Title: 4.6
Post by: RunninWild on April 23, 2009, 12:27:12 AM
Has anybody on this website put an sn-95 4.6 motor in their car?

I know a lot of people here put 5.0's in their cars, but I know a place with a shiznitton of 4.6's...rather cheap, I think for the entire motor assembly, 600-ish bucks.

worth considering? Would this require incredibly extensive work? Or would it be more cost efficient to find an old 5.0and throw that in there?

I would say that a 5.0 would be simpler because the car with them in the 80s.

Are we talking a SOHC 4.6? If so screw it put in a 5.0. The SOHC 4.6 is a turd. A 5.0 HO is a much better engine for making power. Now if we're talking a DOHC 4.6 then yeah go for it ;)

Not all of those Sohc 4.6 are turds. Need to find the 97 and newer version. much better intake and heads.

Even with the PI 4.6 SOHC it's still hard to get much more than 300 hp without some kind of forced induction. A 5.0 will do 300+ hp NA easy. With all that's involved with a 4.6 swap it would be better to spend the money on a DOHC engine ;)

4V would be the only way I would swap a 4.6 in my car.

What's the differeence between the SOHC and DOHC? I know that DOHC=Dual overhead cam and SOHC= single overhead cam, but how is DOHC better? Better able to handle more power?

Yep, they are but they can and do fit. At least they do in a SN95/new edge and even easier into a S197

You can get the Mark VIII engine cheap. Don't need the LSC as the added HP came from the exhaust. Engine is the same as the non LSC cars. Its not an easy swap though. 5 speed would be cheap and easy but you can snag a T56 for a reasonable price. Picked mine up for 1300 complete with 14K miles on it.

shame, will an edelbrock carb intake fit the DOHC engine?

yes, lowers are made for the modular engines for use with carbs. you then either have to rig up a DIS or make/buy a distributer conversion (kind of "meh" but they work).

The only Edelbrock intakes I've seen is for the 2Vs. Sullivan has then for 4Vs but only for 99 and up. Still haven't released one for the B" heads yet. KarKraft also has adaptors  that fit the 99+ heads as well. MSD has an igniton setup that uses C.O.Ps with the crank and cam position sensors for right around $400.
