Title: Got a new speed demon to replace the TC!
Post by: bhazard on June 15, 2008, 09:07:51 PM
HA, not really.

And by speed demon... I mean... gasmiser.

93 Ford Festiva L baby. 167,000 miles on the clock. Rust free. Not quite dent free. Starts and runs like a champ. Brakes and tires are shot. Parts are dirt cheap though.

Scored for $450. Put money down on it today and will finish the deal tomorrow when banks are open. I should be able to manage 50 mpg out of it, which will pay off quickly.

Doesn't matter how much gas goes up, i could not bring myself to drive or be seen in one of those.
It kinda sucks that the world has come to this.

I actually cannot believe how roomy it is inside. Its also pretty peppy. 65hp goes a long way in a 1600-1700 lb car.

A B6t swap from a turbo 323 or capri is an instant 200% bump in horsepower. Theyre like 132hp from the factory and 200hp is easy. Oh yeah, the motor is a direct drop in.

See the following...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3DWpQ9qhag
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cda6HH2Q9Hc

And this one would probably lay waste to just about anything we have to offer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogHfsnnt2cc&feature=related

So yeah, I wouldnt knock the fordmazdakiamobile.... they have potential.

Im looking to use about half the gas I do right now anyway, so a turbo/bigger engine isnt planned.

Heh yeah, I have a liking for the domestic turbos I guess. Of course turbo fords and a bit for the dodges now that we have had the shadow for a while now. I just wish it had a 5 speed!

Now I know the mazda turbo motors arent domestic but I *did* want a turbo capri before I found my TC. Never did get ahold of one though. Then I got my GF into them and basically its next on her list of cars to get. The shadow is her first car, so after its gone she will move on up to a capri, and then someday get her dream mini cooper s, lol.

Have fun going poor then....Most cars like that up here are in such a poor state they would cost too much to fix....I wouldn't mind finding a Dodge Colt diesel.

I'm like dominator lord I couldn't stand having to run around in a little toy like that all the time but with gas where it is I could totally use it the majority of the time and then say on weekends or once or twice a week drive the cougar to work or use it for a random trip here and there to "get my fix" lol.

I would just put a decent ler just to free up air flow a CAI of some kind, that should boost mileage fairly well, then just tint the hell out of it so for those who dont like to be seen wont be haha.

The SHOgun

In 1990, Chuck Beck of Special Editions and Rick Titus took seven Festivas, gutted the interiors, and mounted Ford SHO 3.0 L V6s behind the front seats to make the car mid-engined. There were substantial cosmetic and mechanical changes, including relocating the gas tank to the front of the car, structural bracing and improvements to the chassis, adding wider wheel arches to accommodate a wider stance and larger tires, and a complete redesign of the suspension. These changes resulted in a car that could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, travel the ¼ mile (0.4 km) in 12.9 seconds at 100.9 mph (162 km/h), and could achieve a lateral acceleration figure ranging from .95 to 1.04 g [1]. Of the seven, Jay Leno owns the silver one, which is number 003

Go ahead and make fun of Festivas all your want now. :hick:

I had one of these things when new in the late 80's. Wasnt our 1st choice but had just gotten married and needed a cheap car and it did atleast include a Ford emblem. Honestly for what it was it served it's purpose. It got great mpg and I didnt care if it got a door ding( my other cars were a 59 Bird & a 73 Vette) only thing the car ever needed was timing belt every 70k. I think the thing had 185k when my brother in law sold it(I gave it to him at 120k) and was still going.

its in good shape the parts and cheap and the gas mileage is great but the downside is the only thing it looks better than is a smartcar.

the closet thing i will get to a gas saver will be a Lincoln Mark 8 LSC.

If it's anything like my dad's old Ford Fiesta (from 1979?) it'll get over 300,000 miles at 42mpg.  The cost savings in gas will pay for the car soon enough.  My Saturn was paid for in 2 months by saving gas over driving the Jeep.  They serve their purpose.

I just can't deal with a car that small.

My Scirocco I just sold was a touch bigger than that and it was still too small, and I used to drive the VW's all the time before I got into the Fords.

Something like that would be cool for a commuter car in a larger city, but I could not handle it for anything else, esp if highway driving was part of the trip.

The Volvo gets good overall mileage, and everything I have that I drive alot (the XR-7 doesn't get driven alot) gets 25-30mpg on the interstate.

I always laugh at such idiotic statements as "Imagine hitting a semi in that". I've got news for you, sunshine. Even if you hit a semi in a Suburban, chances are you're gonna get squished. In fact, this past winter a Ford Econoline 15 passenger van, probably one of the largest non-commercial vehicles you can buy, hit a semi in New Brunswick. Seven high school students and an elementary school teacher died on impact. The semi opened the van up like a pop can. When you hit something weighing upwards of 80,000 pounds it makes little difference whether you're driving an 1800 pound shiznitbox or a three-ton behemoth. You're gonna die.

Even if you hit another Suburban with a Suburban chances are you're gonna die. The only difference is that you'll probably take the other driver out with you.

It kinda sucks that the world has come to this.

Actually, it doesn't suck all that much. The rest of the world came to this decades ago. We've been spoiled with cheap fuel in North America.

I think this car was geared for city driving. Its remarkably quick to 30 mph. After that of course, its a festiva.

The best part is every nut and bolt in the engine bay is 10mm. At least that was the case with my assfire. And yeah festivas rock. Don't forget to put a coffee can on the tailpipe, and yes before you ask you can get spinner hubcaps for 13 inch rims. Chikka chikka sweet:rollin:

Hahahaha

Well, the front brakes are done. Rear shoes arent on top priority at the moment, next is finding tires. Cant find 12's anywhere. The junkyard down the road has a dodge colt with two decent 175/70/13's on it that should go on, but those tires are a *bit* on the large side, stock tire size is 145/sr12 and the speedometer would read quite a bit low and the 65hp would be a lot less effective...

Ahh put some 20's on it! Ha!

Wow, I've never owned a car with 12's on it - I had one that ran 12's but 13 is the smallest wheeled auto I've had.

Sounds like you're having fun getting it reliably back on the road at least.
