you would be dead wrong.
i just got done trying 3 different sets of mustang seats..
all from fox's
first was a pair of recaros...no go at all.
second was a set of 86 gt seats...no go at all.
third was a pair of 93 leather/tweed seats...no go at all.
and NO, i wasnt using mustang brackets.
i unbolted the seats from the brackets, and tried using the cougar seat frame/brackets...none were even close to working.
I want to hear someone else jump in on this. It was a mod I have been planning for a while. I think we need more info.
um how hard would it be to modify the tracks to bolt up to the seat?
I had a set of gray tweed seats in my Blue Thunderbird.Bolted right in.There were a few holes on each corner of the bottom of the seat.I put the Bird's seat track to the seat, aligned it with the appropriate holes, and put the self tapping bolts in.Done.I also used a set in my red T-Bird a long time ago.Halo seats from an '86 Stang.I swapped on different headrests because the halos were too close to the roof of the car.A set from an Escort GT also worked.
Well gee...then I guess all the times I bolted Mustang seats into my cars I was dead wrong.
Recaros don't bolt into Mustangs w/o adapter brackets either. If you didn't have those at least, there was no way they were going to work.
Did your Cougar have a split bench or buckets to start with? Those might be different, but EVERY Tbird/Cougar I have had with buckets to start with accepted Mustang seats without even blinking.
It's not rocket science...
Hey CW it is rocket sience?
And the Cobra seats I got from you bolted into Eliminator without a hitch. I must be in the grave next to you.
They were originally in an '83 TBird when I had them ;)
FWIW, mustang seat tracks didnt fit my '88 either. i was told the seats would bolt to the t-bird's tracks, but stang tracks wouldnt bolt to the floor. i have a hacked up Holcomb seat bracket now. :(
I used a 4-cyl Mustang seat frame (reupholstered with the foam and cloth from an '87 Sport seat - the non console, non TC seat) in my '88. I used the Stang seat frame to cure the famous "Fox lean" and also to get rid of the consolette. Only thing I had to do to mount the T-Bird tracks to it was thread some of the already-drilled holes with the self-tapping bolts, same as Vinnie.
*EDIT* Come to think of it, I seem to remember having to thread the same two holes in my TC seats to install the manual racks when I put them in my car (they were originally power, my car has manual seats)
fwiw 88 turbo coupe seats fit in a 96 ranger.
i got '79 stang seats in my bird that was origionally a split bench. consolette car
i got a passenger side bird seat as my drivers seat in my mark 7
beat that
and its blue in my all red interior...
my car had buckets stock....
the recaros are factory mustang seats,no combo would make them work...
same with the 93 seats and the 86 seats...they were inches off,i would have had to make an extend adapter to bolt them to my power seat tracks...and even then...they sat way to high.
someone show me pics of mustang seats in a tbird/cougar.
My Sport's seats are identical to Stang "Sport" style seats, just the material that covers them is different. As a matter of fact,I'm going to order the black Stang seat covers for my car when I catch up with the projects already going on with it.The "Sport" seats as I am calling them are the same thing as what some would call the "Turbo Coupe" seats.

I cant tell you that all of these just bolted in, but I would bet they do with alittle bit of work.
its kinda funny I pulled up the same picture Eric. You don't mind do you?
Mustang seats (and dash) in a T-Bird:

gotta build thread with more pics on that tbird?
is that Booksix's car? If so, those are tc seats that were reupholstered.
I swapped tbird sports seats into my mustang. Just unbolted the seat tracks and put mustang tracks on the tbird seats.
I dont see why the swap wouldnt work the other way??
What did I say the first time around about the Recaros? NO RECARO WILL BOLT UP W/O ADAPTERS....PERIOD. Even in a Mustang adapter rails were used to get then to mate to the stock tracks. You have those adapters, they will bolt to the stock Ford seat rails.
On the Mustang seats, you were obviously loking at something crosseyed. I have installed Mustang seats in all of my Tbirds/Cougars at some point in time with power or manual tracks with NO mods at all.
Here's the seats outta mine, and I had to tap the 2 holes on the back of each seat's base to bolt on the Thunderbird brackets.
These came out of the ASC/McLaren Capri I had...
I guess it just depends on if your back holes are threaded.
(that sounds perverted, aye?)

If your back hole is threaded, you've been screwed. :hick:
the seats in my car i had to make a adapter plate for them to fit.(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii52/blackcougar84/motor/seats/PIC-0051.jpg)(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii52/blackcougar84/motor/seats/PIC-0050.jpg)
those are the same seats i have.
uhm.... ok then genius your not to far away from me,hows this sound.
you can take the FACTORY leather/tweed seats out of my 90s hatch lx,and try to bolt them up to the factory powerseat track in my 88 cougar.
ill pay for your gas...and give you 500 bucks if you can make it work with no cutting/fabbing,just a bolt on and go deal..funnier thing is,your coming into this conversation just asuming im like a newb at building vehicles...or that i am young.
the powerseat track in my cougar has no cut/weld marks...im fairly certain it has NOT been modified at all.
the front bolts will line up,the rear bolts however...are off by about an inch and a half
 This ought to get interesting...
It may be that the Mustang seats need holes drilled and tapped for the Cougar/T-Bird seat track. That's not very common but, depending on the model year of the Mustang, it can theoretically happen. Usually Mustang seat frames have both sets of holes already drilled in them.
No the funny thing is that you are assuming EVERYONE else is wrong, and there is NO WAY anyone could have EVER bolted Mustang seats onto their Tbird seat tracks. How many people have replied saying that they have?
I've bolted them up to power and non-power tracks. Some were bolt-in and go, and as Eric mentioned (and reminded me) some required you to perhaps drill and/or tap an existing hole. I think at the very least there are dimples in seat bases already for where the holes would go.
The Recaros will be a no go if you don't have the adapters used by the factory. You'll have 2 holes in the front and one on the back of each side of the seat bases. My '80 XR-7 with the factory Recaros had the adapter brackets, I had to build some for the '83 when I installed Recaros in it.
You claim to not be a newb...but you're letting 1-1/2" foil you on bolting seats in the car???
Looks like Chuck hit it on the head...
The statement above after NUMEROUS threads on this topic over the years has painted some people here that very picture...It was quite a bold statement that contradicted what is known to be true. You came off as quite pen 15y in the process as well.
Quit complaining, accept the fact that you were wrong, re-buttstuffyze the situation with the info provided in this thread (and perhaps search the site a little) and make it work for you.
after a search before i even posted this thread,i have read its possible...but its all over the map..
some bolt right up,some need fabwork.
far from a newb...but why am i going to fab up adapter plates, for subpar seats...if im going to do that, its going to be for a pair of aftmkt recaros/spearcos or soemthing alike..
this weekend i will post pics as to how off it really is.
hmm, well i have proven that a stock mustang seat, will not just BOLT straight into a tbird/cougar...
maybe mines the one off car...who knows though.
like i said,i will post pics this weekend to show how off they are.
Not according to some of the posts above.
You've apparently proven the seats currently in your possession won't fit in
YOUR car ;)
Excellent! I'm actually curious and would appreciate it.
In this instance, literally AND figuratively, lmao
Where did you get yours? I'm looking for more info on these seats...
O.K.,it's hard to see the whole seat (this photo is a few months old),but, these are Sport seats (used in Cougars,Birds, and Stangs, same thing different covering). They were a bolt in.As I stated before,I also used Stang seats (from a Fox Stang),Escort GT seats, and Cougarbird seats.
Can you post a pic of your seats? Is there any chance they were sold to you as Mustang seats when in fact they may not be,or do you know for a fact that they came from a Fox Stang?Just checking all the angles of the situation.
comke to think of it, i had put turbo coupe seats into my 92 gls tempo. i love t coupe seats. i might put some in the 00' stang with new covers on em'
I believe the Recaro seats from the Mustangs were the same ones used in Camaros, Firebirds and other cars (didn't Porsche also use them?). So all of the cars that used them--regardless of manufacturer--had to have special brackets made to fit Recaro seats. That would explain why there are not the "correct" holes in the bottom for the Thunderbird seat tracks.
Yes, the Recaros in my '83 are from an VW and the holes on the bottom match the ones on the Ford factory Recaros and any of the aftermarket ones (the old SE style) as well.
My old Pace Car and RS Turbo's had the factory Recaros and needed the adapter brackets to mate to the Ford seat tracks.
