For future referance, does any body know what drive shafts cross over to our cars. Just asking incase someone is thinking about installing a aluminum Mustang drive shaft and then finds out its to short.

I don't know about your ?, but an interesting observation...when I swapped my tranny (busted AOD for another AOD0, I needed to get the driveshaft shortened because, for some reason, the tail section of the rebuilt tranny was longer. I have NO idea what car it came from, but my uncle suggested that a floor shift car had a different length tail section (dunno why, just an idea). the trannys were otherwise identical, except for the cooler line fittings
Nope. It probably came from a Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, or Town Car. They have a longer tailshaft. I think the Lincoln Mark7's do also. Or is it just the Town Cars? But no, shifter style has nothing to do with the length of the tail shaft.
k if it came from one of those cars, do they have different gearing than other AODs? cuz for some reason my car runs pretty high revs @ highway speeds and I don't know why

The Mustang, Cougar, T-Bird, Crown Vic and Grand Marquis all have the shorter-length AOD (floor shift or column shift). The Mark VII has the longer tailshaft and was always floor shift. I know all of this because in one summer, I had 5 AOD's in my car: stock Cougar column shift; Mustang floor shift (toasted); Mark VII (toasted); Crown Vic converted to floor shift (fine until it toasted), and finally a good Mark VII (still in there). I had to get the driveshaft re-tubed for the Mark VII AOD but kept the stock length for the others.
No matter how long of a tailshaft you have on your trans, you will not get a Mustang aluminum driveshaft to work...it will still be too short. This is because of the difference in our wheelbase lengths. A few people on the board have used shortened aluminum Aerostar driveshafts. We have no direct-fit, magical solution unfortunately.
how about a 93 mark viii driveshaft? can those be shortened?
I seem to remember somebody had a Police Interceptor driveshaft shortened to fit his car as well. Was it T5 Bird?
if you mean you think I'm still in 3rd, no it shifts into 4th. with the shift kit you definitely feel every shift (and no, it isn't just the converter locking)
I picked one up from a crown vic for 75$ And had it cut down for 75$
So It was only 150$ total.
I an not sure but I think all crown vics had aluminum drive shafts.

Yea I had to call around to find a shop that would even do an aluminum shaft. Not so common I guess
I'm glad this subject came up.I have an aluminum driveshaft from a Crown Vic police cruiser out in the garage.I new it was to long,and,like others,I put a different tranny in my 'Bird ( from a pickup),and had to shorten a drive shaft.I kept the original just in case.
Hey perfect timing :) I'm ordering an alum driveshaft from www.dennysdriveshaft.com (http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com) I just got off the phone with Daniel to go over some of the measuring I need to do. I'll be ordering tomorrow or Thursday depending how long it takes me to fill out this measuring sheet so I'll let you guys know how much. I think the total will be around ~$375 and about a 3 week wait cause it's their busy time (wish I ordered over the winter :( )
I'll let you guys know How I like it when it comes in. If it gets rid of my 78+ mph vibrations I'll be happy :grinno:
