Title: i think MY tranny destroyed it's self last night!!
Post by: CougarCoupe88 on February 26, 2005, 01:10:05 PM
so im driving on the high way doing like 60 and im in D so i shift to OD and you know im crusing for a little while as i come over this bridge. so i say hell with it le me open it up some more. (now at this point i know that the tranny has been funny with od and speeding up like i could never get it to drop down rite with out it doing some crazy  nutral thing and slaming back into gear.) so i slowly hit the gas more and more. then from lik 2k it jumps to 4k then 6k :nono:  almost in a split second. and i fliped out and then when it wouldnt go. i was coasting on the highway.  then some how some way i think i was at the rite speed and it cought a gear. second i belive then i pulled into a parking lot. parked it and gatherd my thoughts.  so i desided to go for it i wasnt to far from home so i put it in first . it cought it. so im like ok whats going on . hit the road again road first out till 3k then shifted to second and thats where it stoped 4k at  40 mph. so i lost 3rd and od.

i think the trans Go kit has something to do with this. but now i screwed. im gonna have to barrow the Cougars tranny till that gets put back together.  or atemmpted to be .  but i also need to drive like 45 min away on tuesday to go see a lawyer.!!! man i'll tell ya  i just started to like this car and it does this.  but now i know when they say. "if it aint brok dont fix it" and  "once you mess with an automatic thats when it all goes wrong " and it did.

may be the converter whent. does that sound like it  or any ideas. or tear it apart and see ?
later

Did that with the trans go shift kit and basically the same thing happened and i toasted my trans, transgo is junk, stay far away from them.
Go with a superior kit, much easier to install and gives you results.

Sounds you toasted the direct drive clutch. I had it happen to me twice. First time it just burnt up, second time I changed the trottle body and didn't hook the TV linkage back up thinking it was for the cruise control. :brick:
Either way it looks like you either need a rebuild or an assembly. A get something else besides a "TransPoo" try a PA valve body.

So you where in OD when it did this crazy f'd up thing?  Cause it could be your TV cable broken.  It heard it was important.  Then again, i've seen my AOD shiznit out all it's fluid and drive 50 miles with cougar attached to it... I'm trying to say it might also be low on fluid.  Or in need of a filterchange.  Or save up for that 5.0 HO with the 5 speed swap.

I know TransGo's are junk in newer 4.6 trannies... but I've heard nothing but good things about them on AOD's.

50K miles on a Trans-Go. No problems here.

i guess what it all comes down to is how strong the internals are on the trans . or just like cars some are good and some are junk even though they are the same . we are talking about two things mass produced.  line pressure is good. i have fluid. we changed the filter when we did the kit. back in dec.  for now it lets me get back and forth to work. but im gonna have to find a tranny. and fast .

does anyone think i should waist my time with a older crown vic or marque ?? or hunt down a 5.0 stang.  i would use the mark VII but then i have to shorten the drive shaft.

All you gotta do is chop a little bit off the end of the shaft yoke... Wasn't hard.

If the Trans go shift pak was installed on a high mile tranny it will grenade it.  From what I've heard.

When you checked the fluid did it funny smell to it?

I have a '89 Mustang tranny in mine, It works great with the exception of the speedo is of by 10 mph. But just about any AOD will work w/ the exception of the Mark trans.

You can't get some one to bench rebuild one for you? If you pull it out the car and if you know a good trans. mechanic just give him some money on the side and he can probably rebuild it on his lunch break.

if you decide to get another tranny then look for the ugliest dirtiest greasiest filthiest one you can find.

9 times out of 10, the reason its filthy is because it use to be attached to an engine with a rear main or valve cover or intake gasket leak.

2nd factor in choice..
find one marked as an LTD, Linc, mark and such.  Those will be tranny's previously owned by more calm/mature drivers perse' vs one marked as off a mustang ect ect.
mines off an 83 LTD, had the lollie pop in it,, had to switch out shifter linkages with my old aod but thats it.

thats gonna be the one with the lollie pop in it.,yes the lollie pop!  thats the one nobodys been in yet.  That will be the one you want.

From past AOD that worked well then lost 3-4 it as always been the 3-4 input shaft that has snaped.  I have had my old AODs built very well and they shifted nice and hard.

My last one went the same way. I pulled onto the hwy and was speeding up kind ahard and when the tranny shifted into 3rd it snaped the shaft and by time i got limped off the HWY in 2nd gear i had destoyed the trany.

I have another AOD that lasted 2 days then pump started to wine when i downshift so pulled it and slaped ina stick,  5 T5s later i'm thinging of a Lentech Strip Terminator with a 9ich racermaster converter

Chirp you must broke more than just the input shaft... I busted mine at the drag strip first time out back in '00. Drove it 93 miles home in 2nd, repl the shaft(with a hardened one) and its still working...

You guys can diss the Trans-go all you want, I'd install another one.

The last one that snaped i got maybe 10 miles on it to limp it home.
I had shaft stuck in the converter and other half stuck in drum.

It damaged the drums as well as the planetary gears were damaged

humm. thats rite 2 shafts. to bad you have to tear down the whole tranny to get to those shafts . im just gonna take the cougars and put the T-go kit in this one if it's a B-servo trans other wise just stock..  and a good converter

Inner shaft is no problem to replace, just slides out. I got lucky, mine broke in the converter, banged it on the workbench a couple of times and it fell out...

Mine was not so lucky.  i had to have the converter cut open and rebuilt.
Other half of the shaft is still stuck in the drum to this day.
makes a good door stop

Anyone else had problems with their T-5s.  Im going to do it regardless but im worried that i might destroy it driving it, ive never owned a car with a stick not to say i dont know how to drive stick, almost every work truck i have driven was a manual.  Should i get super strong stuff.

OK. i think it's been narrowed down to what caused this failure.  one the cars radiator is to small.  the clutch fan is shot. which Equals. HEAT. and with out a trans cooler. im surprised it lasted this long. i think only bc the Cold weather. and with the trans go kit increasing the line pressure. that probably makes more heat. . and us just putting in the "B" servo in a "C" servo trans..
