Post by: Samantha on January 12, 2009, 01:48:47 PM
This is the updated bad news thread. I will post pictures of the rebuilding of my car on this thread.

Here are the pictures of my new soon to be front end that I received today:

Post by: Samantha on January 15, 2009, 09:11:07 AM
Today I'm going to try and remove the like 13 inches of snow from my poor car and the replacement front end and get her towed some where she can be inside!  Aka the body shop! Hopefully there won't be too much other stuff that I don't know that's wrong and it will be done in a couple of weeks! I'm going to use as many of the original parts from my car as I can. Headlights most likely will be the original ones and not from the replacement. Ill keep everyone posted with pictures etc..!

Update!

Went up to the place yesterday and signed the papers allowing them to fix my car. Its gunna be 2466 for paint body work and frame work. So everything basically.
My car will be finished in about a week or two. Now that's left is the inspection since there is a salvage title on it! And then ill be back to driving her around!

hey just remember that ohio needs vin# on the reciept from the donor car or they'll fail the inspection i've gone through it alot done 6 or 7 of them but got failed twice cause didnt have reciept with vin# on on car and didnt have reciept on a new part on anouther and make sure who ever gets the inspetion reciept from the DMV has to be there with the car and the car owner thats how they had me do it. and they do a background check on all parties there. not that there would be an issue. i had a speeding ticket when i was 18that the clerk of courts missed filed and the had a warrant for me short ride to the court house they found the mistake let me go no biggie but scared the  out of my wife :rollin: can laugh bout it now but hope the cougar turns out better than new

No they are just painting the new fender and bumper. I wish though. It needs a lot of body/frame work which is what is costing a bunch.

I do have the receipt of all the parts so that should cover for inspection.

I dont get it,, people wanting the total package with zero defects and thinking it should aways be cheap.

I tried to explain it here post 89,  http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=22019&page=9  but i guess it makes no sense to anyone.

There is a lot of body work and frame work that is also included in that 2466 so its not just the paint!!! I supply him with parts and he does his job by painting them realign my frame and weld/ bolt things back on such as the fender bumper and the bumper skin header panel etc. A lot of hours are being put in which if why its not too cheap.

i'm with you.
anybody that has done body work! knows that it takes time to  all the little things to get right and that time is money when you have shop to run.

Samantha just remember you get what you pay for and there alwise people that  think that no matter what you do. that the price is to high.
from what i can see you are getting a good price for all the work that has to be done.
Title: Update on my 88 xr7.
Post by: shame302 on January 22, 2009, 12:57:43 AM
yeah, thats pretty "on". a front clip plus labor and air bags on my car were going to be 8600 bucks. she did the right thing securing parts her self. body work is expensive period. someone took the time to become a tradesman and earned it.

As for the cost of body work and paint. It is just a matter of fact, you get what you pay for. Even if you did it yourself.

i have a collision shop and work by myself. poeple dont
mind making all they can for themselves but seem to think
no one else should. we are told what we pay for our jobs
we do for insurance companies and paint and material is
very high.we are locked in to the prices our jobbers charge us.
you cant use the cheap stuff if you want it to last and
provide a warranty. judging by the damage i saw sam is getting
a pretty good price. cant wait to see it done and back to
being a happy camper[and driver] again.--irv

that is a good price, especially to have the frame fix properly.  And also to have a rust free Cougar back on the road rather then in the s yard....

Thanks everyone! It is a little out of what I wanted to spend but I mean what are you to do! I want the car fixed so its worth it. Actually about the rust thing...my dad found rust under the mud flap on the driver side fender but that is the fender getting replaced :D. So that's a good thing. I can't wait to get my car back and running!

All the frame work is pretty much done.
They are painting the new parts then putting it back on.
The pinstripes are going to be a little different because they cannot buy new they have to duplicate.
The air conditioning is broken and I would have to put a whole new system in because mineis not eco friendly so i will deal without.

I have a fluid container. $5.

Whole new system? I would think it would just be the condenser that is damaged. You can convert to 134a with everything else you already have. I have a condenser too but Im putting it on my car.... someday.

It's nice to see another Cougar restored. Yours is about the only cougar I've ever seen that looks exactly like mine. I even have the same original wheels in my American Racing wheel boxes. Do you have any interior pics? I'd like to see if it looks like my cougar. Good luck with the restoration & hopefully everything will workout.

Thats not correct, and its honestly sounding like a feeler to see how interested you are in getting a new HVAC system.  You can still get replacement parts and,,,, get your existing system charged up with r134 at the very least.

Car looks great so far, frame work looks like it went pretty simple.  It wasnt as bad as you thought was it?

You wont know exactly how good of a tweeking job they did until body parts go on and you notice stacks of shims here and there.

A full repaint, with rust and ding repair for me was $4608 (and it took five months!). Now, that was with two coats of primer and sandings in between so it all depends. Considering that this requires frame work, I'd say it's not bad, but for that price I would expect a first-rate paint job.

Are they painting the whole car or just the parts being installed/I'd worry about trying to match 20 year old paint.I just don't think it can happen. It can be close, but not a match.
Title: Update on my 88 xr7.
Post by: Samantha on January 28, 2009, 09:36:21 AM
They said the paint can be matched so i guess we will wait and see.
On the ac part they said its not eco friendly and I'm already spending over 3 grand and I will be a full time college girl in two weeks and I just took out a 10grand loan that has to be paid off!
so I can live without the ac for a while.
I have a bottle its being shipped now and I will have them put it on before they put the new fender on so its easier.
And the body work better be done right because if its not and i go get my inspection they will tear it apart all over again and lets just say york auto will be hearing from me adn doing my car over.
Actually to tell you guys the truth when my dad was looking at it underneath the drivers side fender ther was some rust. but hey thats the one thats getting replaced!!!

My GF says the same thing. I just go faster and I cant hear the complaints over the exhaust.

Now that Im driving the SHO I figured I was set. What would there be to complain about right? WRONG. I drive to fast, leather is cold (she has leather in her Durango WTF), smells like gas, cup holders suck (atleast there are some), its ugly, too bad its not loud like the Cougar. Then I wouldn't hear half of all that, but it would be one more complaint.

I like them both so she can keep talking, and Ill keep not listening. Sounds like your BF already knows the rule for happiness.

His time, his talent, his tools all going to work just for you in a 40hour week at 50$ an hour shop rate assuming that is the shop rate.  If thats the case, he made you a  good deal.  Will he have a helper?  Maybe he will and maybe he wont but still, that hourly rate puts two men on one car with all the labor burden on the shop not to mention the liability and risking his reputation as a shop owner.

Woman up and understand this is just the price you pay for services.  If you want it done cheap, use ducktape, bondo and super glue and spraypaint.

Id suggest you and your dad take the front end parts off and let him focus on frame shaping and pulling right off the bat.  His time spend on mundain tasks like bolt on items is a huge waste of your hard earned money.  the quicker he is able to get to the meat of the matter , the quicker he can get your car fixed.

sorry, just had to say that because there are many people who forget how much it really costs to do a job and do it right and still maintain a good buisness relationship by word of mouth.

just remeber one thing,,, just because you dont like a dollar figure does not make it incorrect.  It may be out of your budget but nevertheless, it does not mean the individual is not due his or her valued service.

Do I think I would pay 2grand for the service? Nope because i can do all that myself.  If you cant, then pay someone else who can.

Well,, cant say I didnt see this coming. I predicted it way back on your other thread.  Like i said before, your kind of thinking is one root cause of why our country is in the shape it is in now.  A bunch of spoiled kids / adults wanting something for nothing.  Your request is simple,, you want the stars but you want to pay in dust.  You asked for help, you got it.  You desired a good price,, and for the sake of the working folks you got a GREAT DEAL!!.  In the end, you plan to pin them to the wall when everyone bent over backwards to make you happy.  You sound spoiled and inmature making comments like that.  I simply think you need educated in simple math and what time is worth.  Your sig says something about cosmetics or whatever so if your plan is to run your own shop,, remember your kind of mind will be greeting you at the counter "wanting something for nothing",,,,,,,,,and thier checks for free.

Life aint no BOGO so stop treating this like it is.

Samantha,

All he's doing is pointing out some contradicting statements you made. He probably made some incorrect assumptions, which should not be ignored. But this is some serious repair we're talking here, and any kind of bodywork is mega-bucks. You definitely got a good deal, and in terms of "making sure it's done right" so far the pictures look good, and that's up to you and your father to make sure you find a reputable shop, not a sketchy one.

I have some rust in the rear lower quarter of my car, and relative to the size of it it seems awfully small. I'll probably be looking at $800-$1k worth of work, talking to people I know who know what that goes for around here. It is definitely a chunk of change, but bodywork is a big deal. I'm right where you are, not *exactly* but I too am a college student, and I'm trying to preserve/repair an old car. Not exactly practical!

Just try and go easy on this York Auto alright? ;)  :) As it's been said, that shop is EXTREMELY clean looking. That says a lot, they probably take a lot of pride in their work, and are very very skilled. That stuff is an art form.

all im saying is that if my car isnt done right after i pay for it its gunna be fixed. I dont care who you are. you get paid to do your job do it right the first time
because i know at my job if i dont cut your hair right i get in trouble. and that hair grows back!
cars dont just get better with time.
Noone is gunna push me around.
Im an adult now and I have to take care of myself.
I have better things to do then play games with the place if they dont do it right the first time.
I dont have time to play games.
thanks for the people who actually care.
and for you jcassity you dont know everything  and neither does anyone. and dont make assumptions.
im not one to mess with because im not dealing with your shiznit.

yeah, i really dont mean any offense but this whole post is just like a "momma" that flaunts the fact that "I take care of MY baby" etc.

your supposed to. your supposed to pay your own bills. your supposed to pay for your own stuff. your supposed to pay back those loans. its expected.

Jcassidy's was pretty much on target imo. today everyone wants everything for nothing. this generation feeling of "entitlement" and lack of accountability is just sickening.

i agree. you car should be repaired correctly and with in reason but perfection in a 20 year old car isn't likely and its not the shops fault.

Looks like some fiiiine work. Looks gorgeous. I actually think the gray grille is good. I need to get the correct red grille for mine because I have the black trim but since yours has so much "red going on" up front at least IMO it works pretty good. That front-view pic just looks "right". Easy enough to paint it though if you want so no biggie there anyway.

Hey,that's awesome. The pin stripes are great.I'm proud for you.Whoever did the stripes did a nice job.Did they ask you how you wanted them,or just applied them as they saw fit?Either way, nice.

No that's how it was originally with the pinstripes. My car always had pinstripes but when they painted the car they had to put them on becaue the rest of the car had them! Lol

Looks great :D  I guess the paint mis-match was because they didn't wash the rest of the car. Be thankful the car doesn't have metalic paint as it is near impossible to get the re-spray to match the paint on the car.

BTW what is that black stuff all over the inner fenders? Some kind of undercoat?

As much as I like the 4 eyes over the 87-88s I really like your car. I think it is because it reminds me of how clean my car was when I bought it... I miss those days.

Paint looks great. I was a little worried about the paint myself but it looks amazing. I would clay bar and buff the  out of the old paint. In the long run the old paint will fade before the new stuff. I dont think you will have to worry about it too much since you do a great job keeping it up.

Where are you going to school?

Yeah I'm worried about the paint. I'm going to the Cleveland institute of medical massage in middleburg hts which is like 20 minutes from where I live.

Thats what I was wondering. Alot of people let there car go when they go away to school because it isnt as easy to clean up when you live in a closet and park in a lot

Yeah same here. Its like a 20-30 min drive depending on the day an time and me. Its nice to not have to be home all week but be close enough to have the option of goin home if needed. It would be even better if I could have girls in my dorm....

Yeah... Now if we get caught we get the automatic boot and both the girl and us get charged with trespassing. Doesnt make sense but neither does the no girl rule so screw it.

Been a month an a half for me.

I JUST pulled the Cougar out like 10 mins ago. Dropped in my overpriced battery and it started like any other day. I loved hearing that sound. Crawled out from under the carport (I am going to make an apology trip tomorrow to the neighbors, well the non-jackass ones)
and I felt back at home...

I tell you what though, things have changed after driving the SHO. Its alot louder and a hell of a lot slower:punchballs: ... But dependable.

I think I kinda know how you feel now. After driving this car for 3 years I just dont feel the same in other cars. Loved the SHO but it wasnt my Cougar.
