Title: New Laptop -- JUNK!!!
Post by: V8Demon on February 05, 2009, 11:51:16 AM
WTF is going on this month?!!!!!

If a credit card company isn't trying to shaft me, an appliance I own is breaking!!!

I haven't been using my conventional computer as of late due to the purchase of a new laptop.  Well, I went to start it up this morning and it won't boot.  Diagnostic tests reveal a "hardware malfunction" that Iwill have to "contact the manufacturer about."

5 weeks.... 5 FVCKING WEEKS OLD

Unreal.....

I just had to sell a 2.5 year old VAIO for parts only got $150 for it and I paid freaking $1550 for it. I just pre-ordered a little asus 1000HE netbook for $400. Never again will I spend over $500 on a computer...

At least you can return yours :)

Brand new  Toshiba model L305d-s5893.  Purchased in mid-December.  Opened it up in late December -- as in removed it from it's packaging, no tinkering, lol.

It won't even prompt to let me wipeout the hard drive.  Wife has receipt in her pocketbook.  She said she wanted to hold onto it for a bit just to make sure....Good call on her part.

Oh you're in for some fun with their tech support bunch... I almost had to threaten to sue to get the system restore discs for mine. :punchballs:

I'm going to bet the store you bought it from isn't going to want to take it back either... don't envy you at all, nope, nope, nope.  :D

Got it from Best Buy.  Considering some of the other purchases I've made there over the past couple of years, they'd better make good...

I had a brand new Dell laptop quit working on me the day it arrived (no backlighting in the screen). Dell went good on it though, sending me another laptop within two days.

Sucks you're having problems, but at least you didn't buy it from Circuit City. I can only imagine how easy it'd be to deal with their returns department right now...

I'm having a bad laptop day myself :(

New Dell M2400 (work) becomes unresponsive when exploring CD ROM. I got the updates from Dell that supposedly fix the issue - nope - still have to hold the power button to kill the machine :(

I just figured out that if I open Adobe Reader after using Cadence, Cadence cannot be used afterwards without crashing-and-burning.

I had to carry my P1610 to the car this afternoon because it took 11 minutes to shut-down even after I closed all applications!! WTF? I had to grab it and run out to the car with it since my daughter had an eye doctor appointment. Of course, they told us the doctor was running an hour late when we got there - grrrr!

My co-worker was just telling me about his ordeal with Circuit City today...not with the company itself, but with his extended warranty through CC. His 2-year-old TV needs an expensive part and the warranty company tried to just buy him out of his 1 year left of service, and not warrant the repair. That would leave him stuck with a non-working TV and only $500. He had to get his lawyer involved...suddenly the company changed its tune and will give him $2K credit towards a new TV (still will be stuck with the old TV, but two grand is two grand).

So yeah, even the extended warranty through Circuit City is teh suckness.

The sad part is, he found out his extended warranty on his car is through the same company...

That's why I've never bought the EXTENDED warantees on anything.  The standard store warantee suffices on most electronics and appliances.

BTW Curcuit City filed chapter 5 bankruptcy....
They're liquidating everything so that story is of no surprise.  Chapter 5 actually puts a group of people who represent the creditors who are owed money in charge of the liquidation....It's all about profit now...

I have a toshiba laptop my wife got before she decided not to go to college. I have used it everyday for nearly 2 years, and never had a problem. If they won't straight up give you a new one, I would call toshiba. Just cause you bought it at best buy, dosen't mean you have to deal with them.

I went there looking for a printer cable cause my old one (Dot Matrix old...) was broken. They told me if I bought the $75 gold plated one, I would never need another. I told them the old one lasted for $20 years, and I'd take my chance.

My wife neglected to tell me that she DOES in fact have the Recovery Disks -- she hid them in a drawer

I pull them out and put them to use :punchballs:

I get "Hard Drive Deletion Error" on the option that leaves the partitions in place.....Did it twice just to make sure....

Just started the process that gets rid of the partitions as well.....

17 hours to go.....

Seriously how the heck does a computer fail to delete?
I shoulda snapped off a pic of the screen and made a de-motivational poster out of it....

Luckily I've had no trouble with my laptops.  My old Dell Inspiron 1200, which was a 1.3GHz Celeron M 256MB ram and 30gb hdd with 14" screen cheapie I bought in Fall 2005, has been quite a dependable machine.  I swapped out the Celeron for a 1.4GHz Banias Pentium M for better battery life and cooler operating temps, and added another 256mb of ram for a total of 512mb.  I think I gave $450 for it when new, and with upgrades, I have $475 in it (or so).
My wife's Acer Aspire was a Walmart special purchased back in November 2007 for $350.  It has been "okay" in terms of reliability, mainly just intermittent glitches associated with the onboard mouse pad locking up that may or may not be a Windows Vista driver issue.  Oh, and Vista, ya, I don't care for it, but meh, it's the wife's computer.  If it works for her, I'm okay with it.  Anyway, it was a Celeron M 1.73GHz 1GB ram 80GB hdd 15.4" widescreen and Vista Home basic.  I swapped out the Celeron CPU for a 1.46 GHz Pentium Dual Core, and added an SD card reader in its media slot.  In total I have about $400 in the laptop.  It's a nice desktop replacement for my wife, but I do enjoy the smaller size of my 14" Dell, as I do travel quite a bit with it.

A friend of mine has an HP Pavilion laptop, an older unit from around 2005, that stopped working last summer.  I was given the task of fixing it, and once I tore the entire thing apart, I noticed the voltage regulator for the DC input on the motherboard was burnt up, so I soldered in a new, upgraded voltage regulator for him.  It was a 70 cent part that cost $6 to ship, and saved him $100 as he didn't have a buy a replacement motherboard, or brick a laptop that would otherwise be worth about $200-$250.  And to think, Geek squad wanted $100 just to look at it.  I think he ended up paying me back with steak and beer at his place.

I should mention....The partition delete failed as well.  Going to attempt a swap for a new laptop on Monday...

Although I'm sure they'll want me to send mine out for repair....

sounds like the hard drive failure. I would try to get them to let you replace it. Best Buy should be able to do it there if there an authorized service center. You shouldn't have to pay anything as well.

Ok, now I got caught up. the laptop starts but the OS won't load.
Could be hard drive or the controller portion of the logic board.
If the drive clicks and sounds like its searching, the drive heads crashed on it or parked. common for laptops.
If no drive sound at all....HD controller
