Title: Anyone ever posted on ebay?
Post by: jpc647 on December 03, 2008, 08:19:06 PM
I'm considering selling a car on ebay but don't know how it works. I was told if it doesn't sell I don't pay a fee. If the car does sell how much of a fee is there? Can I put a reserve on it, have it not sell and still not have to pay a fee?

I dunno if it changed, but when I was trying to sell my Volvo I briefly considered it. I say "briefly", because when I looked at the fees I puked. It was somewhere around $40 for a listing fee, plus a fixed "sale fee" of over $200 if the car so much as received a bid. Doesn't matter if the buyer actually buys it, you're stuck with the fee (and with eBay's new "Buyer can get away with anything" policies you're almost guaranteed to have non paying bidders).

You're FAR better off going with Craigslist, Kijiji (both free) or Auto Trader. That way you don't get nailed with a $200 fee every time somebody says they'll buy it but doesn't follow through.

It kills me that nobody has bought your car yet man. i wish i could fit it in my life. craigslist isnt too bad with the ecception that its a pain sometimes to list it in several areas. auto trader and even the want advertiser are all at least worth a try before listing it on evilbay.

yes i have sold some stuff one EBAY.
 my ebayer name is rancheronut.
when listing a car/truck/whatever. they charge you fee  just like your local new papers do. the only different is you local paper is that- local. where ebay is "world wide".
if it dont sell, yes you will still pay there fee but if it dont sell and you relist it and then it sells. ebay normal don't charge you a relisting free.

as for ebay or Craigslist, Kijiji  or Auto Trader.    you still have low lifes that say they will pay and don't!  on my ebay when i have nonpayer ,i just relist it .  really how hard is that? when the nonpayer bid $200.00 on it.i told ebay of nonpayment and i relisted ,then it sold for$400.00. so tell me how the nonpayer hurt me???????
i have been a ebayer from 2001 , i only had two bad buyers and only one off those was a nonpayer.the other one was a guy that didn't understand " this is for usa and canada sales only"

Au Contraire.

I too sell on eBay, and have been doing so since 1999. On normal (non vehicle) listings eBay does not charge a relisting fee on an item if it doesn't sell... BUT, and this is a big BUT: In the case of a non paying bidder you have to report the buyer to get your listing fees back. With eBay's new feedback policy reporting a non-paying bidder is tantamount to suicide (as soon as eBay notifies them that they've been reported they can leave you a negative feedback and there's not a ed thing you can do about it).

Plus, although eBay will waive your "listing" fee (currently 35 cents for the items I sell), they will NOT waive your "Final value" fee. You have to pay that regardless whether the buyer actually pays you or not. The final value fee on the $65-$80 items I sell is $9. Every non paying buyer would cost me $9, plus would have the option of leaving me negative feedback with no fear of retribution. So I risk a negative feedback and get my listing fees refunded: A whopping thirty-five cents. eBay keeps the $9. This is why I made all of my listings "Immediate payment required".

All of this is moot, though, because it is for non-vehicle listings. Vehicle listings are even worse. Apparently eBay has changed from when I was considering selling my Volvo, but not much of a  change: Now the listing is free, but the first bid will cost you $125, whether or not the bidder actually follows through with the deal.

eBay's automobile listing fee schedule:

Pay particular attention to this section (I've underlined the important parts):

In other words, every tire kicker you get will cost you $125. Somebody wins your auction, doesn't show up, and you're down $125. You re-list for free, but somebody else does the same thing, and you're down another $125. You re-list again, somebody actually shows up and looks at the car, but decides they don't want it. There goes another $125. These fees are non-refundable - the moment you get your first bid you owe eBay $125.

Again, listing vehicles is different than listing just about anything else (although as I mentioned above, even non-vehicle listings cost you if you get a non-paying bidder - ~$9 per non paying bidder in the case of my $65-$80 listings). Yes, Craigslist and Auto Trader can be annoying, with the fraudsters and people promising they'll be there in an hour to buy the car, only to never show up. The difference is these people are only an annoyance. On eBay these lowlifes will each cost you $125.

Another thing to remember: eBay may be global, but unless you've got a one-of-three '63 Tempest Super Duty or something, most people are not going to travel more than a few hundred miles to buy a car. Yes, somebody in Bangor, ME can see listings in Portland, OR, but is that person going to travel across the continent? Not likely.

A couple people on the forum were "interested" but they just lowballed me. I'm sorry if I don't feel it is my responsibility to lower my price to cover peoples travel expenses.

ok,so i take it you HAVEN'T SOLD a car on ebay!  WELL I have sold just you average cars/ trucks on ebay
THE 1973 ranchero. it SOLD to somene in FL.
THE 1980 fairmount  that was  SOLD to someone in detroit.
THE 1974VW bug  that was  SOLD to someone in maine.
THE 1973 mustang that  SOLD to some one in lived in TX but was station in IRAQ.
the 1986 mercy capri 5.0 that sold to some one in canada.
these was just your average  street cars, that where daily drivers . that look ok 20 feet away, not show cars.
I LIVE IN MONTANA.  so i figure they went over 1700 miles away from me, and i didn't didn't pay a dime for there shipping.
try that with you so called Craigslist, Kijiji (both free) or Auto Trader.
last time i tried one of them. i had to WAIT around  house on my day off most of a day for people calling up saying there where on there way. i don't know about your world but waisted time is money for me and i glady pay your so called $125 fee and have some way to make sure that person follow through. than sit for people that call  to tell you there on there way and  be no show and have no way at all to do anything about it.or better yet! we had one guy that called and it took him over hour to drive across town(which is only 5 miles ). then took it for a test drive for 5-1/2 hours (which i had to wait around for him to come back)!    when he came back, i ask what happen ? all he said "oh i didn't know there was a test limit." after he left, i check the truck out. now the nice clean box has dents/trash/marks in it. couple days later a  friend called  and was mad at me for not letting him know i was moving. when he seen my truck across town full of stuff plus had a 30 foot trailer hook to it full of moving stuff.
if somebody in Bangor, ME looking at my ride ,they don't waste your time to test drive!

as for the $125.00 The Successful Listing Fees on the First Four Listings in a 12-month period  and starting of Fifth Listing in a 12-month period that price gos down!!!!
is  fine with me because it saves me money instead of the old way, i was charge a listing free plus additional fee charged after the vehicle sells at a percentage of what they went for.
so  that means for people like me that don't sell junk and the more higher the sales price gos  UP ! the more ebay got paid. just  by charging me Successful Listing Fee  of $125 would have
save me about $195.00 on the bug,
save me $92.00 on the ranchero,
save me$110.00 on the fairmont,
AS FOR THE MUSTANG ,it would have save me over $300.00.

well i had only two things  of all the stuff i sold on ebay ,not sell after i relisted it and the last one cost me $80.00. for the same thing in my local new paper the owner of the product, listed it and cost him $93.00 just to have the local's look at it and half of my day  waiting around for no shows.....

as for relisting you forgot to show as per you own stuff above:

How does the free relist policy work?
Normally, insertion fees for listing your item are non-refundable. However, if your listing ends without a winning buyer or ends with an Unpaid Item, you can qualify for a credit. We’ll refund your insertion fee if you relist your item and it sells the second time.

well i like getting credit to relist than paying the full amount to relist in your local stuff!!!!!

sure abay not  perfect and is for every one ! there doing a service for you and want to be paid for. just like you would like to be paid  a pay check for what you do at work, right?
sure most people don't go past the city limits to buy a car/ truck/what ever but for the people that do know what there looking for  and don't mind paying a better price and figure out way to get it back to them.
i have bought cars and truck on ebay from FL/IN/CA . there was one i got from CA and i flew my son and i there. pick up the rig and drove it back home. along the way ,we stop see LEGO land/ walt disney/ see world/ PLUS a train ride in WA and a tower in seattle,WA .  i paid $2500.00 for that mercey capri.cost me $2,000 to drive it back in two week time. i had the  capri apprise when i got back  and i apprise out at $5990.00.  there was a local one  like mine in a use car lot sold for $6400.00.
the way i look at it is .i have a better chance selling on ebay than Craigslist, Kijiji or Auto Trader and i willing to pay extra money to make  more on the sale. i look at the glass(ebay) as half full instead of have empty, i guess.

i haven't sold a car since the new ways, but i used to require a deposit of somekind via paypal within 48 hours of the auction end..... i would make sure i listed it everywhere so they couldn't say they didn't see it and then send them an email about it right when the auction ended and then again the next day.....  if no paypal deposit was received (usually $300 or so) i sent a final warning with 1 hour left that it would be second chanced to the next person.....  i sold 4 cars and had no problems..... 1 person even drove from kansas city to detroit with a trailer to get one of them......  the deposit was always non refundable to cover my hastle if they reniged.....  i used a reserve twice, but it was met both times...

i actually bought the wife's cougar on ebay, she had a $1000 reserve and i was the high bidder when it ended at $800.... since it didn't meet the reserve, she sent me a note asking if i still wanted it, when i said yes, she used the second chance offer option and was able to lower the price after the auction ended so we could complete the transaction

now i've also heard some horror stories too, but i haven't experienced one

just don't sell to anyone from nigeria that will send you a money order to ship it and make it out for more for your troubles :)

No, I haven't sold a car on eBay. I've read hundreds of horror stories on the eBay message forums that made me think better of it (and 99% of those horror stories are about non paying bidders). If it's worth it to you to pay $125 every time somebody shows an interest in your cars, all the power to you. Myself, I'd rather keep the $125

No, they waste your time with 300 emails a day, asking stupid questions even though they have no intention of buying the car and then getting mad at you because you're not sitting right in front of the computer to answer them.

Look again. The successful listing fee goes down by $25, but the insertion fee goes up by $20. Your grand savings is $5 per vehicle. And you have to sell five cars to earn that five bucks.

as for relisting you forgot to show as per you own stuff above:

How does the free relist policy work?
Normally, insertion fees for listing your item are non-refundable. However, if your listing ends without a winning buyer or ends with an Unpaid Item, you can qualify for a credit. We’ll refund your insertion fee if you relist your item and it sells the second time.
The insertion fee credit for car listings are moot. There are no insertion fees, so there is nothing to refund. The "successful listing fee" is not an insertion fee. It is NOT REFUNDABLE. If somebody bids on your car and backs out you're out $125. If you relist you get no credit whatsoever. If somebody bids on your new listing you're out another $125, whether they pay or not. Simple as that.

As for non-automotive listings: Yes, the listing fees are refundable in the case of a non-paying bidder. Clever eBay recently changed their fee structure so that the listing fee for a sub $100 item is $0.35. They subsequently jacked up the final value fee (the non-refundable final value fee [FVF], I might add) to over 10% of the winning bid. It used to cost me about $6 to list and sell a sequencer (about half was listing fee, half was FVF). If somebody bought but didn't pay I could get half of that back (only the listing fee - FVF was NEVER refundable). Under the new structure I pay about $9.35 (0.35 being the listing fee, $9 being the FVF). If somebody doesn't pay now I can get thirty five cents back. eBay keeps $9. And I can't even leave the buyer a neg for not paying. Not only that, but since it's not worth risking a negative feedback myself for 35 cents, I can't even get the 35 cents. eBay keeps the whole $9.35. That's why I changed all my listings to "immediate payment required".

well i like getting credit to relist, than paying the full amount to relist in your local stuff!!!!!
As noted in my previous paragraph: There will be no credit to relist because you didn't pay anything to list in the first place. And Craigslist and Kijiji are both free (Kijiji is owned by eBay, by the way, and includes unlimited text and four photos).

sure abay not  perfect and is NOT for every one ! there doing a service for you and want to be paid for. just like you would like to be paid  a pay check for what you do at work, right?
sure most people don't go past the city limits to buy a car/ truck/what-ever but for the people that do know what there looking for  and don't mind paying a better price and figure out way to get it back to them, IT WORTH IT..
i have bought cars and truck on ebay TOO from state FL/IN/CA . there was one, i got from CA . i flew my son and i there. pick up the rig and drove it back home. along the way ,we stop see LEGO land/ walt disney/ see world/ PLUS a train ride in WA and a tower in seattle,WA .  i paid $2500.00 for that mercey capri.cost me $2,000 to drive it back in two week time. i had the  capri apprise when i got back  and i apprise out at $5990.00.  there was a local one  like mine in a use car lot sold for $6400.00.
the way i look at it is .i have a better chance selling on ebay than Craigslist, Kijiji or Auto Trader and i willing to pay extra money to make  more money on the sale. i look at the glass(ebay) as half full instead of have empty, i guess.

as for neg on feed back on ebay. sorry they have change that and are trying to make it better for the seller plus you can give bad feed back on nonpaying ebayer to help other ebayer know about them. try that with you local stuff

First: No, you cannot give bad feedback to a non paying bidder. You cannot give bad feedback at all. In fact, you can't even leave a positive that has negative undertones (if the buyer doesn't like the feedback you left for him he can complain to eBay, get it removed, and you'll have your listings cancelled for a policy violation).

I'm no stranger to eBay. I have sold over 3000 items, including approximately 1800 sequencer kits, and I've bought over a thousand items (including components to make sequencer kits). I browse the eBay forums and read the horror stories. I know how it works. Believe me, I look at eBay as not only "half full", but overflowing, given the money I've made using it. For non-vehicle sales it's the cat's ass (although the recent changes are starting to make it smell like a cat's ass). I stand by my original statement: Unless you are selling a really desirable vehicle that somebody is willing to travel for, eBay motors is not the best place (and is quite probably the worst place) to list your car.

Please allow me to add my perspective.  Craigslist has been really good for me.  I say go that route.  The Auto Trader and newspaper are good ones, too, though not as effective.  Most guys I work with don't have a computer sitting in front of them all day, but they do have a break time to read the paper or auto trader that's picked up at the store on their way to work.    Those that do have a computer in front of them all day are a crowd less likely to be buying older cars.  My .02
