Title: swapped the hydrobooster out
Post by: lakenheath24 on March 27, 2008, 06:16:46 PM
i have swapped the hydrobooster system out(88TC) in favor of one from a 90 mustang GT. My question is, can i use the mustang mastercylinder or is it completely useless for my stock TC 4 wheel disks? As far as looks, man the room it made along with the neatness is incredible. i will post a pic as soon as i get the brake lines plumbed.

It wasn't a hydrobooster, it was an ABS modulator/master cylinder. Hydroboost uses the power steering pump for power brakes.

The Mustang master cylinder will give you a very low pedal and poor braking - it doesn't have the fluid capacity for rear discs. You'll need a master cylinder for a four-wheel-disc Fox. I used a '93 Cobra master cylinder for my 88 Bird with TC brakes all 'round. 94-95 5.0 Mustang or 94-99 3.8 Mustang will work as well (4.6 Mustangs used hydroboost with a different master cylinder).

Sounds like a downgrade to me.

I used a stock TC prop valve. Ideally I should have used an adjustable one. Ideally.

Since your car is a TC you shouldn't have any problems with the stock prop valve. Mine's a V8 car (heavier in the front) so the balance is probably a little off.

 I still agree with bhazard...

I have an SVO master cylinder on mine. Stock prop valve, 73mm front calipers. Admittedly, the pedal is a tad soft, but it hauls the car down pretty well, I've made several panic stops since the swap and I've had no problems with locking up the brakes.

Give it a try and see.  You may be ok.  You might want to swap up to the Lincoln Mk 6 (yes 6) or "Towncar" MC with the 1" bore. I suggest that one based on the MC you swapped in.  Actually that MC you installed isn't from a '90 Mustang, at least not stock.  87 and later used the AL body MC with the plastic tank on it.  Someone had swapped for the earlier style, so who knows what unit that it.  Without pulling it off and measuring the bore, you really won't know what you have for certain.

The SVO/Lincoln one was mentioned (1-1/8" bore) but unless you are using the 73mm front calipers, it will be overkill.  I use the 1" bore on on both my Foxes (one with Cobra brakes all round and one with Vette PBRs in the front and SVO's on the rear) and the pedal feel/modulation is good.

I actually like the Teves pump at the very least, even if the ABS portion is not used.  I have the same set-up on my Scorpio with the Vette brakes on it and have the ABS sensors pulled on the front.  The pedal feel is always firm and consistent.  Since you pulled it, you might as well dig into it and get rid of that mess from the harness, or most of it.

chuck,
The booster is a 90 Gt, the master cylinder is an SVO unit. The prop valve is a Summit unit. I rerouted the wiring under the fenders as best I could and the brake stuff will be tucked under the left fender(just in case) I dont plan on using the ABS but i always keep everything.  Unfortunatly my jeep has a rod going so i gotta throw this thing together quicker than i wanted to.  I am sure the original set-up was good, i just had everything out of the bay and thought what the heck.

Well that MC is going to be overkill.  The pedal will be pretty stiff.

yes it will. my plan was to go to 5-lugs w/73MM calipers up front so eventually it'll work out.  jeep messed up my flow plan.

FWIW, I've read that when using the SVO MC, the acorn nut needs to be turned out about 1.5 turns to stiffen up the pedal feel.  It's only what I read though.

Supposed to be a 0.010" clearance between the pushrod and MC.
