Hey jcassity, I might be interested in this motor. I just blew my motor last week. The problem is I'm 600mi or about a 10hr drive from you. I'm trying to find a more local solution, but if I have to drive a ways I will. Basically what I'm trying to say is if you can hang onto it a little longer till I can see whats available up here I would certainly appreciate it. Will catch you later. Tim-88whitecat86
Thanks for the reply. Just by the name of it sounds like they are not going to have it at Advance so is this TFI module something that can be tested and possibly fixed or is it hit the j/y for a used replacement? Either way where is it located, and are they a common problem? Thanks alot for the guidance.
Hi all. I've been chasing down what I thought was a hot start problem. I could start the car in the morning cold, and it would run fine up to and at operating temperature. I could turn the car off for up to maybe 2 hours and have it start, much beyond that I would have to wait untill 4 hours had passed before it would run again. In that time frame if I tried to start it it would turn over and catch, run for 7-10 seconds then die for up to 6 seconds catch itself and repeat 2 or 3 more times before completely quiting. I started to address the problem by throwing parts at it figureing it needed a tune up anyway. I replaced plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil, air filter, fuel filter, and ignition switch. Unfortunatly after all that it still has a problem. It develops a complete lack of spark in those "dead" periods. I know the problem to be in the supply of the ignition coil, as i can remove the wire from the post and it won't spark to ground while I crank the engine. Now I dont know if this helps but out of curiosity I checked the voltage to ground on each of the terminals with the engine running and I got 14.3v on the red and 13.6 on the pair of green wires. With the engine off with this no spark condition present I got battery voltage on both terminals while cranking. Am I looking in the right direction here do you think? Im down to asssuming its engine management related and I know nothing about that. So thats the story. Any help would be appreciated.
1. Do you see the green area lit up where it should show the speed? Yes the backlighting works fine 2. Do you still see the regular start up screen which it produces when you turn the key? No. After starting it that one last time when this happened it shows nothing 3. Did your crusie control work before this problem? * Just double checking * Yes CC worked and I used it regularly. It is he symptom that made me think a common fuse somewhere blew 4. Does everything esle work on the dash besides the digital speedo? In regards to temp, oil, gas, alt light, yes they all work 5. Did you hit any sudden hard bumps before the problem started? Sorry no bumps, no parked cars, just no trauma. It was there, I did a 3pt turn and it was gone

Sorry since I went out and started tearing into it I hadnt seen this tilll I came back to report. But now for the update. I took it apart and the bulbs were fine. Dissconected it to check for corosion but it was clean. And most imporyantly reassemblly did not fix the problem. Any new ideas?
And to JC. Thats a great DIY that Ive gone though several times looking for things. Well done.
I ll keep that in the back of my mind untill next week if I cant resolve this Vinny. Ill know how much play money I have after I pay my $504 insurance bill this friday.
no didnt check that. but ill head out now. I figured that it was like a calculator display where only the backlight has a bulb. thanks vin!
funny eric!. I know NEW ones dont exist but there are usually a couple used ones kicking around in the 4sale section. maybe this is just an opportunity to get a 199mph modded speedo!
Before I start taking the dash apart and order a new speedo I figured I would see if anyone else has dealt with anything like this.
Last wednesday I got into my car after work. While turning the key and looking down but not specifically at the speedometer (base digital) I did notice that the display came on with its startup sequence showing 188 and all that. I did a 3pt turn to turn myself around and started on my way. I looked down to check my speed and saw nothing. There was no speed, odometer, or trip odometer in the display but the backlights were on as they were supposed to be. When I hit the highway I tried to set the cruise to the speed of traffic but that wasnt working either. I figured a fuse had blown so I checked my book and #17 seemed a likely culprit. unfortunatly the fuse was fine and thus starts the chase. The only other ideas I can come up with are an additional inline fuse behind the dash is bad or perhaps the vehicle speed sensor has gone bad. So heres where I say any and all suggestions appreciated!
Not always true! When I had my first heart attack I waited just shy of 7 hours to be seen and wound up hospitalized for a couple of days. The doc almost made me miss my road test for my license!
Found a j/y locally that says they have an oil pan for my 86 3.8 but they asked whether or not is has the oil level sensor and I had no clue. I assumed so since the dash has an oil level warning light and told them so but wanted to verify it here first before I go pick it up tomarrow. Was I right or wrong? Let me know and I apreciate the help!
Still looking for an aod but I have more pressing problems. Looking for an oil pan for an 86 v6. Put a nice 1qt/day leak into mine with a manhole cover.:hick: That or maybe someone has a motor, any motor that will just drop in l4 v6 v8 I dont really care so long as it runs and costs around $200. Then I can avoid doing my HG's.
Well its definitely the HG :p An external fail fail fortunately. It was making the hissing sound this morning but it now pumps a.f. out in a nice little stream from the right bank head. The worst is I think I caused this! The fan clutch is toast. Does not engage the fan at all. And here I was thinking it just ran hot because the system couldnt hold to pressure:hick: The oil is not milkshake yet and I see no indication of exhaust gasses in the a.f yet. I was foced to drive it home 40mi today with the thing g out and running hot. Tomarrow I'll pull the t-sat out and see if I can mount an electric fan to the radiator some how. Zip-ties or duct tape should work wonders! I have to be able to drive this thing till the weekend. My DD (Subaru Outback) is in the middle of an engine swap I started this past weekend because of a bad HG, and I dont think I'll have it ready any sooner than Friday. And I know HGs are not hard to replace but it gets pricey the moment you send your heads to the machine shop! So anyone have a decent 3.8 sitting in their garage from when they did a 5.0 swap? Willing to pick up within 150mi of Spfld Mass.
