Title: Transmission shifter button question
Post by: 5.0willgo on February 08, 2005, 07:42:21 PM
A friend of mine has a 93 cougar with the 3.8. When she starts the car and tries to put it in drive, she cannot press in the button on the shifter to get it out of park. In order to get the car out of park, she has to first turn the key to accessories where then she can press the button and put the shifter in neutral. She then starts the car and has no problems shifting into any gear or putting the car in park. Does anyone know why the button on the shifter sticks when the car is started in park?

erm. i might not be of much help, but i think i used to suffer the same issue. if this is a column shifter it's as simple as either trying harder, or applying the brake

My brother had the same problem. 92 cougar 3.8. I'll ask him how he fixed it when I get home.

The car may have a brake/shift interlock  I have no familiarity with the circuit, but that is what I would suspect

Ok I finally got around to asking my brother how he fixed it. And yes it is the brake/shift interlock. He just undid his and it works just fine. I think it is located on the right side of the shifter.
