Question: Which should I get?
Got the idle and vaccum lines done, threw in sparkplugs and the car sounds awesome. Threw alittle more tranny fluid and went out for a drive :burnout: .
Spun the tire almost all the way to 40 mph. Now that the cars running right, I decided to go to jiffy lube to get saftey and emissions done, and I have no second gear. I have third, and overdrive but no 2nd...
I didn't notice that it was nuetral revving because I let off at the 2nd gear shift and slowed back down and parked it :hick:.
My father in law has given up on the car and wants it gone this weekend. I have been looking at a couple of cars.
87 XR7 black
Digital dash, turbo coupe interior and all the good stuff. But its in bad shape, needs a steering colum and exhaust and body is in rough shape. Needs exhaust. $300. If I got the car, I would gut the interior, tranny and axle, and throw it in my current car.
White 87 t-bird LX
The other is a 87 thunderbird, 87 5.0. I'm assuming base model. Runs fine and looks good, but has bad power steering and bad track on the passenger window. If I got that one it would have the new motor, and shouldn't need any other major work. The power steering I would swap out from my existing car, or junk yard and get a new rack. The exhaust is supposed to be good, and should only need 2 tires.
Overall its pretty much six's.
The car I have now is in decent shape, but is a light green, non-factory color. It needs a new hood and possible front clip, and I'll never find one the right color. I would like the body more of the bird, but the spiffy parts of the XR7 would be more fun...
Now back to work after all 3 hours I've had off today...
I've got an 87 turbo coupe for sale. You did say you like the looks of the birds! :)
mass is alittle bit of a walk for me. If you were down the street I'd look...
Just find another AOD. They came in so many cars. If you where closer I know a guy that has some SC AODs. that would be a good swap.
I say Cougar.
AOD's are hard to find, knowing they work at a junk yard, I'm looking at $400+ for a tested good one, with a 30 day warrenty/exchange. Unfortunately, time is a factor...
yeah but this one is worth it.......plus, if you for some reason you didnt like that one theres a very, very nice 83 turbo coupe worth looking at very close by as well. i wish i could have them both.
I like cougars, but the tbird sounds like its more solid shape. I vote tbird.
What do call "rough shape" for that cougar body description?
I'm thinking that it's worse than mine. But everybody has a different opinion about that.
Sounds like the car you have is as good as the ones you're looking at...
As far as the title of this thread, you have it backwards...
AOD's Rock, E7s SUCK... At least if you ever rode in my car that's what you'd think...
Wow 400 for an aod? i can grab one up here for 125 bucks....with a 30 day warranty..... cougar all the way, but work wise......t-bird, sounds like it in better shape..
come to ri
ill sell you a AOD for as much as you can give me
I looooooove my AOD. Between the shift kit itself and going ahead me maaaaaybe boring one or two of the holes just a tiny bit bigger than I was told *cough*OD->3rd*cough*:D the thing is so responsive you'd never know it was 21 years old....
Yup.
You have a project car already from what it sounds like. It also sounds like you want something in better shape than what you currently have.
Save some money and be patient until something better comes along.
I had AOD issues some time back (before the 5 speed swap).I pulled the valve body, and one at a time,I p[ulled each valve out, super cleaned, and re-installed until I did them all,re-installed the valve body, and the tranny worked like new.I found that a little crud can mess one up.I don't know if it's your problem, but it worked for me.You have to do that work in sanitary conditions.
I agree. Patience is the key factor. I've been working on mine for two years. When you get in a hurry, you end up with more of the same, problems, throwing money at a temporary fix. When, if you had waited, you could've had a nice ride that works well.I'd like to have had my car done a long time ago,but I really watch what I spend, and build one piece at a time, trying to do the most important work first. That's why I'm FINALLY getting ready for paint. I kept getting postponed due to upgrading the mechanicals of the car (engine, tranny, suspension). If you look hard, you can find a tranny cheaper than another car.Patience....Patience....Patience. Good luck with whatever direction you go with it.
You and Tom hit the nail on the head Zonda. Tweak them the right way and AOD's rock!!! I can't wait to see how my ride responds to a Dirty Dog converter and a Silverfox valve body.
I think there's some good advice in this thread. I think you ought to save up some money and fix up the car you already have. It's more fun doing it that way.
I also noticed that someone's back to not putting spaces after their punctuation marks. I'm ducking in antition of the hail of bullets. :rollin:
:hick:
Point taken.
By the way, I actually did space every so often in my above posts. LOL.
You know we only give you a hard time, because we like you so much Vinnie. I can't imagine what this forum would be without you. :D
I know, I can take it. I haven't ben on ANY forum as "home" as this.
No worries here, Vin. I can read your posts just fine.
Now when someone types a 600 word run on sentence and those 600 words are the ramblings of a lunatic......
And yes, we've had a few of those.
Don't worry, when you're out of school you can stay with us as loooong as you want :D :hick: LOL
LOL. True. I've been here too long to worry about things. Now,if someone would just send me some free spindles.................
Yes, that's funny alright. I've been out of school and college for some time.
Maybe you should go back and learn to type...
I didn't go to school to be a secretary, or type for a living. I have a good job, a daughter in college, two sons on their own now, one boy in the 7th grade, a great wife, a nice house, and a good life. A space after a comma really doesn't concern me that much in the scheme of things. I am glad that I have you to watch over me and take care of my lack of spaces after a sentence, though. Thanks a lot for being there for me. I'm sure that your efforts would be better used helping someone else with larger, more grand problems than my apparent lack of spacing.Again,I appreciate you, the help from you in the past with my first H.O swap (couldn't have done it without your TONS of answers to all my repetitive questions every day for a week about all the little things that make the swap work well), and all you do and the time you devote to making sure I am the best typist that a car guy needs to be, and really SHOULD be.
Each has his own opinion...
Again Tom, thanks for your concern. On the quote you chose to show, that's only an edited part of a sentence to fit your grammar "cause". Just let it go. It really shouldn't cause you this much concern and effort. If I start spacing the way you want me to all the time, I have to wonder who's going to be the next person to get the honor of being judged by you. It's ridiculous. As I stated, let it go, move on to car stuff, and quit following me watching how I type......or don't type.
Vinnie you can type however you choose, just remember right or wrong, people judge by what they can see.
Back on topic.....Haystack.....have you made any decisions yet about what you're going to do? Repairs or different car?Wuuzzup?
Tom, quit trolling Vinnie about his typing. He gets it, he got it a long time ago. :rollin:
Back on topic, E7s and AODs both suck. :flame:
I'm going to look at the tbird today, I had to go to the hospital with my wife yesterday. She's about ready to pop. I really leaning towards the white bird right now. I just need to get a car going. I can fix the power steering in it in a day or two, and drive it on a temp tag for two weeks. If everything else is good on it, I'll just pull the motor out of my current bird and wait till a good weekend to put it in this one.
And Vinnie, I grew up around computers a typing, but I'm horrible speller and around punctuation. I take a little bit of time to proof read all my posts, but I don't catch all of it. As long as I can read your messages and its not all in caps, I don't care..
You must be a member on FvC if you know about silverfox, and dirty dog converters!
Your wife's about ready to pop? Is this your first child? It's awesome.Good luck with the potential new car.Is the one your driving good for parts to sell and get a little money back before it's crushed.or whatever else?
The body is in good shape, but try selling a car for money with a bad interior and no engine with a bad tranny...
First kid. Monday is our one year anniversary. Shes got a doctor's appointment Monday and they'll decided weather or not to induce her or not. Her due date they thought was Saturday, but now there thinking that it was the 10th. Anyways, in a week I'm gonna be a dad.
I looked at the car, its in pretty good shape. Alot of power options, including an antenna that dosen't work. Its the 5.0, has a slight miss and idle needs to be adjusted. Dead battery and power window on the passenger side is off the track. It has a bad power steering line that Ill have to fix to pass safety. Good exhaust and tires though, which greatly offsets the cost vs the other car.
I put $100 down on it, and Ill get him the other $300. Best part, the engine seems to run good, might need spark plugs. The guy wouldn't let me floor it cause it has no tags and he didn't want to get it towed. But the tranny I got to 3rd gear and it seemed to shift fine. Still had the stock plastic parts on the TV thing, and had alot of plastic covers in the engine compartment that I've never seen before.
I can't wait to se pics, especially under the hood.I wonder what the "covers" are.I have a coil cover in mine, and a couple of spares in the garage. The miss in the engine could be a few different things.I'm sure you'll figure that out.Take your time and don't get into a hurry swapping everything if it's already running good. You have a kid you'll be dealing with soon.LOL.
Everyone's definition of 'suck' is different. It's all subjective.
Are the E7's better than the E6's? No question about that. E6's truly suck.
Are aftermarket heads better than E7's? Of course. E7's suck compared to them.
Say what you want about E7's but they are tough, cheap and readily available. That is value and bang for the buck that can't be touched, and hence the reason they're so attractive. If aftermarket aluminum 5.0 heads were $500/pair then E7's would be totally insignificant. Until then, they're the kings of budget builds.
As for AOD's...in my experience:
8 cars, 11 AOD's.
And two of those cars had C5's.
Enough said. ;)
Stock for these cars, AOD's are not all that great; good when they work, really bad when they don't. Mustang AOD's are a hair better. SC AOD's are about the best from the factory. They're not getting easy to find, though, or can be expensive when you do find one. Internally a regular AOD can be built to SC specs. But for the price, you could get pretty stout 4R70W guts in an AOD casing. So it does come down to money, again, and in that respect you just have to compare notes very carefully.
I'll still side with Haystack though. E7's rock over stock, and AOD's suck when stock.
I have ported E-7's on my car. They are way better than the E-6 heads that the engine came with ('87 Mark VII engine).I'd love to have a set of aluminum heads,or even GT40's (but not with my flat top pistons),but, the E-7 heads were literally almost free off of a truck. Can't beat that at all.I can always swap to aluminum when the new engine is built and the funds are more readily available for that stuff. With a daughter in college,it'll wait.
It's not like vinnie's posts are hard to read or anything, nor does he say things like "paided." There's a line between someone who isn't great at typing and grammar, and someone who just sounds like an idiot. Vinnie doesn't cross that line.
Anyways...onto the subject of E7s and AODs. I like my E7s. They were cheap, and way better than the old E6s. However, my GT40Y aluminums will be even better! As for AODs, yeah, they suck. I'd much rather have a solid WC T5.
Oh, and vinnie: pics of your daughter or BAN! :flip:
O.K.,I'll post a picture of my girl.Any smack talk and I'll beat your A$$ if I have to drive all the way up there and hunt you down like an animal. This is our Kacie.......
vin
im impressed shes a cute one!
(please dont hurt me, its a compliment, im not a horn dog)
Luckily she's freakishly smart.7 years of college to be a psychologist. We're proud of her.
Very pretty daughter you have there, vinnie. I've also noticed the lack of pics of the Tbird too. You're slackin on us! ;)
I am slacking.I was supposed to post pics this evening since I didn't yesterday, and still didn't get it done.Tomorrow for sure.I get carried away sanding and let time slip away from me.I'm thinking seriously about taking tomorrow off and working on the Sport.I can probably get REALLY close to ready for paint in 8 hours.I can't wait for the old Bird to look nice. It's been a long time since this car looked good. When i got it,the interior looked like an angry cat took it's frustrations out on everything. The carpet was so bad, there were spots that you could literally knock on it was so stiff.Whoever applied the second coat of paint must have done it in the driveway, and they didn't bother sanding the car,so,I've had to remove a LOT of paint. The lower rear passenger side 1/4 panel was creased by something from wheel to bumper.the 1/4 windows are very dry rotted (I have a cure for those windows),and on and on.It's finally starting to come together.Patience,a "zero dollar" budget (absolutely NO money from our paychecks went to this car),and a LOT of salvage yard hunting, trading, and selling.I love it.
how old is she?? My monitor is messed up so the pics dont look right, but she doesnt look that old
She'll be 19 in January.
wait so how has she done 7 years of college?
I knew she was around 18-21, i thought so.
No,she's in her first year,6 more to go after this year. She's all about work and career right now.She works at a doctor's ofice helping with answering phones, making appointments, and filing charts. She loves it.She also gets free medical while she works there. Not a bad deal.
good for her
i would think she would have her head in the right place, i mean we all know how you are, and its nice to see your daughter has inherited that trait
Thanks a lot.Her mom,my wife Gayle,is a real business oriented chick.Numbers,organization,charts,filing,etc.I'm glad I have her to manage my life for me............whether I want her to or not.LOL.
Wow vinnie can't believe you posted a pic!
She's very cute. Great to hear she's got something she loves and is good at. She'll go far that's for sure.
and since i cant help it and i wanna be the first to do so
plus im short and live far away so it makes no difference
Is she single?
O.K.,here we go.........Yes,she's single. She refuses to date until she's out of college. She dated before school, but states she doesn't want any distractions because college is too important, and she's working hard now so she doesn't have to all her life.
haha I was busting
what the hell would she want with a 17 year old 5'5" munchkin like me any way
but good for her! Shes def going places in life.
Word got out that Vinnie posted a pic somewhere. LOL
She's taller than you are Mason.Probably meaner, too. She has a wicked serious side more often than not.
Hey Jeddy,I post pics from time to time.I PROMISE,T-bird pics tomorrow.I PROMISE !!!!!!!!
that doesnt suprise me haha
what you dont see on here is the shy, sweet boy i am.
stupid girls are witches and manipulative....
Honestly, I never noticed that there were no spaces between Vinnie's sentences, until someone pointed it out.
Vinnie you better not tell anyone your address. All the single 16-20 year olds on here are going to try to find your daughter ;) You'll have to :beatyoass: with a stick to keep 'em away.
No way. Not me. Never. :D
WHERE ARE TEH PICS!?!?!?!? :flip: :toilet: :shakeass:
dp
I FORGOT AGAIN!!! I'll step out right now and take a couple of pics....hold on a few minutes. My apologies.I went out for supper and got distracted.
O.K.,I'll start a thread right now for the "in progress" body work.
don't post em yet... I still gotta take pictures of my car. If you do, then nobody is gonna read my thread...
Oh BTW, the car is out front.
I started a different thread.I kind of got dragged to the front of your thread, and really didn't ask for the attention here,it was thrust upon me.Feel free to post the pics of your "new" Bird on my new thread while they're fresh.Go on,post 'em.
I have absolutely NO problem beating the out of any idiot. My attitude is really calm 99% of the time, but I have an angry streak when necessary.Since I left the police dept. after two years of service,I haven't really had a reason to get physical with anyone, and the military was before that.I have stayed in shape just for these occassions.Once Kacie has left home for good and is truly all on her own,I can feel free to let myself go.LOL.BUT,until that day comes, and not in the near future.................:beatyoass:
Ill get around to it. I worker from 11pm to 3:45 am last night, then got called in on an "emergency" job at 9:30 this morning. With how much my wife wakes me up, Ill bet I only slept two or three hours. Pics might have to wait till tommorrow.
No worries.Sleep on the couch when you really need a little sleep and the wife is restless. You're going to need to be rested up real soon. When our youngest was born,I took 31 days off.I had plenty of leave saved up and I got up every night, throughout the night to feed and change Alex.Once I started back to work,he was pretty much resting through the night. My wife has Scoliosis, and had a hard tome carrying our kids while pregnant,so,I figured since she couldn't hardly sleep while she was pregnant,I'd let her get a months rest.Sleep and rest are two entirely different things you know.
psh I would never. Thats a whole lot of gas I dont have money to buy.
I'll take either rest or sleep sometime tommorrow. I didn't sleep well last night. Woke up at 6:00am and took a long shower. Showed up to work at 7:10(10 minutes late), worked till 7:30pm, did paper work till about 8, and drove home. I'm working at 10.00pm tonight till about 6 am. I may work part of tommorrow as well depending on how I feel. Then I'm gonna hit the dmv and get a temp tag on the new car, then I'm gonna get started on pulling the motor, taillights/head lights, and some of the interior for the new car. Then I gotta set up for the junk yard to come pick it up. Hopefully I can get that all done by 9ish tommorrow night and sleep a couple hours and get up at 5:30 to go to the hospital.
I'll be taking about 2 weeks off. That's all I'll be able to afford. I might end up working for part of that though. I just got a promotion and I'm trying to look good for the higher ups. In a month or two everything will smooth out and Ill have some time to sit around.
Take care of the family, work hard, and it'll all be fine.Glad to hear you're making progress (or planning to soon) with the new car. When do we see pics?
Update !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
