Title: question about the 5.0 SO
Post by: shame302 on January 10, 2005, 12:30:03 AM
is the 5.0 S.O worth keeping? i considered rebuilding it.
i know the fireing order is different than the HO but with a cam swap, new pistons, short block rebuild, E7 or GT40P heads and HO computer it should basically be a HO LB right?
im throwing an 88 HO for the time being while i get the rest of the car squared away. i figure it would be wiser to do that before building any HP. the engine runs like a kitten and the tranny works like new. i realy dont want the SO and AOD from the car go to waste.

sure with exeption of the pistons and heads and cam they are the same.  If you are building the SO then use a aftermarket cam for an HO so you can use an HO computer later.  I got two for $20 bucks each off ebay.

Also you might want to budget in a tranny build as well.  I thought my AOD was tight, it shifted firm and all behind the SO even with 165k miles on it.  It did see regular fluid change.  Any way when I put in the 300 horse 5.0 the first time I hammered on it I noticed it slipping pretty bad on the 1-2 shift and now that Ive hammered on it 5-6 times it is noticibly worse.  The bird is going on jackstands here shortly so I can pull it and have it gone through.  good luck, Jay

cool...so the crank, rods, and block are the same as a HO...id probably end up getting some new forged pistons, something of a better rod, reuse the crank and block, better heads and something mild like an e cam. i dont know about the AOD. its diffinetly worth a goin through. i dont know if id even use it. im going to a 5 speed right now so its extra parts. anyway...thanks for the reply, i appreciate it.
