on all of those parts though. Good luck with it....

Nope but that can be cut out with a dremel.

I finished the car about a week and a half ago. All I need is a hood.

This fender took a hit some time ago so I pounded it out as best as I could and body filled the rest.

I hope I still have those cornering lamps I took off my 1989 Thunderbird. The lamp housing itself was recycled from the 1983-88 Thunderbirds but with a new seperate outer trim bezel for a finished look. I just realized I would like the cornering lamps installed on the 1984 I am restoring now since it never came with them. I have always been a cornering lamp w!

Vin- Its not the super rare option it is infact a custom one off, I've been told its worth more than the car itself. :hick:

I've never really been a fan of the cornering lights as my Cougar doesn't have them, just another bulb to change to me.

Here are my super kick ass Canadian Tire "Phantome" fog lights circa 1985, I found them amoungst a pile of old car parts my dad has accumulated over the years. I really like them, they look awesome at night with the low beams on, however the cops don't seem too. I was driving a few nights ago with them on and I noticed a cop taking a very slow right onto the street I was driving on, when he was making the turn he shined his A pillar light at me and  that was bright. Didn't pull me over though so thats a plus. I'll get pics of them at night soon.

Oh and I'm leaving the high beam pass side out so I can rig up a ram air like that grey 4 eye with the 87-88 front bumper had.

I added another shim to the top of the fender and it seems to line up a little better.

My headliner has those creases (It came out of a heritage also).
There is actual slits down the corners in the cardboard backing that sorta meet together when installed.

the corners are made like that. the others are from the board being bent. it could have been recovered and they bent it re installing. or from people pushing on it. I HATE that.

Thanks for the info guys.

Did a couple things today, the "ram" air high beam thing, started screwing around with the grille, I'm still undecided what I want to do with it I was thinking a floating bird. And I painted the air cleaner as it was flaking.

The mesh is so fine you can't even see it in the pics but trust me its there. I couldn't find the ricer shiznit so I ended up using this:

Not much of an update but I did a few things:

new plugs
new plug wires (Accel's but they're way too long)
new front brake pads
painted calipers black
did a little more work on the grill
put the winter tires on (studded in the rear)

Pics to follow

Things on list:

T.C. hood, trying to track one down, kind of rare up here
heads (found a motor out of a Mustang cop car)
valve covers (thinking Ford racing)
headers (should be ordered next pay cheque)
exhaust (h-pipe, Cherry Bombs, dumps)
aftermarket or 'Stang intake manifold
4 barrel 600 cfm carb (Holley or Carter)

Double post but I got a new stereo set up!

Custom box made by me and my uncle who is a carpenter, it houses 3 10" subs, just clears the trunk latches, made of out 5/8ths MDF. Its heavy! I managed to wrestle it in there myself but I regretted it soon after.

Amps:

Concept Mono 350 watt
Kaption Audio 2 channel (bridged) 400 watt

Subs:

Pioneer Premier
2 shiznitty no names to be blown and promptly replaced

I also put in a set of new 3.5"s for the front with bass blockers so I don't blow them.

Heh, nice. I was just catching up on this thread and noticed the front end and said "What!". Sorry to hear about it, that is/was a REALLY clean car. When I first got mine, I built a box for two 12's, and I had to slant the hell out of it to get it under the tensioners for the trunk lid, ended up with less than a quarter inch between the magnets and the bottom of the box, and the top of the box JUST rubbing the tensioner. For some odd reason I decided to build it with 3/4" MDF, and oh my! I don't think I could actually get it in the trunk alone the first couple times, but it's not too bad now, just awkward.

Looks good. fits pretty well.

I dont think Ill ever go back to a full size box again. After fighting them in and out its just not worth it to me. Plus I am kinda done with the "loud" stage. Senior year I had the loudest set up, looking back it sounded like ass over all but it hit.

The single 12" I have now, tucked in the side of the SHOs trunk is just enough. Some times I wish it had a little more at lower volume but I can deal with it.

When you replace those subs look at the aluminum faced MTXs. I ran 2 12" 7500 and they sounded a lot better than most other 12"s. In a 10" I bet they would be even better.

The full size of this box wasn't originally planned, I was just going to have something small-ish that would fit down in the spare tire space, but after seeing the size of the magnet on that Pioneer we decided to go a bit bigger.

Aluminum faced? Do you have a pic for reference? I've always liked MTX, decent sound for a cheap price.

Yeah those tensioners were kind of a pain to work around, the hinges were the worst though, good thing I went with 5/8ths then, I was going to get 3/4" but they were all out.

So I'm thinking the box weighs around 150 lbs, the rear end has a sag to it now lol, and the front end is a little higher than before.

Yeah, I was running two Thunder 6000's (Aluminum faced with ridges)with an old MTX Blue Thunder Pro 1502 amp,  that sucker put out over 400 Watts Peak at 4 Ohms! and 300 RMS Bridged at 4 Ohms.

I LOVED that amplifier, unfortunately, something went wrong with the inputs, seems like the board needs to be resoldered or something.

If you ever get the chance, pick one up, very powerful from a small package.

Is the amp mono? I'll have to check it out. I used to have two 10" Thunders in a MTX box and they sounded great but alas someone figured they needed them more than I did.

Here's a few more pics of the fitment and a little pre-winter clean on the car.

2 Channel rated at 150 RMS per channel, I ran it in bridged mode. Very powerful amp for it's size, made back in the day before the cheap Chinese knockoffs came out. The Thunder 6000's were Dual Voice Coil and man did they thump with that Amp. I switched to a new Rockford Fosgate P2002 and I was VERY disappointed at the lack of power. Couldn't come close.

If you want to get the same power nowadays you pretty much have to buy a 600W amp, because everyone uses the peak power to advertise, instead of the RMS.

Yeah, I just put the spare in the well and shoved the subs against the back seat. My friends loved it!

When I did my subs, I didn't want to go too overboard,  because I still needed the trunk space, but I was very happy with the 12's.

I am recalling the days when I had my 1985 IROC-Z. I had the rear trunk well filled with two big subwoofers and all the speakers in the factory locations upgraded with hi-po units. I had two large amps... One four channel amp to run the speakers in the factory locations and one amp for just the subwoofers only. I never had a sound system that loud again. After I traded my IROC-Z for another car, I inadvertantly fried the expensive amps when I was connecting inputs using an adaptor cord that was supposed to have an effective guide pin in it to keep from plugging it in wrong... But it didn't help. The round connector managed to override the guide pin and all the pins in the connector were clocked one pin off all the way around and it killed my amps. That was the last of the big sound systems for me. After that I just stuck with factory equipped sound systems.

In reference to my 1984 Tbird, that sound system sucks... Muddy muddy sound... Despite having the factory original stereo unit, I cannot wait to replace it... Guess I am way too spoiled with the Shaker system in my Mustang.

Not much to report, I installed some 6x9s in the rear deck Alpine Type S 85 watts rms. And I had the carb rebuilt last weekend, car runs perfect now, one pump of the peddle and I'm off, it used to take 3 or 4 and it would stall out when reversing down the driveway.

I'm really impressed with the guy who rebuilt it, he tuned it after and like I said before when running the motor is smooth as glass.

Here's two shots of his motor, he's a Ford guy and he pretty much does everything.

It's a 351 bored .30 over (I think), in a '65 Falcon, he also has the cleanest '68 Mustang fast back I've ever seen and a super clean '91 Fox with all the go fast goodies. If I remember correctly the Falcon runs 10s and the fox runs 11s.

That electric water pump is so cool, I've never seen one before.

Yeah it is purty, all of his cars are detailed like this, even his DD!

So today I installed a set of Alpine Type S 6x5s in the doors, I had to rout new wire thru the already full rubber baffles, that was a lot of fun..  However I noticed the Clarions in the dash have started to crackle already, I even put bass blockers on them. But I'm not really surprised as they were only 45 bucks, I'll replace them with a set of Alpines.

Car audio is almost done a few things on the list are:

carpet sub box
2 new 10" subs to replace the "Thumps" (They sound like shiznit)

Might do list:
capacitor

aftermarket equalizer (Space is the issue here as I'd like to mount 2 guages in the pod under the cd player)

tweeters mounted in the a pillar triangles (I'd make my own out of fiberglass)

And on Friday I might buy a flip up DVD player, I've always wanted one and I have the extra cash.

Then onto exhaust.

Just got the deck in and it works great, I'm very happy with it so far. The e-brake wire was giving me trouble with no video playing so I wired it up to a switch and grounded it, one flick of the switch and the video works after its first turned on.

Thanks. I think they have a navigation setup for this model, I don't think its built in. Overall I'd recommend it, but the thing I was hoping for was a customizable wallpaper, I'd do something up in photoshop with a 'Bird logo and a few pictures of the car.

Now I just need an iPod with over 4 gbs of space, and the "36/103" is just my playlist for funk, It's titled "The Whole Funk", sadly it doesn't show up on the screen only "My Music" does.

Check craigslist for i pods.  Picked up a 160gig for 150 what a deal. Have you reset the i pod by pushing top of click wheel and center button until you see the apple sign.  If that does not work then you need to organize your itunes.  Does the headunit play video thru the ipod also?

I've been looking on Kijiji for a few days waiting for a cheap one to pop up but thanks for the tip. I'll try resetting the iPod but it works fine with the deck, as for video I don't have any movies on my iPod but I'm assuming it would work as there's a little film button on the deck's screen.

That's cool man. I use to have a pioneer with the usb jack, used a power converter and used a external hard drive with the screen for movies and music.

So I took out the battery today to boost the forklift at work (of all things). After I put the battery back in the car I get my password screen for the deck, entered the password wrong 3 times.. And it locks me out... I've been trying to get it to work but it really hates me; I might have to send it back to Clarion which really blows.

In other news I have my audio system planned out and I'm sticking to it.

Alpine 4 channel for the doors and rear.
Alpine mono amp (1000 rms) for the subs.
3 Alpine Type E's 10".
2 sets of tweeters ran off deck power or my Kaption amp as its still new and will match the Alpines nicely.
Amp rack in the trunk angled towards the rear.

Now I just have to get everything.

Not much else to report on, other than a front end squeek which I'm guessing is the wheel bearings.

I installed the Alpine MRP-F300 tonight and man this thing is loud now, loud but clear. And I might be buying some Ponys with fat tires on them :D, for the summer of course. I also lined up some winter tires for my 10 holes if I ever drive in the winter with this car again. Also installed a Clarion BLT370 which is a bluetooth connector thing-y for my head unit, it mutes the music when a call comes in and starts right back up after the call is done, also streams music from my phone to the stereo. It was a good investment as a new $380 fine for talking on your cell phone whilst driving just came into affect.

Pony's and headers!

Tires are 225/50/16 for the fronts and 255/50/16 for the rear. They're almost bald but I'll get a summer out of them, clear coats starting to go on a few of the rims and only one has about 4" of curb rash.

Headers are from the junkyard, I had them sand blasted and painted them with VHT 2000 degree header paint. The exhaust should be done within a month or two. Thinking of 2.5", H pipe (cheap), Warlock lers and a Mustang mandrel bent kit for the rear.

Still looking for a T.C. hood...

I'm so-so with the colour of the interior, it grows on you after a while. And thanks but I still refer to it as my "piece of shiznit".

That would look sharp. I'd like white pipping to go with it too.

The Pony wheels look good on your Bird. However it would annoy me to have the Mustang emblems on the center caps. I have seen these styles wheels available new with smooth center caps.

Thanks but I need tires really badly. The Pony emblems bothered me a little at first and then I had a guy at work grill me about them cause he's 'Stang shaged and how they didn't belong on my "Cougar".. I told him everyone and their mother has a 'Stang and how his '65 is a secretary's car lol. :flip:

I took a trip to the audio shop today and was quoted over $2300 for 3 subs and an amp. Wow. Sounds bad but the amp is 2400w RMS and the 3 Alpine Type X are rated at 1000w RMS each.

So I decided to wait on the stereo and just get some type Rs and a 1000w RMS amp instead. I need tires and an exhaust sooner than a louder stereo.

Not much new, I fixed my intake leak, cleaned up under the hood and put two dress ups on. I never did get my exhaust done as I bought a truck for a winter beater/fishing truck, pics of that to follow. Here's a few of my Bird and Cougar together.

And a few of the motor.

Pic of the J.D. bottle again. This car will never be driven in the winter again and stored in doors when it does snow.

Pics of said truck:

Plans are 3" body lift, 31" tires, install my roll bar, 4 100w off road lights, flat black all around, some interior touches and drive it 'til it falls apart. I know its a Chevy but it doesn't leak or burn oil and it's in decent shape.

So I still have that truck but I didn't lift it or anything like that, I'm lowering it this summer. Here's a pic of it now.

But for the car, it's been at my dad's shop for the last 6 months or so. I pulled the front end of the motor off to clean it up and add a few things, here's a small list:

Flex fan, headers, dress up peices, valve covers, wire loom, just general dress up. Also did the rear shocks. I'm going to get the rest of the motor buttoned up this weekend so I can finally get my exhaust done 2 weeks from now, custom bent 2 1/2" full length, lers will probably be Flow 40's, tires to follow after that and then I can drive it for the summer.

Pic's of the car.

This was the dead of winter, so I had to buy a sled.

Got it stuck the day I put it away for the winter.

And here's the last set of goodies to go on before it gets driven:

Next winter I'd really like to pull the motor and do a mild build on it, transmission rebuild and funds permitting 8.8 out of a TC. I'll be sure to post pics of the exhaust when its done.
