Title: Gas Tanks
Post by: jpc647 on July 27, 2008, 06:28:58 PM
Anyone know where to get a gas tank for a 1988 thunderbird with a 3.8l? The local parts store only has the 22 gallon which is for he turbo coupe. If i use it, won't my gas gauge be inaccurate?

All 1987-88 cars had the 22.1 gallon tank, FYI. Som of the owners manuals from those years had incorrect information.

1983-85 V6/V8 tanks = 20.6 gallons
1986-88 V6/V8 tanks = 22.1 gallons
1983-86 turbo 4 tanks = 18.0 gallons
1987-88 turbo 4 tanks = 22.1 gallons

Not true,my 87 TC has the smaller tank.
My old 88 5.0L bird had the larger tank.

If it's an '87 that might stand to reason that it was a running change. Or it could be a Canada thing. But a majority of the NATO guys from 1987-88 have confirmed the 22.1 gallon tank.

i have never been able to fit more than 16gal. in my 87 TC on a normal fillup.
i also purchased an 18gal. replacement tank(new) which is identical to the one in the car, but never used it.

and from workin under my dads 87 3.8 i can say his tank seemed larger than mine(more in my way), but i didnt actually measure anything to find out...
