It's an '85 Volvo 244 Turbo. It has the 2.1L intercooled turbo 4 with a manual trans.
The VW was just too small and the drive wheels were on the wrong end. I have been thinking about one of these for a while, but was kind of waiting. The deal fell together with buying this car and selling my VW though all to easily. Both this car and my buyer were in Chicago. So I drove the VW up and the Volvo back this past Sat, and made out on the deal.
It needs some work (but so did my VW) but will make a good driver once I take care of a few things and have some fun with it. The tiny wheels/tires aside, these are pretty well-balanced platforms with 4-wheels disks, a 5-link rear end stock.
And it's turboed....
is it gas or diesel?
Gas.
Are you gonna slip a lima under that head?:D
It's just an 8V (the older B21) with the K-Jet mechanical FI.
I might swap in a later B23 or 16V, but I also just might convert this to EFI using MS. I don't need a 300hp powerplant in this thing.
Still learning my way around these things. The last Volvo I had to drive was 20 years ago.
I think I have a "big" Ford 2.3T turbo sitting around that would make an upgrade for this as it uses a smaller T3.
Cool...
Pict kinda looks as if smoke or steam is coming from the engine...
Might have been a smudge or something. I have yet to see any smoke or steam come off this thing.
Nice.
My dad drives an '83 240 DL, Just the standard 4 banger.
220,000miles almost all original parts, been in an accident, and the sucker still drives good. :mullet:
Turning radius is freaking awesome also.
nice car.
i always wanted one of those but when i have the money to get one i cant find a stick one.
Nice. I love the old Volvos. Things are bulletproof. Unlike the newer ones...
I wouldn't mind finding an old 242 turbo, or a 740 turbo wagon, or better yet, a 780. Maybe if gas prices ever come down I'll find one for a daily driver. I never did find Volvos easy on fuel - my old 740 GLE (non-turbo) was fairly hard on gas, and the V70XC was as bad as a Jeep Cherokee...
Well I've been working a bit on this to sort out a few issues, but I did get it's new shoes on...

much better!
did it require any spacers to make em fit nice?
Yup. 25mm adapter/spacers. 245/40-17 tires, and yes, those are 17x8 Mustang wheels.
. That looks mighty nice!
Looks good! like the fog lights too!
I smell...
*sniff sniff*
A 5.0 swap :D
Ha good one!
you know it will get a 2.3T if it gets anything
I dunno, when I got to see and ride in Michael Yount's 5.0 Volvo, it really was AWESOME. And he said the kit for it works really well.
while that might be true, you hafta consider who you are talkin to...
i doubt it gets a lima either
Wow, that is honestly one of the best looking Volvo grocery-getters I think I've ever seen.
Well I wouldn't go that far. In the short time I have been looking at these, I have seen MANY much nicer ones.
Mine's a 20-footer that represents much better in the pics. The paint is pretty good overall, but the clear is peeling in a couple spots. It looks good going down the road, and the new stance with the slight lowering and the wheels/tires really works for me.
A 5.0 will NEVER see this engine bay. Are you kidding? It will probably remain Volvo-powered, with at the very least an upgrade to MegaSquirt to get rid of the mechanical fuel injection (K-Jetronic). It's a light car though (2800-2900#).
It is just a driver for me though, so while it will see a lot of chassis/suspension/brake improvements, I don't see the need for mucho power out of it.
That car is the epitome of shagy..lol
The Stang wheels imo set it off nicely.
One other thing...does it apper to anyone else, with a quick glance at the grille and headlights to somewhat resemble an 85 or so Capri?
I just noticed that...maybe the 4-eye bug has bit me.
Time will tell if THAT rumor is indeed true or not...
Anyway, looks awesome Chuck, as always, kudos.
Did your adapters change the bolt pattern as well? I'd always thought Volvos used the 5-on-4.25" pattern, same as MN12's...
You are correct on both counts.
Nope, sure aint. It'd make for an awesome, well balanced track car :D . I've experienced it in person! Could you imagine the look on peoples' faces when you start it up and it has the sound of a built 5.0?
Haha, I'm just kidding as far as thinking that YOU would do it. But me? I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Chuck, at least you got a "four-eyed" Volvo! Looks great with those wheels.:burnout:
Good thing this isn't your thread then.
are you going to run it without the caps on the wheels or was that just for the pictures? I know they have the pony on them but honestly you cant see the pony unless you get real close and you called it a 20 footer so..?
