Can you run an older non-aod tranny in '88Tbird LX??

You mean like a C4??? Yup, but it will take some mods to the shift linkage, crossmember and I believe you'll need a new flexplate.

If it was me, I'd just run a cable shifter, I'm partial to the B&Ms myself, you'll free up some horses if you make the swap, plus C4s are cheap to extremely cheap to build to handle a good amount of power, go for it.
