Need to vent pulled aod put used one in everything hooked up went to bump starter to get to next torque converter bolt everything locked up I didn't line up the torque converter drain plug with the flywheel have to pull the trany back out stupid stupid ford and there torque converters with the studs why couldn't they be as smart as gm and put a bolt through the flywheel into the converter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bahhhh that bites man. Hey look at the bright side though, at least its a good-ol RWD LONGITUDINAL tranny, not a stupid front drive transverse engine-and-tranny combo. Man I would NOT wanna have to do that on a fwd car.
while your post was very difficult to read and understand, i gathered that you are blaming a ford design for the extra work incurred from your mistake. how exactly does user error relate to the validity of fords design?

Yeah me either, and I'm having trouble seeing how the torque converter drain plug has any affect on the motor from turning over.
I turn the engine over with a wrench to do that. Jesus bumpin' the starter sounds scary as ... You weren't under the car when you did it were you??
Problem is GMs don't have a drain plug(sucks)... GM guy works on Ford, fornicatess up...
Why dont you have to? Im *fairly* certain my buddy and I did when we pulled my tranny and re-assembled everything. How could you get around that??? Id like to know lol
Take it from someone who has replaced more flex plates than most ever will. Use the crank bolt to rotate the engine Paul. That's the best way to do it. I'll bet you I've changed over 150 flex plates at work (I was a fleet mechanic for America West Airlines). I got so good at doing them, that I could do a job from start to finish in 40 minutes. I was so sick of doing flex plates, that I made a little game out of it, to see how good I could get at replacing them.
True I guess you could do that LOL. Not like my breaker bar and my own strength can't turn the engine over, I have done that. Just didn't think of it. Now that you mention that...that might have been what sean and I did hahaha. I forget so much ...it is truly embarassing at times....:rolleyes: :o no drugs don't drink or anything...but ya cant fix stupid I guess...
step 1 of almost any car repair............ #1. disconnect negative terminal from battery.........
i don't think "bumping" the starter is in the official transmission swap manual :)
p.s. a socket and 1/2 in drive on the crank bolt is a winner
If you want to do yourself a favor, make a pair of bellhousing guide studs. I keep a set in my toolbox that I made a long time ago for installing C6's, C4's, FMX's and AOD's.
To make these guide studs, cut the heads off two 3/8" diameter bolts that are 2" long. After you've cut the heads off, use a high speed cutter (whizzer) to cut a slot into each of the studs on the ends where the heads used to be. The slots will allow you to use a screwdriver to remove the studs when the tranny has been slid tight up against the block.
Another piece of advice is to avoid threading a stud into the bottom passenger side bellhousing bolt hole on the engine. If you thread a stud into that hole, you can't install the tranny dipstick tube until the stud has been removed. On both sides, use the middle holes.
Once you've used those studs to install your tranny, you'll be ready to kick yourself for not having done it sooner.
The hardest part about installing a tranny as everyone knows, is mating the tranny to the block. From now on, it'll be a piece of cake for you.
For you turbo 4 cylinder guys, with your A4LD trannys; use 5/16" diameter by 1 1/2" long bolts to make your guide studs.

Honestly man, sounds like you started and did everything wrong. Learn the hard way they say;)
read up on the advice here a couple times, get your head around it and then its redo time.
