i need to add oil to my c5 trans and looked up in haynes manual to find that i need to put type H fluid i went to the store and it appears there is none, i also cheked on motomaster.com and they dont seem to have type H fluid is it discontinued or what and if so what can i put in my c5 thanks everyone
You won't find it. they say you can use mercon or mercon V.
Dexron II = Type H. I don't know if you can still find Dexron II, but Dexron III or IV should work. DON'T use Dexron V!
Here's a link about trans fluid. don't know how reliable it is.
http://www.aa1car.com/library/atf.htm
From the 84 shop manual:
C3 and AOD use Dexron II
C5 use type H.
"The fluid used in C5 A/T contains a detergent that retains particles in suspension that are generated during normal transmission use."
You are right, Type H is no longer available. Mercon replaces it.
and mercon is discontinued according to this http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/fulltext/show_article.php?tsb=07-1-7 and its replaced by mercon V?
wich one to use softtouch?
I posted the info from the shop manual incase someone was curious about the difference between Dexron II and Type H.
I would use Dexron II, Mercon or Mercon V.
But I'm no trans expert. If they say one replaces the other, I believe them.
i just use type f transmission fluid it works too.
i use water in mine. lol:mullet:
john deer ftw.
it hasnt been available around here for some time. i use dexron-III since its cheap, i dont like the way the car shifts cold from it though(too snappy for my taste)
I use fresh carrion blood.
then this should be fine i guess Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF is approved for mercon v
also can i just add it to whats in the tranny already or 2 different brands of oil cant mix wich i doubt
Type f usually provides the snappiest shifts but Mercon will work fine.Mercon V i a synthetic i believe and a no-no in a used unit.
too late its in car shifts great, smooter at times
Generally changing to a synthetic fluid is an at your own risk proposition in a used unit. Not that the fluid is bad,But what it can do to an old trans is the issue.
Hope it works well for you!:D
Fluids are different only due to the types of materials the internal clutches and bands are made up of. The Dextron III replaced all the different types of fluid. In the 80's and early 90's it was a s shoot trying to find your fluid on the shelf of any given parts store. There were like 6 or 7 types of tranny fluid until the dextron/mercon III reared it's ugly head and made everything shift like grandma's caprice. Type F makes trannys shift really hard for just a fluid change, it's basically the same make up as the B&M trick shift tranny fluid......
