Title: expert advice on dash with airbag
Post by: jcassity on October 08, 2008, 12:01:40 AM
Kia Sophia 1996 with airbag on pass side.

dash is pulling up dead center along the windshield sort of curling up in a huge area.

I am interested in replacing the dash with a bone yard find but want advice on the airbag precautions and what i may need to do prior to dash removeal.

anyone with specific information that generally applies to dash units with air bag?

are you worried about them going off?

most are controlled by a module. unplug it, and you should be good.

On the wifes old kia sportage, I had to unplug the driver knee airbag and from that day forward, the air bag light was on.  I could not clear it nor could the dealer, nor do we know if it would have deployed due to the problem.

I think the battery disconnect idea is the way to go,, thanks shawn.

let the car sit for a while after disconnecting the battery. I hear they hold a charge for a few minutes after loss of power as a safety backup feature.

whats a sir fuse?

just guessing,, could that be a "series inline resistive" fuse?

lost me.

if so, that reminds me of a acronym for a part my company puts on the output of our rectifiers call a "MOV".  "Metal Oxide Varistor" to buffer the demand inrush on the ouput of the rectifiers.

A MOV is a industry, std term... Many TVs use them as well...
