found that thread, made me more comfortable with the thought of pulling it to swap in a converter if i get one.

BUT: just for reference how many bolts hold the tranny to the engine? how many are up near the intake? can i get a socket onto em from the engine bay? should i remove the upper intake to give myself some room?

also jcassity mentioned "make sure to remove the starter" why is this? any other little things like that the thread doesnt mention? i want to be completely ready for this.

o woops how about the driveshaft? is that hard to take off?

you'll need a 12 point 12mm socket/wrench to get the  off for the driveshaft. they are loc-tite(d?) from the factory, so they'll feel tight coming out. disconnect the coil wire, take the "inspection plate off near the flexplate, and have someone bump the engine over with a key to remove all 4 bolts/nuts for the converter. you should have 6 bellhousing bolts. you'll need a 5/8" socket and as many extensions and swivels you can find. the top 2 bolts you can get to from up top with a wrench. the starter has to come off as it is attached to the the bellhousing. be sure to disconnect the battery BEFORE you move the starter. disconnect the cooler lines at the trans, unplug all electrical connections, and the shifter linkage. you'll need a 13mm(1/2") socket and a 15mm wrench for the crossmember, and 9/16"(14mm) socket for the tranny mount nuts.

ive done this a few times. :)

I've done it twice in my car so far. Once when motor went in and once when I changed the flex plate.

I supported the tranny on a tranny jack I rented (best $20.00 ever),and removed the tranny crossmember after the driveshaft was removed.I let the tranny down and the engine tilted back (had a floor jackk under it). After the tranny was let down, the bolts on the bell housing were very easy to get to.I had an old driveshaft yoke I used as a plug for the tailshaft.

I'm lazy, would  this (http://"http://www.etoolcart.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9420") make the driveshaft bolts removal easier?

Loc-tite the driveshaft when you re-install it!

I used a wrench with a pipe on it for the DS bolts as I couldn't get a ed socket in there.

yup ive done that before, gives you lots of leverage!!!!

@ thunderjet: YUP:D  actually vinnietbird informed me that at advance auto/autozone you can get torque converters. not too outlandish. but you can get replacements for a mustang. again not too weird. heres the trick--they carry one by "Pro King" :hick:  thats $80 :hick:  and he has one, its got a stall of about 2400, so all is well. his has held up well, so guess what im gonna go and buy!

i wanna nail the gas and flash stall it and break em loose like a madman

I worked for a time at a shop/salvage yard, installing replacement engines and trannies in cars, trucks and vehicles...
Do it like Vinnie suggested, lower the engine/trans as far as it'll go with jacks, then it makes getting those top bolts out gravy, with just a few extensions and an impact wrench.
But, make sure you have EVERYTHING else disconnected first, lol.
At the 'yard, it wasn't a big deal to snip off starter wires, cooler lines, etc etc..hell, in one case, I torched the whole  frame and used a 4 wheeler to drag it out.....
Eh, sorry for the hijack..
Yeah, and one more thing...if ya use a pipe on a wrench to bust loose those 12mm bolts..USE eye protection, I got a little scar on my chin from a fragment of shiznitty wrench when it broke, and nailed me.
A scar you can live with...one eye would be a little less fun yet, lol.

JeremyB, that tool looks like it's be great for using an air wrench on our driveshaft bolts..

how can i lower the engine/trans? will the rubber motor mounts allow it to tilt back, is that what youre saying? how about the engine fan, will that bang into the shroud and clip off the blades? just thinking about problems that could come up from tipping the engine over. if i could do that it sounds like its very helpful though!

Usually soft rubber motor mounts with some miles on 'em will allow the motor to tip backward.  If you're worried about it, pull the fan off the water pump while you're unbolting things.

I used an ATV jack with a piece of ply wood cut to fit on it to get the trans out.

Kinda hick but its better than trying to do it by hand.
